I just confirmed with the Eureka DFG office that rockfish season opens from boats for both the north and north-central management areas on Saturday, May 15th, 2010. On that day we will have either a formal or an informal kayakfishing tournament at Shelter Cove. We call it "Gimme Shelter" and this will be the 4th annual. The first year it was half a dozen of us fishing for salmon in early March - it was a little rough, windy and no salmon were caught. We had a blast though. The second year was to be on the rockfish opener - it was cancelled due to weather and high seas and winds - it was like a hurricane. Last year, the third annual, we had great conditions and 45 kayaks on the water. We had some great prizes and it was a no-entry-fee tournee. Jedmo won it with a 56" Wolf Eel - took home a new GPS. Rock Hopper/Dustin took second with a 34" ling and bagged the cush new yak-seat. I took 3rd with a 32" ling and scored a nice new PFD. We had prizes for those who placed up to 10th, and I think those were all lings over 30". This year we'll hope for as good of conditions as last and maybe even more competitors.
One reason I'm starting up this thread is because Julie from The Tides Inn contacted me to let me know that we have 3 of her 8 rooms booked (Domenic, Danglin, and myself). Last year we filled the place with NCKA and were able to have our potluck and awards ceremony on the patio above the beach there at The Tides - it was great. http://www.sheltercovetidesinn.com/ So I encourage folks to consider booking a room at The Tides - I think Julie will be extending the Winter Special again this year, so it'll be 3 nights for the price of 2. We'll need to fill The Tides if we want to have the potluck there again. Also, for those who wish to camp I'm sure the Shelter Cove Campground and Deli will be stoked to have us back - last year they gave us firewood, extra spots to party in and no hassles.
This get together is a feel-good event with a focus on friendship and adventure in a more remote spot than most people get to fish. Shelter Cove has always been an awesome fishing destination and there's added allure because the last few years have seen shorter seasons and more restrictions, so there are more and bigger fish. We also hope to have a salmon season happening while we're there, and the bonus fish last year was a 39" Pacific Halibut caught by Domenic the day before the tournee in 55' of water - the biggest AOTY halibut recorded over the years, btw...
Don't get this wrong - it could be rough, windy, raining, earthquakes... Come prepared to salvage a good time from whatever Mother Nature offers and you will leave happy.
:smt001

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! I'm SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooo EXCITED!!!!! :smt044 You bet I'll be there ;)
-
Looking forward to it! (And judging by how early you posted up, I’m not the only one antsy to get up there haha!)
For all the Cove newbies, be forewarned: it’s wild up there. A day or two after GS3, this pod of orcas came in real close to shore to teach their pup how to kill. Wonder if they’d hit a Pencil Popper?

Edit: we actually had aspirations to catch salmon for GS2 (RF season wasn’t open yet). I remember because the DFG took emergency action to close the salmon season the following weekend…making GS2’s cancellation that much more bittersweet [it was our last chance for ocean salmon in (oh, what year is it now?) 3 years!]

Yes! I can't wait. Last year was a blast. Ab diving, fishing and a good group! Let the dreaming and trash talking begin :smt001

Awesome! I can't wait to head up there again. It was great fishing and is an awesome place to hang out. This year will be a lot better for myself since i was with my 2 month and 2 year old so I wasn't able to join much of the after partying but now they are all grown up 1 and 3 so it will great! Look forward to taking the title this year and hanging out with everyone.
-
Nice fish. Sign me up for this one. Andy

Right on. That's the spirit!
I'm hoping to make it, but with a brand new baby boy coming a few weeks earlier it may be tough.

I hear you there , I brought my newborn last year and found it a great place to hang out with the family. My wife just loved hanging out next to the ocean with our newborn. Congrats and hope to see you and your family up there.

Nice!!!
Can't wait., The whole family had a Good time last year....

Reserved a room for myself at the Tides! :smt003

I stayed there once and they gave me 10% off (no tax) because I told them I owned land there. Tell them Lyle & Marilyn (my good friends who own the Tea House by the light house) referred you there.
-
Cape Mendocino Tea is right next to the Cape Mendocino Lighthouse. Cape Mendocino is a ways north...
These photos are from today. I looked at a job in Shelter Cove and then hung out and enjoyed the sunshine. The waves were crazy-huge today.

Crazy big swells...

Booked at the Inn of the lost coast. See you there again Scott. :smt006 I liked this place last year and has a nice sushi plate in the restaruant. Plus it allows dogs so Brody can come along. Staying through till Tuesday, working on getting free night but not sure yet.
-
I will definitely try to make it up for at least part of this event. I can't wait to get up there and meet everyone, and catch my first rockfish from a kayak.
Michael
-
Weather willing, I want to try a little more spearfishing this year! It would be fun to hit a bunch of perch or black cod. I have a some new free dive fins and a new Omer gun that wants to taste blood..... :smt070
I just epoxy coated 30 4oz and 6oz flutter jigs. I want to stick some lings and cabs. Oh i can't wait!
Matt

Looking forward to your new work of art Matt. I have not had a chance to use the
wood shampoo that I had gotten from you since last rockfish season.

I've been looking forward to this since the drive home from GS III :smt003
I hope MattS traveling tackle shop is open for business :smt002

I will be there. I am going to dive the reef that's 4-500 yards straight out from the hotel if the vis is decent. It's packed with fish and 30' deep. I'll be bringing lots of lead to trade. Bring anything you have to sell or trade.

I appreciate the spirit of making sure everyone knows the history, Doug, and I agree.
Mario Machi founded Shelter Cove with his brothers before and after WWII. "Mario's Marina" was THE Shelter Cove business/fishing community throughout my young life and long before I was even around. My Dad made sure I knew what the occassional newspaper spotlight article would keep everyone abreast of as I grew up - Mario Machi was a proud and consistent force in Shelter Cove for decades, and his heroism at war was part of the mystique that always accompanied his presence. I spoke to the man a few times before his passing a dozen years ago. Mario had a reputation for not needing to say much at all to be respected as much as he was. RIP, Mario
Al, Tad and Stoggie - you guys are off the hook for not knowing, but please consider some minor penance on this issue by becoming people who will help to pass on the info about who Mario was and how Shelter Cove came about. Thanks, Guys. :smt001

Hey all,
just marked the calendar for the event and the excitement is growing Kim and I are jacked to be back on the water with you all. She even says she might fall in again. This time, I'll have the camera ready. HEE HEE HEE. MattS, are you going to be selling your ripping jigs again?
See you all there.
Shannon
-
SRJ, yes I will have the homemade tackle. I just finished putting jig hooks on 50 flutter jigs and have about a hundred powder coated jig heads. I will try to make up some more knockers and gaffs as well. It sounds production, but I just do a few at a time until they add up. It is just my hobbie (hmm or maybe my obsession) after all.
The flutter jigs I made some more mackerel, sardines and crab colors. I did well on those colors last year with lingcod coming on the fish patterns and cabies on the crab colors. I just finished some new stencil sheets, so hope this next batch will look even better. They have all come a long way from last year. The airbrush i got makes better detail work than the rattle cans I was using.
I will have some swimbaits, squid and scampies as well. I have really improved my plastics with some multicolor pours. I will post some pictures on the board soon.
Fun stuff and it keeps me out of trouble.....ok not really but I try :smt001
Looking forward to trying some of Andy's octopus plastics as well.

I didn't think that any offense was intended, and thanks to Eric for posting what I should have. I'm just going to gently put down the internet and slowly walk away for a little bit...
I'll be at the campground with the family, I look forward to seeing you guys there.
-
STOKED for you guys, BUMMED for me, won't be able to make it this year. Going to be in Cancun for a wedding. Hopefully will be able to get some fishing and diving in while I'm down in Mexico.
GIMME SHELTER is a fun filled weekend with great friends, fishing & food. For those who have not gone I encourage you all to go.
Eric thanks again for hosting what I call the best Norcal event ever! Wish I could be there.
Ariel Sea's Kayak Tow-in service will be out of service that weekend, be safe guys.
-
looks like fun. was planning to go but just learned that my brother is graduating from vet school on that day, so i'll be in illinois. have fun!
-
Damn! Sorry you won't make it, Ariel. I know Dom will be bummed too - have fun in Mexico. Maybe a hurricane down there will push you our way... :smt001 Ben - maybe next year.
-
Ariel, sorry you are not going to make it. I forgot to ask, how was that octopus you caught last year?
I am sure we will all be sure to send you lots of pictures and videos to make you jealous. Have fun in Mexico, I want to see some yellowtail pictures when you get back!
Matt
-
Bummed you won't be there Ariel. However, I will step up an assume the Octo wrestling duties should it be called for. Won't be the same without the monster slayer and his Pokey recipe.
Shannon

Woot!! Been waiting for this thread to start!
I will be there along with my brother-in law. Hopefully, my wife and newborn son will be along as well. Look forward to seeing the crew! :smt044

Eric

Eric,
I am working out of Arcata now.
Greg
-
Big Island! :smt009 Who would want to go to Hawaii when you can have cragy rocks, cold water, rain and fog. So how did you do Black Ab! Did you get your kayak trip in there? Did you catch any big Ula?
You can count me in the donate a few homemade trinkets. Maybe a gaff/knocker combo and some lures.
I may be bringing in the family this year. We got a travel trailer, so now the wife is willing to tag along. It was hard to talk her down into a towable trailer rather than the tasjma hall. She wants to try her new Hobie out.
I can't wait to dive the reefs Amphibian was talking about. I am up to 30-40 ft dives right now and working on improving some more. I may spend a few extra days after the tourney to get in some more diving and fishing, 3 days was too short!
Matt
-
ive heard enough! im there!
hopefully ill have some dive exp. under my belt by then and join u guys for a spearing.
-
I didn't get out OTW in Kona, Matt, but I did see a couple young guys pull in an 80# yellowfin Tuna off an inflatable right where I was staying at Punalu'u down near South Point. I also spoke to two guys with nice fishing yaks up at Ho'okena - that place was awesome - HUGE whale surfacing and giving fluke shots to the beach crowd - spinner dolphins cruising through the swimmers, yakkers and SUP'er out there. I'm glad to be back in Humboldt though - I'll take the murky, cold and craggy. :smt001

Here's a hot one: I'm thinking of wheeling and dealing to get a brand new Trident Angler as top prize for GS4...
I would need commitment from 30 participants at $20/head.
Please make an initial response in this thread...
:smt007
-
I'm good for it. Andy
-
Sounds like a good idea. I'd pony-up 20.
But does that mean we'd have to file paperwork w/DFG as a tourney? And would we then need to sign waivers to release liability? (skyverde flashback lol!)
-
Count me in! I hope I have enough room on my roof rack!
Matt
-
I'm in and thanks for hooking a brother up with my new ride :fishing1
-
Still longest fish? How do I target Wolf Eeels Jed? :smt044
-
PK - I believe I learned last year that no papers have to be filed. As for waivers... I'll find out about it but am not too worried about it.
Al - I'm considering a change of format. Maybe AOTD, but I don't want to encourage killing a certain number of fish... Suggestions welcome.
If it's a sticking point that I would be able to organize the tournee AND possibly win then I'll be fishing with Domenic and he might "win"... :smt002
Dom and I have been strategizing... :smt003
-
Yea I agree that we should maybe not have eels as the winner of this years tourney and should be part o fthe AOTD. I did enjoy the way the Albion Open was run but am open to anything. I say biggest Lingzilla!!!

Don - Does that mean the wife and twins are fishing this year?! :smt001
Glad to see some new faces up for the adventure, AS, Tf and hj.
I'm thinking I agree with Dr. Habanero - biggest ling instead of a multi-species deal. There's time to consider this... Man, if we have a salmon season going at the time it'll be interesting... For now we'll plan for rockfish and lings... There's always the wildcard hali too...
-
Al, it was all pure luck or perhaps it was the chumming that did the trick for the eel. :smt044 I honestly didn't think the eel was going to win anything till someone
had said something. I thought Dustin had won it because of his big lingcod.
Anyhow, I can't wait to see all of you again. Shelter Cove here we come!
BTW, I wonder if they still have my picture in the store.

I'll have to check into this although I doubt I get the clearance, especially considering it is the week of our anniversary.

i am planning on coming. are there any rooms left at the inn? my wife insists on not camping. if there are rooms, would someone post a link to the motel? please.
-
I'm in and so is my brother in law Jimmy.
-
I'm out. like some others, i'll be attending a commencement. I'd rather be down with the pomp and circumstance at GS4 instead of UPENN, but oh well.
Speaking of which...forget the jackpot fish contest! Who wants to lay side money down (say $3) on how many pages the official GS4 hookup thread will run this year? :smt044
-
Lingcod, rockfish, halibut, and salmon.
I got 3 bucks on 26pgs for the hookup, and will parlay my winnings into the report pool @ 28pgs.
-
Last check we'd booked 4 of the 8 rooms at The Tides Inn.
http://www.sheltercovetidesinn.com/
Please say so here if you are booking a room there - if we fill it up we can have our party there again. :smt001

I ended up booking at the Tides so Brody will not be coming this year. I'll make sure to he still has a great time with his buddy we have watch him and told him this is the only time we are leaving him home.
-
While I'm begging the boss for time off so I would be able to attend - does anybody know a # where I can call and get a camp spot in the area? I am hopping to be at this years event but it would have to be an economy trip.

Gonna talk this one over with the GF and see if she's willing to make the trip.
Dr. H, how old was your newborn last year?

Dang Molly was looking forward to chasing tail with Brody.

You've got bigger stones than me Dustin. And probably a significant other that doesn't resent kayak fishing as much as mine. :smt011

Just made a reservation at the Tides Inn myself. I was told I have the last room. Thank God
because the wife didn't feel like camping. Will be showing up with the whole family this time. See

I'm definitely not missing out this year. I went yak fishing there once as a wee lab about 10 years ago and recently returned out of season drooling with anticipation. Got to do some awesome river kayaking on the matole river while salmon were running though, kayaked right over them.
-
Right on, fishloomis and JWR - welcome to the far north Madness. :smt004
I exchanged some emails with Julie at The Tides today and we have it all full of yakkers! The PARTY IS ON!!!
She did request that we not park in the cul-de-sac there because the Oceanfront Inn across the way complained last year. So, for the potluck, we need to park on the north side of The Tides in the field off of Coral point. We'll make that clear to all participants on gameday.
Here's a flick I made last year showing The Tides Inn and surrounding beauty:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TL_TfWTRoJM
-
Damn, with the Tides Inn sold out I am not going to make it.
I think I was pushing it anyway, trying to make the trip two weeks after my baby is due!
I will definitely be at GS5. Have fun er'body. And to anybody who is thinking about making the trip...DO IT! The GF and I had a great time last year, the drive is beautiful, and the host/participants are top notch.
I'll be sadly following this thread along its epic journy to 50+ pages.

Too bad you won't make it, Dustin, but having a kid is a great excuse! :smt002

Yes, here is the link to all the inn & motels there. I'd reccomend the Beach Comber Inn or Mario's Marine Motel if you want to save some $ ( also very close to the campground).

I have a room booked at the Tides but now found out that my wife might have to teach a class that weekend and if that happens I 'm bringing the trailer and camping. So if anyone is interested in the room I will know soon and will cancel my reservation so someone else can get it.

Anyone wanting to share a site at the campground let me know.
I CAN'T WAIT

-
wow Darius you are alive. You have 3 months to buy and sell the same yak at least 5 times :smt044 Assuming mom can hold off on the delivery and she in an OK mood I am down for the event.
-
I have put the deal in motion to have the new blue Trident Angler 15 as the grand prize - seat included. There are other nice prizes in the works too.
We have 29 of us so far who have confirmed a desire to register and attend the event. I've been considering what happens in the event of bad weather/WX. Since many of us are booking rooms and will attend no matter what, and showing up only in the event of good weather is an option that some will choose, I may setup pre-registration in order to sweeten it for those who commit earlier than, say, May 1st. I'm going to have at least 4 dozen shirts printed up. Pre-registration will likely be $25 including a shirt and the tournee fee. If I get 40 pre-registrations the shirts and the boat will be paid for. I may charge $40 for late registration all the way up to tournee day. If the money collected exceeds the receipts for boat, shirts, potluck supplies and other tournee stuff I'll put it back in a pot to be raffled or given out as prize money.
This is what I have in mind at this time. Input is welcome.

Sounds great BlackAb! I will be there rain or shine, that is why I got my new rain jacket! We (the family) are taking the new (to us) camp trailer over so will be weather ready. I am hoping to spend a few more days after the tournament to do some more fishing, diving and exploring.
I got some wood to start turning out some knockers. I will donate a knocker and some lures for prizes again.
Let me know where to send the check!
I have a trout derby with my co workers on the 12,13th then will jet over to Shelter Cove on the evening on the 13th. I hope to dive Friday and win the tourney on Saturday :smt003 WoHoooo!
Stoggie, Al and Tad, the first Whiskey Flip is on me!

Regarding the tournee, I propose something like this:
- AOTD format (greenling 11 points/inch, lingcod 5 points/inch, rockfish and cabezon 7 points/inch)
- participants to fish in teams of at least two but score individually
- each team to have VHF, camera and measuring device
- bonus points of 1 inch for C&R
- fish to be entered either dead or in pixels
- tournament director cannot win grand prize
I'm still deciding on this and, as always, I welcome input.
-
man, I want to go, but I don't know if I can.
Dave

how bout a raffle for any fish over 16 inches?
-
nevermind 16...try like 23 inches or som
-
Hey brother,
Have been incognito and out of touch on the site, so here I am. AOTY type format sounds ripping. Better sign me up too.

The format sounds good, but I don't think the director needs to be left out. Home turf or not, everyone has a fair chance. I am not sure the teams are necessary (maybe just a recommendation?), as we all just followed Abking and Ariel around anyways. It did seem everyone grouped up for support and camaraderie, it did make it fun.
I am glad I kept my Abking Hog Trough measure extention, I will need it!

Thanks, Brother Matt, but I've played out the scenario in my mind - Abking wins the tournee and the new yak and it looks real bad! I'll settle for one of them cush seats with the 2" pad like Dustin nabbed right before me last year! :smt005
As for the teams, I'm concerned with these issues:
- safety (VHF, more safety equipment available per yakker, assistance from someone very nearby...)
- documentation and assistance for those who wish to C&R
- and, maybe it's vague, but I think that requiring people to at least pair up is more in the spirit of NCKA.
-
i like the way your format is shaping up !!
-
I kinda dig the teams. We have lots of ppl with very little salt exp. Might be cool to help them out. And heck a newb on a team almost guarantees victory. Pulling names (for teams) out a hat may be kinda cool. It could build new friendships.
-
Pulling names (for teams) out a hat may be kinda cool. It could build new friendships.
Just to add a thought to that, maybe two hats. One "more" experienced, one "less" -- however you would measure that -- and pull one name out of each hat for each team. Just a thought.

Only 87 days days away !!!
thx for organizing this!
Right on! I'm not at all familiar with setting up a paypal acct., so I'll ask for checks/money orders.
I've never done anything like this other than organizing soccer teams and such... I haven't decided on the final format, but I am very close to ordering t-shirts and I have the kayak deal set. I also know of some prizes coming from Pro Sports Center/Outdoor Store (thanks, spedrcr!!). So...
If you want to send a check now before I've even figured out how to create a registration form then send $25 payable to Eric Stockwell to PO Box 432 Loleta, California 95551. I'll keep the list updated on the current page of this thread and I'll highlight those who've paid. Early registration for at least the first 40 includes full participation in the tournee plus a t-shirt and probably some other various schwag. Grand prize of the new blue Trident 15 Angler goes to winner of AOTD (rockfish/cab/ling/greenling/halibut...), bonus of 1 inch per species for released fish, photos of released fish must show entire fish against verifiably measurable surface, anglers to fish in teams of at least two and each team must have a VHF, camera, measuring device and prior ocean experience, fishing from dawn to the "weigh-in" at The Tides Inn, time TBA on May 15, 2010.
Let the Madness begin... :smt004

throw me on that list. can't wait for may to get here

Anyone still interested in the Tides Inn there will be my opening now. I have had to cancel my reservation since my wife is teaching this weekend. I will be bringing the tent trailer instead. See you all there.

Is there anyone might be interested in sharing their site? I will be arriving Friday Afternoon, leaving Sunday noonish, Thanks...

Eric, is there going to be a release form of sorts?
It's not in the works at this time, Al. If I feel the need for something like that I'll have people sign it when they accept their shirt.

Hey Eric, my attorney (my dad) is putting together a waiver/release of liability form for albion. you are welcome to use it for gs4.

I'm in...Check is in the mail...I recommend T15 and other prizes to go in a raffle if tourney is called off due to weather, you must be present at Saturday's rain or shine Potluck to claim your raffle prize.
Also, my vote would be to remove the C&R bonus because is gives skilled fisherman an advantage. I suck at fishing and don't bring a camera on the water......so Wood Shampoo or CPR it doesn't matter, biggest RCG or Halibut wins by length.....that way it only takes one and it could be anyones' day.
Side note, when you get my entry, you can skip the t-shirt unless you have the XXXL.
-
Raffle sounds good.
I should have no problem getting you a XXXL.
-
get me one too@ xxxl

I'm out. like some others, i'll be attending a commencement. I'd rather be down with the pomp and circumstance at GS4 instead of UPENN, but oh well.
Speaking of which...forget the jackpot fish contest! Who wants to lay side money down (say $3) on how many pages the official GS4 hookup thread will run this year? :smt044

I think for the other prizes we'll do like last year and people can pick from the lot. So far other prizes include MattS tackle, a paddle, a seat, a safety kit, some yak locking systems...

I haven't spoken to the campground owner this year, but I did leave him a GS3 t-shirt last year after what I think was a hassle-free campout where club members probably paid near full rate on 15 sites or more. His new deli is looking good and has great hot food (the fish&chips is really good) - last year he set us up with a couple of free sites with extra tables for partying and some firewood I think. I'll get ahold of him at some point and see if he'll offer the same perks this year.
Last year we had at least 45 kayaks OTW for the tournee. I'm shooting for 60 or more this year. :smt001
-
Check sent out today, Shirt = XXL
Looking forward to getting back on the big blue and hanging with NCKA

Safety requirements for GS4 tournament participation:
- fish in teams of at least two
- PFD use per CG regs
- dress for submersion - farmer john wetsuit w/ paddling jacket/dry top, full drysuit or full wetsuit
- each team must have an operable VHF submersible radio
- each team must have prior ocean experience
- each team must have a camera and measuring device
- each team must have a compass and should have a GPS
I carry each of the items listed plus flares, a pump, flotation for my yak, a couple whistles, my cell phone, duct tape, water, a drift sock, an extra paddle, and other misc. gear.
It is suggested that you take a paddling safety class. There are 3 such classes at MBK prior to GS4.
It's possible that a VHF or two may be available on loan at the tournee, but it's best to get one or get together and fish with someone who has one.
-
I will bring a couple xtra vhf radios for loaners. I can also bring an xtra kayak if anyone needs one. Hey Eric, are we allowed to assist others in our group with netting, measuring or photographing their fish?

I have been on the Big Blue quite a bit,
but figure I would get the clarification for some with less time OTW.
1. What qualifies as "prior ocean experience"?
2. Also would having 2 GPS units surfice or do you still want a Compass on board?
Can't wait - this will be a lot of fun and probably the only amount of quality time I will get till Sept.
-
1. What qualifies as "prior ocean experience"?
If someone on your team has been on the ocean in a kayak then you're good to go.
2. Also would having 2 GPS units surfice or do you still want a Compass on board?
I'd rather that there was a compass, but 2 GPS's will do.
-
Hi Yakhopper,
I have a compass if you want to team up with me. I also know this place quite well :smt002
Sonny

Sonny,
I would be honored to team up with you.
Also have an extra Compass, GPS, VHF, and any other gear needed.

Hey did I missed something? What is this team I'm hearing about? How many
people can be in one team? Can I be in your team too Sonny?

"Safety requirements for GS4 tournament participation:"
- fish in teams of at least two
Of course Jed. The more the merrier :smt001
-
The team concept is a safety measure - we will score individually.
In teams we will be better able to immediately assist one another, more safety gear will be available to all parties, and, since a VHF is required of all teams, the entire host of tournee participants will remain informed of all occurences being discussed on the radio.
If Al hadn't gotten that radio call off when he did last year this might have been a memorial tournament... :smt009
-
Hi Yakers:
I'm going to CarPool and, team up with Matt unless I'm NOT Worthy!
No GPS but maybe, I'll Win one! : :smt002
We're going to share site #93.

Already forming alliances huh? :smt008
Eric,
if salmon season is open during May 15, can we add salmon to the list of officially-sanctioned fish? :smt007

It's all about the alliances... :beer3

Hey Sonny & Jedmo,
Looks like we have to come up with a cool name for our team :smt044
How bout team screw loose :smt005

I just reserved/confirmed Campsite #95. If anyone wants to share a campsite, let me know.

I've got a screw loose also. May I play on the Yakhopper/Jedmo & Sailfish team too? dave...

I've been bugged a lot about not camping with my bro's for this trip... :smt010 So wondering if anyone wants to take my room at the Tides Inn so Sara and I can :chug :camp :smt062 with the guys. Otherwise, i'll keep it and still :beer2 :party at the site ;)

So wondering if anyone wants to take my room at the Tides Inn
Hey Al, can I tentatively put my name in the ring for this. I want to talk to the wife and see if we can come up and just hang with the crew. I wouldn't be bringing any gear, just a little roady with the fam. I'll let you know by tomorrow.
-
I like Team Home Brew :beer3 and I think I will try and bring some home brew to the party. Cheers mate

Bennettdanville makes an awesome homebrew. I used to trade him fish for beer. :smt007
-
Team Home Brew works for me! Unfortunately my volunteer commitments with the Grand Jury have eliminated my brewing time. However, I do have a room at the Tides with a refrigerator. I'll plan on bringing a few good micro brews for the team.

:smt005 :smt005 :smt044 :smt044 I love it. Name is really catchy and perhaps a

Hey Sonny & Jedmo,
Looks like we have to come up with a cool name for our team :smt044
How bout team screw loose :smt005
Depend on how many people going to be on this team. For now we got 4 (Dave, Eric, Jed, & Sonny) so it's "The 4 Screw Loose Team" :smt003

Dave,
Speaking for the team; Team Home Brew would be proud to fish with you too.

Don't you dare "recruiting" my team member Martin :smt044
-
Blue native and I talked yesterday about hauling up a batch of homebrew. Oddly enough, while sitting at Bear Republic brewing to finish of a day at lake sonoma that topic came up. :smt003 Was thinking I could just haul up a 5 gal keg in a can of ice..
-
Bill,
Bringing home brew could certainly get you "drafted" onto the team.
Martin

Sonny,
Your team is looking like Team Vallejo.

Sonny,
Your team is looking like Team Vallejo.
Can't narrow our recruiting to just local resources. We're going "global" like Yakhopper is from "Fresno Island" :smt003

Ah shucks guys yu got me feeling all warm an fuzzy. Thanks dave...

OK Dave,
Need an answer - Are you a Screw Loose or a Home Brew? :smt044

This is going to be an intresting 2 months :smt005
:smt003
PK - if salmon season is open we will of course add salmon to the list of tournee species (let's keep praying for that!)
This homebrew team is sounding more like a squadron - can't wait to see team Brew on the water! :smt001
-
OK Dave,

Let me make it easier for him to make the right choice!
Dear Dave,
- Do you have any screws?
- Does any of them loose?
If you answer "yes" to both questions above then you're a "natural screw loose" and should join our team :smt003
-
I'm betting the Home Brew team will envy our accomplishments, Loose Screws Rocks! dave...

:smt007 I like! :smt007 That kayak is sooooo pretty.
Watch out for Homebrew, it often has quite a head on it.... :smt044
Banjotad and I are teaming up. Catchy and original team name coming soon!

Gonna have to think of a good name for the humboldt crew. Maybe well be "Humboldt blue". :smt044 :smt044

How about "Dream Team"... With a target itinerary like this:
- salmon
- rockfish
- cabezon
- greenling
- lingcod
- halibut
- perch
By the time I have all those other species pixelated and ready for the virtual weigh-in I should be able to enjoy a couple liquid sandwiches while anchored up in the Cove waiting for my perch.

Never heard back if I was in the running for this but I'm gonna have to back out. I'm guessing that you have the room for Friday and Saturday night and I wouldn't be able to make it up there until Saturday and I can't afford to be throwing away money.
If you don't get any takers, let me know and maybe we can work something out.
-
im sending my payment today.it will be my 1st time on the big blue in a yak(weather permitting).if someone has a campsite to share and a team to be on please let me know.i am a rookie(newbie)but i will be attending Aarons safety course at mbk on april 10th.i am a surf fisherman 1st,but kayak fishing looks awesome.i try to be safe 1st always, but its time to "go for it ".i will have vhf and all safety gear .my 1st outing was at mew melones, met lots of great people and had fun.always looking forward to new fishing&yak skills.

Just got a reservation for a tent site. Gonna share a space with BanjoTad, may god have mercy on my soul.
Didn't get a number, as she wasn't really awake this morning, but will get a call when they have a site number for me.
I asked for a site near the upper back where we were last year, somewhere in the 90's I believe.
Anyway, hope we can still sign up for the tourney at the campground.
See ya all there.
Stoggie
-
hope we can still sign up for the tourney at the campground.
I may loosen up the late fee, but my aim is to not have to deal with new registrations at Shelter Cove.

- Grand Prize of new blue Trident 15 Angler w/ seat
- other prizes will be offered (custom tackle, potential seat/gps/paddle/pfd/...)
- free t-shirt for first 40 early registrants (before April 15th)
- $25 registration includes shirt and tournee entry
- in the event of a hurricane we'll decide the fate of the prizes by committee of all members present
- late entry (after May 1st) = $40 and no shirt
- all entry fees over and above receipts for kayak, shirts, potluck supplies/other to be given as prize money or decided on by committee of all members present

Eric - check just written out in Thursday's mail. Thanks for taking care of this for us all.
My kids are coming along just to hang out. Any chance I can buy a couple of T-shirts for them?

thats it I'm a loose screw to.

I guess this makes you a tiny loose screw :smt101 :smt119 :laughing6:
Welcome aboard.
Hey Sonny,
I should be riding with Fishdt as well as sharing a campsite - Maybe he should also be a loose screw also?
(That's an invite for you Fishdit incase you didn't catch it) :smt003

Bill,
Bringing home brew could certainly get you "drafted" onto the team.
Martin
:smt004 Im starting a batch of hoppy IPA tomorrow using homegrown cascade hops.. should be fun to see how that comes out.. Been talking to greg (blue native) about what we want to brew up to bring along.. gotta get started on that soon! Wondering what beer would go good with fishing.. oh yeah.. any beer.. :beer3
-
I think we're going a little overboard w/the team thing. Because a team of 5+ people defeats the purpose---which is to increase safety OTW. Do you really want to keep track of 4 or 5 other people? Or just 1 or 2 other people? That's how the "buddy system" works.
Uncle Abby, don't think I forgot that 6er I owe you from our 2008 cabezon sidebet! Debt to be paid in full @ GS4 buddy!

JWR - You're welcome to join Team Shark Bait. There are too many loose screws out there.
-
That's great - how old are they? We can definitely set them up with some T's - I'll have a post and likely a mass PM dedicated to that later when I'm getting ready to have them printed.
definitely want in on that, 2 shirts, going on 13..... Oh my.... Trouble....
-
Sorry guys,
Just having fun (must be my loose screw)
The team with names was just for fun (like trash talking)
OTW I figured we would split into doubles anyway.
-
Looking for a teammate. I have GPS, compass, whistle, and better homemade hooch. I'll probably get a vhf by then too (anyone selling?). If the only technical requirement for experience is that I have paddled a kayak in the ocean, I've got that covered too.
Also interested in getting kid's t-shirts.
-
Crash, you can team up with me if you like... though we should probably avoid politics OTW :smt003
I've got all the gear and I have a radio you can use if you haven't picked one up by then. I've been on the ocean maybe a dozen times, I'm not sure if that counts as "experience" ... I wouldn't refer to myself that way.

A hoppy IPA can't be beat. Just thinking about it makes me thirsty.

Correct Pat. For safety purposes and teaching, 2-4 people with 50% or more the team having salt water experience is ideal. More than 4 people can be doable but on foggy or swelly days, it can be hard to keep an eye on everybody. We commonly fish in groups of 4-8 at Big Sur, but everyone is experienced. We will unfortunately have to limit "Team Home Brew" to 3 people. Luckily we have alot of experienced guys on the outing so all of the newbies should be able to pair up with a vet.

Thanks Ben. We'd actually do just fine having a civil political discussion I'm sure.
Also, in the highly unlikely event of a crystal clear night on the California coast, there is a spot off of Chemise Mountain where you can see the lights of the San Francisco Bay area. There may be night trekking involved.
-
We'd actually do just fine having a civil political discussion I'm sure.
Oh, no doubt, I was just having a little fun. Seeing the bay area from that part of the world sounds remarkable. Talking my wife into a night-time trek up the mountain might be more of a challenge however :smt002
and better homemade hooch
What is it that you brew/distill/ferment?
-
I just confirmed space #96 at the campground. Not sure who my neighbors are, but will be a great time for sure.
She said the campground is filling up fast for the rockfish opener.
BanjoTad will be sharing the space, there might be room for another small tent (if I remember right) so if someone gets there and needs a space, I am sure there will be lots of room this year.
Man I can't wait

Ready I have a plum wine, a hard cider, a Cab Franc/Merlot meritage style blend from Amador County grapes, and am probably going to brew a sweet cherry wheat beer for the occasion.

64 more days!
-
Anybody know how big the camp sites are up there? We are in #90 and my buddy is thinking about hauling up a tent trailer.
-
Sorry guys,
Just having fun (must be my loose screw)

Finally a team name I can Align with :smt003
-
I was in Shelter Cove today and will have some very fresh campground photos up soon. :smt004
As for team 'cristicism',... :smt011, I am considering whipping up a special video just to address it. I fished team newbie for the first half of last year's tournee and it was great. There were 10 of us or so and it was real handy to have everyone around when SRJ's lady went in the drink at the first reef stop. Cool thing was she caught the first couple of fish among the group! :smt003
Anyway, the more the merrier is actually a good policy out there. We can stress the need to have an actual partner, as in two people who watch out for each other, but the team thing is an important part of my structure. Thanks for the advice. :smt002
My kids are coming along just to hang out. Any chance I can buy a couple of T-shirts for them?

They put the picnic tables and fire rings in the road during the off-season at the campground.
-
I've got 13 yr old twins, boy and girl. Adult smalls should work fine.
They're becoming fishaholics like their old man. I was looking through photos of them recently, most of them involve holding fish all the way back to 3 yrs old.
-
Right on, JWR! :smt001

Great pix JWR! I wish my daughter was still into fishing.. She used to love it but now is in her first year of highschool and other things seem to have replaced fishing for her. :smt012 lol. She still loves to yak tho, so maybe she will rediscover fishing. I miss those "holding fish" looks!

I thought of you when I was looking through some last year photos. I'd say there's room for a tent trailer.

We've hit 40 paid participants for the tournee, and I won't be finalizing the shirt order for a few more weeks, so the free shirt with the $25 registration stands until further notice. :smt001
Here's another teaser that I meant to put up last night...

Hello Nor Cal Kayak Anglers!
I just registered to be apart of this site and look forward to getting some much needed info. I just purchased a Trident 13, and took it out for the first time Sunday. I'm new to Kayak Fishing and would love to be apart of the Ling Cod fishing trip. Any information would be helpful. Is there still room for a rookie fisherman? Also, how do I register? thanks,
Scott

Scott - Welcome, but we already have 2 Scotts on the board. Here are the 3 steps...
1. Send a check or money order for $25 to Eric Stockwell PO Box 432 Loleta, California 95551
2. Attend a safety or paddling class like the one at MBK
3. Purchase the recommended safety gear
Scott
-
Check is in the mail tonight...God knows if the wife will allow it (or come) but what the hell.
-
Thanks for the information. I will contact MBK to see if I can attend the safety class before the trip. The trip looks really fun and I look forward to meeting some new people. Thanks again,
Scott
p.s. I have a wetsuit, compass, and whistle. What else will I need?
-
Safety requirements for GS4 tournament participation:
Scott - here is the info. Basically bring a keg of beer, come up with a cool team name, and people with a tons of equipment will join your team. :smt005 Scott
-
p.s. I have a wetsuit, compass, and whistle. What else will I need?
Scott
Scott I was a newbie there last year,
and beside fishing and camping gear,
I would suggest,
a VHF radio
a camera to photo all those lings, cabs, verms, etc.
You will meet a great bunch of yak fishin brothers there :smt003
Welcome to the madness :smt003

We already have :smt003 So far we got teams "Loose Screws", "Home Brews", and "Shark Baits" :smt044
-
Not sure,
but I believe the teams will fish the same areas but seperate into groups of 2 (1 OG and 1 Newb)
Either way it will be a great time and all Newb's will have an OG to hang with.
BTW - Officially LESS than 2 months to go :wav:

Want to "race" with my Cobra Strike Surf yak? :smt044
-
Eric I got a yak board last summer...Super fun and a great diversion when the fishing is slow and waves are good.
-
I will give it a try - But I think I may have passed my surfing days :smt004
-
I'd say yak exp is more important then surfing exp. Just playing in 2 ft waves is fun. It's crazy how easy that tiny boat is to turn.....
-
In my earlier days I was a fair surfer (must be my Hawaiian Blood) and was always on a skateboard.
Now it's strictly the long board for me (both surf and skate).
-
We'll now that we have over 40 people paid and ready to go maybe we should make sure the new people all have groups with experienced kayakers. Should we start a list with the teams?
I'm not on any team yet... I"m assuming that on Friday night, as we're talking (fish stories no doubt) and drinking beer by the fire, I'll somehow get on a team. If not, I'll just tag along a team that looks the most experienced :smt044

Thanks for the info everyone, I really appreciate it. Could someone give me the info for the camp site? I have a tent trailer and would be bringing it (along with all the beer my care can hold). I have all the necessary fishing gear and would hoping to pair-up with a more experienced ocean kayaker once there. Thanks,
Scott1978

Tell them you're with the kayak group for the rockfish/lingcod opener.
It's good advice to read this entire thread - it's a little bit of a pain, but there's a ton of good info, photos and some history in these pages.
You may even want to read all through last year's post! :smt005 (search the "hookups" page for the biggest thread of all time... :smt004

Thanks for the information. I will contact MBK to see if I can attend the safety class before the trip. The trip looks really fun and I look forward to meeting some new people. Thanks again,
Scott
p.s. I have a wetsuit, compass, and whistle. What else will I need?
Scott - do a hull integrity test on your new T13 before your safety class if possible. Check for leaks right side up and upside down. Some of the deck loops on my T15 weren't sealed. You don't want to find out you have a leak out on big blue. Last year there was an incident with a T13 I believe. Scott

I'll have to get back to you on that - or maybe cajun will help us out with that - he has the boat and has graciously agreed to haul it to Shelter Cove for the tournee. I just had to twist his arm with a cold Sierra Nevada at closing time last night... :smt001

Scott-
Thanks for the heads-up on my yak. I took it out this past sunday and it was dry as a bone after 4hours of paddling. I didn't flip it over to check the top though, so I really appreciate that info. I plan to take my safety class (at lake Natoma) on 4/25/10 so I should be ready for the trip! Also, thanks for the info on the camp grounds.

I wish I could make it to MBK, but I live is Sac and my schedule is packed on the weekends. I hope this class will be informative, but I'll let everyone know.
-
Friday afternoon the 14th of May at the Cove we can do a little safety seminar at the boat launch...
-
That would be great. Let me see if I can come on the 14th. The class at Lake Natoma is a beginning sea kayaking class. Should I still take it? or would I be better off just comming and taking a lesson or two with you guys. Thanks for the offer. It's much appreciated. :smt001
-
Just curious,
I still see a lot of names that are in the not paid column :smt010.
This is the premier event of the year and I for one would sure hate to miss it.
If you haven't yet sent a check to Eric, you should make it a point to get-er done :smt006. These events take a lot of work to get organized and I for one would like to see the largest turnout of the year (I need to put more faces to screen names). On the other hand if you are just afraid to fish against me than I can understand that :smt005 and it would probably be best to just show up as spectators :smt044 :smt044 :smt044

Thanks for the support, Eric! Get those registrations in!!! :smt001

You should definitely take the class. What we do at the Cove will just be verifying that you're ready, not starting you from scratch. You'll be expected to have gear to dress for submersion and I will want you to paddle out from the launch, fall off your boat, get back on, and show that you understand issues such as breakers, reef, sets, sudden wind, dehydration, sun exposure...etc. The issues of knowing the reef and where sets can come in when the water had been calm before are very important. No one should be getting in the water without that info.
I know which spot you're talking about. Can I film you? :smt003
You don't know jack, Dude! (JK!!) :smt002
Truth be told, I'd like to paddle up here for a dive...

It's 3 miles north of Ab Pt. The vis will likely suck, but someone's gonna pull an oldgrowth. :smt007

Safety first! I'll take the class and plan on meeting up with some of you more experienced guys on may 14th. I plan on reserving my camp spot and mailing my $25 in the next couple of days. Thanks

so hows the ab diving in the area we are camping at?
-
so hows the ab diving in the area we are camping at?
You can walk down the stairs by the light house right across the camp ground and get your Abs there! How about that for convenience? :smt003
-
And if you don't believe me, ask Andy/FishMaster1...
-
Ab diving for easy 7 to 8 inchers is very close, and the minus tides in the mornings will create a situation where, literally, anyone who buys an ab card should be able to get abs with just a wetsuit. If you buy an ab card, have an iron and guage, and get in the water down from the lighthouse at a minus 1.5' tide you will find lots of abs. The problem is that most of them are just under the legal 7" size. Patience and a little bit of adventurous spirit in the cold water and you will have easy abs. :smt001
-
hell yes!

If Salmon season is still a go during this shindig, I can probably bring a box or two of lead balls for those who want to troll but don't have a D.R. (keep your fingers crossed). I will also have at least one extra Kayak avail. if someone needs a loaner.
Oh Yah!!!
56 more days - not a count down - just excited :smt003

I would like to do some Ab Diving while up there (went once many years ago up by Point Arena and loved it), but have no dive gear at all and doubt I can come up with the cash to get all I need before May... :smt009
Is there a dive shop in Shelter Cove that rents the necessities??
I see online there is one in Fort Bragg that has the works, but looking at the map it seems like that would be quite a bit out of the way if we were coming straight up on the 101...
Any suggestions you guys have would be greatly appreciated!!
Also, my wife has agreed to come up and bring our daughter with us so I will be in the market for a few extra t-shirts if there will be any available for sale!!
Looking forward to seeing you all up there!!
:smt006
Sincerely,
Jim

Hi Jim,
There's no diveshop in Benicia! I suggest you rent one from a diveshop in your area. They usually let you rent it for a weekend package.
Sonny
-
I'd like to loan you some gear, Jim, but you might be too big! I'm 6' and 205# - will you fit in my extra gear?
You could at least just rent the suit and booties and we could hook you up with all the little pieces like weight belt, hood, fins, ab tools...etc.
-
Thanks guys!!
Yeah, I'm 6' 4" 240ish...don't think I could squeeze in your gear!!! :smt003
Yeah, I can probably rent a thicker suit somewhere here in town (if I can't convince the wife to let me buy it first!!) and then hopefully I can borrow enough of the other goodies to get out and get wet!!
If not, no worries at all...just really looking forward to checking the place out, meeting you guys and hopefully catching a few fish!!!
:smt004
Sincerely,
Jim
-
Hey Yakhopper or others,
If that spare Kayak is still up for grabs? Would you be willing to allow my girlfriend to use it? We'll be up on Friday and stay til Monday. Is it a sit on top? Appreciate the consideration. Otherwise, we'll rent her one. Thanks in advance,
SRJ- Shannon

I got my reservation card in the mail! WooHoo! I can't wait. To celebrate I went into the shop and poured a bunch of swimbaits and lifted a glass to GMS 4. My wife and daughter are pretty excited. My daughter is waiting for me to catch her some more Abalone. I am not sure if she likes the meat or the shells more. We will see how the new (to us) trailer pulls over the hill. That is the closest my wife gets to "camping".
I just got a new stringer and drift sock from Hook 1. Of course if it is windy there, the swells may just eat you :smt009 I put my Abking/BlackAb special Hawg Trough extention on, I know I am going to need it this year!
Any one hearing any rumors about a salmon season? I hear it may be a go, but might be the short season they gave us last year. Not looking too good for the rivers though. That would be really sweet to troll for some salmon, jig some lings, and drive home with a new kayak!
I can wait to play around with my camera dive housing some more. I can film some dive action to make everyone who isn't going extremely jealous and wrought with envy. I hope there is some good visibility. It was really increadable last year. Did any of your dive video's and pictures turn out of our ab dive BlackAb?
I have to get busy and finish up the fish knockers and gaffs. I got the wood, I just have to clean up the lathe! The nice weather has me inspired to get some work done.
Any case, I am ready! Can't wait to see all my buds again.
Matt
-
Hey Matt :smt006 Will you be coming prepared with cash register and all? :smt005 I'm sure I'll be buying some of your lures and what not once again.
See you then if not sooner.
Jedmo
-
YAY! I'm on the paid list! Wouldn't miss this for the world (or jury duty on 5/17...)!
Shannon, I might have a spare yak to loan. I have a P15 that lives up there, so if I haul my T140 or T13 up there, you can definitely borrow my P15. I'm just debating if I want to make the 7-hr drive w/a yak on the roof. I'll try to have an answer for you soon.
50 more days until..... :smt068
-
We have at least two members coming to this event who rent boats through their businesses.
Cajun can hook you up through Pro Sport Center/Outdoor Store in Eureka/Arcata.
Swellrider can hook you up through Humboats out of Eureka.
Humboats: (707) 443-5157 - you will deal directly with Hawk (Swellrider) or his wife.
Outdoor Store: (707) 822-0321 - you will need to get in touch with Greg (cajun).

Matt, I plan on tying up a bunch of flashabou (sp?) hooks. If you got some jigs I got the hooks. I got a crapload of supplies. Time to crack a beer and sit at the vice.
-
Hi EWB, I got jigs! In fact I tied up some tensile jigs for myself the other day. The collars on the Spires head work great for tying onto and flaring the flash. I am feeling a little nervous talking about this secret weapon on the public forum. Maybe we should take this to a private discussion to ensure our success at GMS4 :smt003 Amphibian said the lings were chasing the tensile jigs like crazy last year.
I loved your paint jobs on the jigs as well! I have painted, powder coated and non painted, which ever you want.
Wait till you see my new swimbaits. I want to eat them they look so good!
Matt

Any room left? I have fished the ocean before at places like stillwater south, fort ross, halfmoon bay and pacifica but still consider myself a newbie. I am looking into the mbk class also.

The wife just fully blessed the trip. So the family will be in tow. God knows I am cashing in the WAF for this one. The wife will be 8 mo preggers and we'll have a 2yr old. Now time to finish up the pop up. Jed is the family coming? Maddy had a blast with Danielle.

Looks like I have more extra stuff than previously believed :smt004
If you don't mind would you please bring LOTS of extra money for the gear sale/swap and if anyone has a farmer john to fit a 6'2" 240lb male I'm sure I have something you will want to trade.

I'm sure I can trade you with some sort of tackle.

I'm in. baitNbeer, you want to carpool, I am living in Lodi now, and have mucho room bro.

EWB, you will be putting the work in on this one! :smt003 I can see it now, EWB do you copy? Paddle fast, we have a drive ahead of us :smt005
I'll have my EMT kit and have delivered a few baby's. At least you are going, that is one understanding wife!
Matt
-
Nice...yeah I am gonna make sure she has a radio with her when I fish (no cell service) but I figure with all the NCKA'ers that a firefighters, EMT's etc. we should be in good hands. Man could you imagine the post if a baby is born at an event!!!! That baby would have 100 aunts and uncles on day one!

Yes, as a Team SharkBait member I have been engaged in a rigorous training regimen to prepare for the event!! It involves spending as much time out of the house as possible on the kayak with a fishing pole in my hand!!! :smt044
Just hope I have more luck with the catching aspect at GS4 than I have been having around Capitola recently!! :smt012
All joking aside...we did do a team inventory of safety equipment/skills/experience to make sure that between us we had enough goodies and know-how to be safe and have fun...really looking forward to fishing with my Team and with all you guys!!

TWO WEEKS NOTICE:
On April 15th I will stop offering a free shirt with registration.
Get your registrations in soon.
:smt001
-
I have an extra VHF and flares, whistle if anyone needs to borrow. PM me. Scott
-
I was rapping with Hawk this afternoon - he's down with helping me with a safety seminar Friday evening at the boat ramp. He's got all the certifications and is offering his waiver too. Thank you Hawk! :smt001
-
Out of the 48 currently paid for the tournee, 20 were there last year and 28 are first-timer's to GS4.
-
I'm in, another GS first-timer here!. Will drop the check in the mail tomorrow.
-
I am coming, reg or not. I will try to get a check out the first of the week.
-
I certainly hope to get to go. I already have the campsite rented, but with no job, the wife had first veto powers.
Most likely I will be there, might need to carpool up there to save some money, certainly don't want to drive up alone. Starting to get excited!!!!
I am in Aptos, Santa Cruz area, anybody from here or farther South coming my way?
Stoggie

Stoggie, I'm going and would be happy to give you a ride, but the wife and daughter are coming too and she says the car is gonna be too full of all of our camping/fishing gear to fit anybody else...
:smt009
I disagree, but I am already using up all my WAF points to get her to come up...if she decides to flake (which is a definite possibility) I will send you a PM right away...I will be heading up Friday AM and back on Sunday.

Jim
Thanks for the offer, but I know from last year, more than two guys and all the gear is too much.
I am sure something will work out between now and then.
I fully plan on being there and will drive up if necessary.
Thanks again

This sounds great. Count me in. Any possibility for "T" shirts with a pocket? I'd probably want an extra or 2 if so in XL.
I live here in Shelter Cove in case you need any local help. Anyone who has not visited Shelter Cove be advised the last 21 miles will take you almost an hour drive time. I happen to know this year you can get great coffee, french crepes, tasty soup, sandwiches and great take out pizza (new owner) at the north end of the cove at the Inn of the Lost Coast. See you there.(http://)
-
Hey, Boogieman! I just searched my photo archives for awhile and couldn't find where I met you in Trinidad with your wife and your unique kayak motor setup - was it a year ago? Two? I'm glad we'll see you at the Cove for GS4! I don't know if I'll be able to get shirts with pockets, but I'll let you know - keep an eye on this thread for developments on that. Be sure to send your registration in to avoid a late fee and not miss out on the free shirt.

-
I will be diving Friday for sure. I hope to roll in Thursday night. I hope the dive conditions are like last year!
Matt
-
We definitely hope for conditions like last year! I'm sure you'll find someone to dive with on Friday. Afternoon low will be around 5-6 probably. So a just-after-lunch dive would catch the top of the tide and nice clean water, or waiting til later could be a nice calm low tide dive before sunset - that's kinda what we did last year the day before the tournee.
-
Check is finally in the mail :smt004 Shirts 2XL and L :smt003

Don't know if I'm doing this right but here's a picture I took about 2 hrs ago at the Shelter Cove launch ramp. First salmon of the season so far, heard they landed 5 or 6 total today plus several shakers.

Yeah!!!! :smt007
How deep are they fishing? Thanks for the tip. :smt001
-
cajun - thx for putting up those photos. :smt001

The one in the picture was on a deep six so can't be too deep, somewhere around "white rock". The others I heard were at 70' with downriggers, don't know where.
You can add a stainless steel "Boogieman gaff"(hand made and heli-arc welded by me) to your prize list for the biggest Ling, I'll try to send you a picture. I'll have a few for sale as well at $30 each.

Andy no problem at all on the kayak on my rack. Can't wait.

You got it. Let me know when you will be here so I can get it to you. These "spike gaffs" are not only handy for big lings, cabs, halibut, etc but also great for self defense from fur balls, etc. Thanks, Boogieman (Dan)

Hi Eric:
I can't make it to GS4 but, would like a T-Shirt in instead of a refund of my $25. :smt001 Worst case I'll donate my Fee to someone who hasn't paid yet!

I talked with the owner (Mike) of the Lost Coast Inn today regarding the GS4. After learning about the tournament Mike offered to give a discount for participants staying at his Inn for this event. I asked if he could include those who have already booked a reservation and he was agreeable to that also. I didn't get any specific numbers but would help if I had an idea of how many rooms may be needed. Mike also offered use of the deck area, fire ring, and conference room for this or future events. Let me know what you think and how to get an idea of those interested as well as already booked.
Also here's a picture of some Boogieman Gaffs I have ready. One has a float, some have barbs, one with measuring rings. I have various lengths from 18" to 24" Specifically designed for kayak fishing. I can make them to order if anyone is interested.

Wow, thanks for that. I am booked there for 3 nights. Capt Kayak I believe is also there.

I think the float is a great idea. I have farmed enough stuff into the deep for a lifetime. Seems like the barb would be helpful with such a straight hook. You have one pre-sold with a float and barb. I'll get it Friday afternoon or evening.
-
I'm not sure who's staying at Mike's Inn - just wait for those watching this post to get back to you on it, or maybe put up a different thread to catch more attention. Thanks for advocating for the group. :smt001

i'd like to try diving for the first time up in shelter cove. probably gonna rent a thicker wetsuit. hopefully learn some things from you guys and leave with some abalone

Was just on the phone trying to book a campsite, talking with a girl in the deli, said her "good friend" just got his limit of salmon.... when asked how deep? didn't know... all she knew is they were trolling..... :smt044 :smt044 :smt044 Works for me!!!
I'm pumped up... some great fishing/diving/and to meet some new and old fishaholics....... :smt001

I trolled there Wednesday afternoon from 40-60 FOW and out to about a mile and a half from the launch - no bites, but I was all warm and fuzzy to be back OTW. The fish are scattered, but they're there! Shakers and some pretty dinky legal fish are common, and a 10 pounder is a decent potential. I hope to return this Sunday with Domenic for a more extended session. :smt007

Bring your ab-aspirations, everyone, because the minus tides in the mornings will allow ANYONE to find some abalone - maybe even in street clothes! No joke.
and... not to get ahead of myself, but, if it's flat and the wind cooperates and I don't stay up too late and drink too much on Saturday night... :smt003 I want to paddle up north of the Cove 2-4 miles to a very special reef that is known for lots of big abs. The vis may suck, and it may be a washing machine, but there are some hogs up there, and it would be rockpicking or shallow diving at the minus tide. We'll see if wind and WX allow it. :smt001
-
I'm in for getting the big abs. :smt006 Can't wait , hopefully we can get some great conditions again..

SWEEEETTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!
I managed to find a reasonably priced 7mm westuit package (had to go 3XL... :smt009) that I was able to buy, and I will work on getting together as much of the other required gear before then as I can....
Will get my card and will keep my fingers crossed!!
Haven't picked an abalone since 2001!!!

Took the MBK kayak class yesterday along with 4 others(I'm horrible with names but it was nice to meet you guy's!) Anyways the class was top notch and Aaron shared allot of useful knowledge both for fishing and safety! Would highly recommend the MBK class to anyone who is thinking about it, you won't leave disappointed!

Yes, I was there as well, and my memory of names is as bad as yours, but now we know 3 out of the five, you, myself and tiny. I would also highly recommend the class, I had a great time and learned a lot.
In terms of GS4 I guess I am in as well. I hemmed and hawed for the last month, deciding whether to register and getting out on the ocean in the Saturday class sealed the deal for me. I just sent in my $25.00 today, so hopefully it will reach Eric by the 15th. Just about a month left!

i was also there at MBK. i had the red ocean trident. name's george, but don't worry i'm horrible with names too.
can't wait to head up north for some rockies

No sweat - if someone says they sent it I won't cut them off for a free t-shirt if it arrives a day or two after the 15th.
I'm glad you're coming - WTG on the safety class, Guys. :smt001

I talked to Aaron at MBK after GS3 about designing a class just for kayak anglers and he developed one h**l of a class. Not just for newbies either, I took it myself and got alot out of it. Thanks for attending and look forward to fishing with you. Scott

Hope it's not too late. Just got clearance from the wife. Check is in the mail today. I'd be up there with my 12 yr old. He wants to catch some abs ;)
If not too late, my T size is Large.
Question on place to stay. Could someone suggest a place? Motel or campground would be ok.
Regarding food, are we pretty much on our own? Is there some sort of a group meal planned?
Sorry for all these questions. This thread is getting too long. Kinda hard to mine info out of.
Can't wait to meet many of you.

- If you like camping, the camground is available. For Motels: Marina (most economical and close to camp ground), Inn of the lost Coast (NCKA's discounted), The Tide Inn (I think it's completed booked by NCKAers).

- Yes, there'll be a pot luck (bring your fav. dish to share).
Can't wait to meet many of you.

I am staying at the Inn of the Lost Coast mainly because I am bringing Molly and I stayed there last year. After seeing all of the motels last year, the Inn of the Lost Coast was the nicest although it is a mile or so from the launch. The rooms have a full sized fridge and freezer and a great view of the lost coast. It also has a coffe shop and pizza place which are pretty good. The best food was at the potluck followed by the store at the campground. Surprisingly good burgers and fish and chips there.
-
Thanks for the info Sonny.
I couldn't get a hold of anyone from Mario's Marina Motel. Would've like a room there since it's so close to the action. The campground has plenty of space left. However, I booked a room at Inn of the Lost Coast since the rate is not too bad ($125/night and possibly with some group discount).
I guess I'll see you there Scott.
I was able to get a room at Mario's Marina Motel. (Good deal. $110/night already includes tax)

So...how's the Salmon fishing in Shelter Cove today? Any good news Eric?

ONE MORE MONTH,
I for one can't wait :smt003

teams I know,
long fish, 3 longest fish, AOTD point system?
Thanks again for organizing this great event, you rock! :smt003

Definitely not too late - welcome to the GS4 Madness. :smt004
I'd be up there with my 12 yr old. He wants to catch some abs ;)
He should be able to do that - a wetsuit is important but not absolutely necessary.
If not too late, my T size is Large.
Again, not too late. :smt001
Question on place to stay. Could someone suggest a place? Motel or campground would be ok.
I see you got in at the motel by the cleaning station - that IS really close to the action, and I've stayed there before. The potluck is a couple hundred yards west at The Tides Inn - easy walk.
Regarding food, are we pretty much on our own? Is there some sort of a group meal planned?
You're on your own for food except for Saturday night's potluck and awards - bring something to share. Otherwise, the campground deli - right across the street from your motel - has lots of good hot food (one of the only places I'll buy fish and chips), beer, picnic supplies...etc., and the general store 5 minutes up the hill has other basic grocery stuff. I'd bring some food, live off deli, enjoy the potluck, and crash gourmet camps like Fish Master1's and KayakJack's. :smt003
Sorry for all these questions. This thread is getting too long. Kinda hard to mine info out of.
Good one! :smt044 Last year's thread finally died 2 weeks after the event and was 56 pages. :smt005
-
Eric, have you decided on the tourney format yet?
teams I know,
long fish, 3 longest fish, AOTD point system?
The teams are for safety and spirit - we'll score individually.
AOTD point system. Your longest fish per species will count for points, and a bonus "inch" worth of points is allowed for C&R (as long as a good photo was taken). So if you get a 30" lingcod, a 20" black, a 20" greenling, and a 20" cab you would score (30x5) + (20x7) + (20x11) + (20x7) for a score of 650. If you released the ling and the cab you'd add 12 more points. If you released all fish you'd be in the running for a "special prize" to be issued by "Abking". :smt004
And don't forget the "other" species on the list... :smt002
Here's the list:
Scoring Scale
Rockcod = 7 pts/in
Cabezon = 7 pts/in
Salmon = 5 pts/in
Halibut = 5 pts/in
Ling = 5 pts/in
Trout = 7 pts/in
Smallmouth = 9 pts/in
Largemouth = 8 pts/in
Sturgeon = 3 pts/in
Striped Bass = 5 pts/in
Lake (Mackinaw) Trout = 6 pts/in
Kokanee = 10 pts/in
Catfish = 5 pts/in
Panfish = 12 pts/in
Spotted Bass = 8 pts/in
Steelhead = 6 pts/in
White Seabass = 4 pts/in
Flounder = 8 pts/in
Greenling = 11 pts/in
Surf Perch = 12 pts/in
-
Is there a max number of species we're allowed to enter? Like a max of 4 species, or is it as many as you can catch?
-
...as many as you can catch, of course!
-

-
Where can I get a Crappie at Shelter Cove :smt044 :smt044 :smt044
Hmmm... It may be time to do some research into potential stocked ponds up in the pot-growin' country near the Cove... :smt002
Seriously though, I think catching a lingcod, cabezon, greenling and rockfish will be enough of a challenge (although I caught all but the cab yesterday while salmon trolling! :smt005). If someone could catch a "bonus" fish it would likely be a flattie or a perch. :smt001
-
By "flattie" I assume you mean halibut. But there are also mighty flounders out there too! I caught a 19" rock sole last July. :smt002
-
I'll be perch fishing too :smt002 :smt003
-
I'll accept late registrations through May 1st for the $25 entry price. I can't promise you a free t-shirt for that, but I'll try. Those who've said the check's in the mail (lucky13 and maybe a few others) I'll make sure you get a shirt if your check arrives soon.
Eric Stockwell
PO Box 432
Loleta, CA 95551
I'll have a few additional black t-shirts with the blue graphics that I'll give to late entries, and I'll have a limited number of white long sleevers for sale for $20 - they're gonna be cool. :smt001
Folks who have mentioned along the way that they want additional shirts - sorry I didn't record those requests. I'm on a mission here, and keeping track of everyone's additional requests takes a backseat to overall organization. Hopefully everyone who wants additional shirts will get one. I'm making the black t's with the blue graphics for tournee entries, and I'm making a limited number of the long sleeve white t's for those who want extra shirts. The white t's cost substantially more - that's why they'll be $20. I went into this saying I'd raffle off any monies from entries over and above receipts for the shirts, the boat, plates/napkins/forks/trash bags for the potluck. Now that I'm getting the additional shirts I need to amend and say that any monies I get from the white shirts will go to pay for the white shirts and excess from that sales effort will build the GS5 fund, which is my wallet. :smt001 It's still the case that I'll raffle off excess from the registrations after the black shirt receipts, boat, potluck stuff...etc. I may even raffle off a couple of the white shirts - it will all come together and work out. :smt006
Here's a basic accounting, and I will be pleased to provide the full accounting at the tournee:
entries so far (including me) - 56 x $25 = $1400
grand prize - Trident Angler 15 = ($650)
70 black T's = ($600)
So right now there's $150 for potluck supplies, some lamination sleeves for media I'll give out at the event, and any other tournee related items. Additional registrations (I expect at least 10) will provide money for some cash handouts at the awards potluck - that'll be cool to basically refund someone's entry and pay for some of their gas and beer. :smt001
I'm starting to get excited about this... :smt048 :kick :metal 8)

Eric,
Thanks for all of your hard work. Putting on an event is no easy task. I'm sure it's way too late to offer assistance for this year but if there's anything I can do to help with the organization of the event, I'm happy to lend a hand. I have never organized a fishing tournament but I have organized several pretty large charity golf tournaments in the past. I'm retired and have more time than money but I would be happy to help if needed.

Cmon sonny, start the countdown.

I really want to, but Mooch gave me warning about the count down! :smt003 I'll start the count down after he's leaving for Alsaka.

Thanks, Martin. I have been on cruise control here - enjoying the time I put in to it and aiming for an outcome that permits me to do a minimal amount of work at the event. If I need some assistance I'll let the board know what my needs are, and any individuals who offer help are really appreciated. :smt001

Don't know about that, but I think the catch and release element of the tournament rules should draw some attention to the fact that our group is wanting to promote a more sustainable attitude than that of limits. At the same time, it should be a very clear representation of how important access is - specifically at Shelter Cove, but also true for other launch points.

If people want to go at noon, I'll be there.

-
Pat sounds like a good plan. Want to buddy up?

PK's going PimpDaddy on us - that sounds like a plan, My Man! :smt003
I'll get there some time midday Friday. If it's flat take a look up at Abalone Point at the north end of the airstrip... Potentially awesome fishing, very challenging diving.

Sonny's apparently got the gift of "higher math" - I'd think 21 days is 3 weeks, so 3 weeks from today is Wednesday the 12th...
Maybe he's counting down the days until perma-grin sets in and sleep is no longer possible. :smt003

Is anyone coming from SF leaving Thursday that wants to Carpool? I will share GAS.. please pm... my car broke down so its gonna be your car.. unless I will get one before the event..Thanks

They are getting us all together they moved me from 85 to 65. I called and got the info from Sarah. They are setting us all up in a group across from each other instead of in a line.
I will be arriving Friday mid day as well and will look for everyone for the Salmon troll and crabbing.
Look forward to seeing everyone soon :smt002
-
Yeah John, you're absolutely welcome to join us on Friday. And I've still got that seat for you too, if you want me to bring it.
9am IS early at Shelter Cove, Scott ;~)

Yeah, they moved me over to 67...if you see a long haired 4 year old girl running around, or coming up and asking you what're you doing that's my daughter Valentina!! She's harmless and fearless, but if she is bugging anybody just let me know!!!
:smt006
I will be looking to try and go out and get some abs once we roll in and get set up!!
Can't wait to get up there!!!!
Sincerely,
Jim
-
look for me jim , i might be killin time fishing the rocks untill peeps start movin in, ill dive with ya though!.
-
I haven't heard much from the Cove lately - any boats get out at all this week, Boogieman? I doubt it with the major wind and lump. I'm glad it's getting it out of its system now, so we'll have flat water for the tournee! *(Praying Smiley...)
-
Nice job. Looks to be a better turnout than any of the BAM Tourneys.
I will be having a wedding in my backyard that day....NO NOT MINE..
It would be great to hang with the crowd. Looks like it won't happen until Albion.
Good luck to all and be safe.

Hi guys and gals
I hope everyone is as excited as I am about this event.
Eric has worked very hard to make this event what it is and I thank him.
Even though this is my first time to Shelter Cove, I feel as if I have been there before due to all the great posts on the site from years gone by.
I am verry excited to try new things (Ab diving/Yak Surfing) and meeting new members. I am also hoping that some of those names in the not paid list will still be comming as they are part of this NCKA family of ours and it would be nice to see them and share the experiance of GS4 together.
If you make 1 event this year make sure this is it.
See you all soon,
Eric
21 days till Sat. May 15

Here's a couple pics from the Cove. Just took the ocean shot this AM, the campground shot yesterday. Beach weather in the Cove has been good as it's protected from the wind (except south wind). Could do well for abs in the cove but has been too windy for much lately outside the cove. I haven't heard of any fishing for the last couple of days but looking foreward to getting back out soon.
-
Wow, this sounds like an awesome event. I would love to go to it however I have a few questions. I have read through all 35 pages and am still not sure if I need to get certification for the ocean or if since I have been out with others I am ok. Can some please direct me as to what I need to do?
Thanks,
Kicker :smt001
-
Kicker - The rules state that you must fish as part of a team. Each team must have prior ocean experience, a VHF radio, camera, measuring device...etc. So you're good to go. Friday evening we'll have a little safety seminar and tournee check-in down at the boat ramp. I'll announce more details on that later. If you're thinking of coming then do it! :smt001
-
Kicker,
Glad to see you yesterday, as I said, there will be quite a few experianced ocean kayakers there to learn from and you coulden't find a better group to hang with. If you need any gear - let me know - I'm sure I have extras.
This is the one event not to be missed.
See you there,
Eric
P.S.
Glad to hear your wife found a new job.
This is a hard time to be looking
-
Thanks...Count me in, I just called the campground and they think that they still have some sites open. Is this Friday thru Sunday? I need to know how many nights to get. Eric, I will get the money in the mail to you and if you have any shirts left, I wear a XL.
Thanks,
Kicker :smt001
-
I'm officially out, so I guess that means you can take me off the list Eric.
Absentmindedly, I made plans to fly the wife down to see her friend on the very weekend you lucky dogs will be living it up at GS4, leaving me with the girls.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for next year. Can't wait for the report.

If your entry check gets here before any others you may get a shirt, Kicker - it's getting down to the end of the supply. See you at the Cove.

It's Santa Cruz time. :-)
-
Don't worry, all you lovers of Santa Cruz Slackers, I made the executive decision to let a certain contingent of SC Slackers off the hook by guaranteeing them late registration and a shirt - I'm only doing that for a select few, so don't ask! :smt003
Speaking of shirts...
Got 'em today, and they turned out great. I'm stoked. :smt004

Shirts look great!! :smt004
Thanks again Eric for putting all this together!!

Awesome shirts, thanks for putting all of this together Eric. I talked to a buddy of mine today that he may come up but not fish the tourney, are there going to be any extra kayaks for touring if needed?
Thanks,
Kicker :smt001
-
Great Shirts! I can't wait to start my collection. Too bad past years aren't available. I guess I have to settle for IV through ??????? Thanks for all of your hard work Eric.
-
Too cool I want one of ea. they look so good

Guys going crabbing and abbing Friday I would like to tag along too..I plan on getting up there around noon so I will look for you all.
I still need to get a new wetsuit jacket before then...mine some how shrank..can't seem to fit into it..so if anyone has a good diveshop recommendation in the EastBay por favor.
ok...laugh away at me but for the potluck can I make a suggestion that we furnish name tag stickers.. I know we have many newer members (me included) and frankly my memory just plain sucks... It would be nice to put a name behind the face / NCKA handle.

I started reading from the top searching for the tournament format and rules but figured I'd just ask...which page is it on or is it yet to be established..? ie time start /end , included fish, teams etc..

We are planning on launching around 9AM Friday and heading south to drop traps. Of course if PK sleeps in... :smt005 By noon we should be salmon trolling. Call us 69 and we can give you a gps coordinate. Head south a hundred yards or so before heading west to clear the shallow area and wash rocks.

Head south further than that. If it's rough at all you need to go about 1/4 mile south before heading west - breaking waves can pop up anywhere west of Pilot Rock with no warning.
Al - Sorry I never got your check - that only happened to one other person. I've been receiving payments in 3 days from the bay area.

It's like this: my first impulse is, "yeah, I've got you covered." But I have lots on my plate. I'd say try to track something solid down and only rely on me for emergency needs. :smt004
I'll likely have an extra farmer john there, but I can't commit it to anyone at this time. :smt001

I will bring an extra farmer john, dry top and booties. It is a medium large size (5'8"-6') (150-190#) however. BTW, thanks for organizing. It has been a long winter. Just hope the WX is better than our opener this weekend. :smt013

Actually I think it's when it's turned around (palm toward the gesturer) that it means FU. If Sonny's using it we know it means "Peace, Bro - let's share some Good Times". :smt003

I am coming, and GN is coming along with me. Carpooling with baitNbeer. Can't wait!

Took this picture yesterday from above the campground. I would like to know if some NCKA'ers would like to participate in a GS4 photo contest? I would put up a custom (made to winners order) stainless steel "Boogieman Kayak Gaff". If any interest I'll give more details later. Keeping my fingers crossed for great weather like last year. See you soon - Boogieman

Nice pic, Dan!

Emailed the waiver back...let me know if you need anything else or don't get it.
Thanks again!!

Check out the scorecard...
Input welcome. :smt001
EDIT FRIDAY NIGHT - I fixed it for the C&R bonus
-
Great idea on the scorecards. Maybe add another column to indicate if the fish was Released (bonus pts, baby!). Like a checkbox between the Length and Multiplier columns?
Also wanted to remind you that May 1st is opening day @ Shelter Cove too!
...opening day of Pacific Halibut season!

Oh, I have my eye on the hali season, thx. :smt004
As for the C&R bonus... Duh! I can't believe I threw that together this afternoon and forgot that! Of course that'll be on there.
I've been thinking a bit about how many fish we could potentially catch (and kill) on tournee day and over the weekend in general. While I don't want to preach fishing ethics, I do want to remind the group that we will be perceived as a group and, while we're welcome there because we're bringing much needed commerce in tough times, we want to show respect to the locals and the resources we're tapping into. I encourage everyone to consider all the C&R they can do w/o hurting fish. IMO, the ethics of C&R require that one would keep a floater or otherwise wounded fish. C&R should not be used recklessly as a means of upgrading. All this thinking has me thinking I haven't been the most awesome example of best practices C&R w/ all the rockfish and lings I C&R in my videos. I can say this: I am always trying to be gentle on Nature - I fish shallow, hardly ever even see a swim bladder activated, and I keep a fish that's wounded significantly. Another factor is that I use large tackle and often ditch the shrimpflies quickly or don't use them at all. This is one of my secrets to big lings, but I'll share it because it helps with not catching too many non-target, smaller fish - use one big terminal tackle for the lings. The bigger and uglier the better.
Anyway, I hope to be calculating on tournee day how we, as 75 yakfishermen, caught around 1000 fish(!) including 200 lingcod(!!), dozens of salmon(!!!), tons of rockies, and even some perch. And I hope my data collection and analysis effort shows that we gently released the vast majority of what we caught. Coming in with photos of gently handled and released fish is a goal for me - last year I got 3rd place with a CPR 32" lingcod. I respect those who will keep some fish - I certainly will keep some at some time in the weekend and maybe tournee day. Just please do what you can to protect our reputation as a group. Thanks. :smt001

Hi Eric,
I just emailed my waiver, please let me know if you do not get it.
Thanks,
Kicker :smt001
-
Eric,
I always use you as an example when I have an excited customer buying a kayak. I show my videos and your and always promote catch and release (except the grocery shopping the last day of events for waf points). You are an inspiration and being the father of a 5 month old I want my son to be able to enjoy the waters I love so much.
Thanks for everything.
Greg
I also carry a venting tool and will sell at cost to anyone interested to protect the species we respect.

Glad to have you, Slaker. Is that "Slay-ker"? Cuz that's pretty cool! :smt003
You're good to go. :smt001

I've got 70 or so entry packets bagged up - that's all of us who are currently signed up (or on the allowable Slacker list :smt003 :smt002). These entry packets consist of a t-shirt and a hawg trough extension with connector. I have to add the rules and scorecard next week. I should have some other goodies to add to them before 5/15 too. :smt001
If anyone wants to send me a box full of something to add to these gallon Ziploc's that'd be cool.

Eric - I will be keeping some fish on Friday for the cioppino on Saturday. Saturday will be all CNR, even salmon. I don't use a hog trough because I am not in the AOTY and lifting the fish out of the water puts additional stress on the fish. I usually measure them in the water with a boga with the measure on my paddle. Unfortunately this makes photo documentation difficult since it takes both hands to measure. Any suggestions?
As far as releasing rockfish caught from depth, the research I read recommended quickly descending them instead of puncturing the air bladder. I use the Shelton Descender but other techniques and devices can be used. http://seagrant.oregonstate.edu/sgpubs/onlinepubs/g05001.pdf
Thanks! Scott

Eric,
I have read and agree with the waiver, but I don't have a scanner so I will fill it out and bring it with me so I can hand it to you when i get there (hopefully mid Fri.)
Can't wait for the 14th to get some well needed time off for chillin at the cove :smt003

Scott - Friday pre-fish can only be for salmon, halibut, perch...etc. unless you're fishing from the rocks - it's a season thing. :smt001
As for a good way to measure the fish w/o taking them out of the water, it's often necessary to remove them from the water in order to remove the hook, so you could get a shot then. I hear what you're saying though, and I think it represents the best ethic to leave the fish in the water. How about relying on your teammate(s) to snap a photo. If the photos clearly show the fish up against the side of the boat where you have some measurements marked off then you'll be good.
Are you on a team, Scott? I'm looking for a teammate, but I have pretty strict requirements: cool physicians who yak w/ their dogs. :smt003 I'd be glad to snap pics of your catches.
On the C&R of salmon, I don't disagree with it, but it does come with the possibility of a bleeder or a worn out fish (as the rock and ling fishing does). I'd suggest that you prepare yourself for the need to keep fish.

I'll have some laminated maps available - maybe 1 per team - with the marine topography around Point Delgada. Based on what conditions we get I will write on them to show what to be careful of. The reef all around the point from the launch to in front of the hotels is potentially deadly on many days that are fishable in more open water to the south and then east-west on a line between the buoys but slightly north.
It's very important that no one assume they can fish or even travel through areas in close around the reef. I've seen some hairball situations develop out there. When Al came back around that corner (where he capsized) it was a CALM day. I'd say I would only venture into that area about 10% of the time or less, based on my experience at the Cove. More on that Friday evening at the ramp for check-in and a safety seminar. :smt001
-
Eric, That's great information and even greater news that you will have current cautionary info. Having never been on the water in that area, it's great to know that some of the risk can be mitigated by having the right information available. Thanks again for all of your hard work organizing and putting on the event.
Martin
-
Hey Black Ab, you forgot to make all your secret spots on that map! :smt003
Emailed off the waver! I also finshed up some knockers I will post up soon. I can't wait!
BanjoTad and I will be "Team Killer Ocean Kayakers", or "Team KOK" for short :smt005 We considered the Backlash Boys, but didn't want to be mistaken for a boy band, although Tad does have some groupies.
I have to look up the salmon regs, is it barbless only and no barbed hooks on the boat? They change it all so much, it is hard to keep track. I would hate to go after salmon and have to paddle back in and back out to go after Rock Fish. I am going to go get some little planer boards and some anchovies and hootchies. I would love to catch a big old Salmon!

Eric - I will be keeping some fish on Friday for the cioppino on Saturday.
Thanks! Scott
haha i was thinking of making cioppino too
Go for it. we can have a cioppino cookoff. There will be over 100 people there saturday. My pot can only feed 20-30.
-
I'm not much of a cheff but would be glad to help get rid of the entries :smt005.
Also will gladly donate any fish and crab I catch for the cook off
-
I'm thinking maybe 150-200 at the potluck!
Bring a dish that serves 10 or more and you're good, but make a plan other than bringing just raw meat - you have to cook it to qualify for scarfing others' potluck offerings! I will have a BBQ there and will supply briquets. Fresh fillets would be easy to cook up with just some garlic and spices - feeding hot bites to passers-by... :smt007
-
Here are the knockers! The one with NCKA and GMS IIII is the prize for the tourney.

Hey Eric, my scanner/printer no workee. Can you bring a copy for me to sign at the cove? For i too am a slacker.
-
I was out of the cove most of today, took this photo of the "Tides Inn" this afternoon. As you can see it was a bit windy but the good news is look at the gulls - they were diving all around and feasting on bait. I checked the cleaning station and didn't see any evidence of success. Guess the fish may be safe till GS4. See yall
-
Thank you for the fishing info and beautiful picture of SC Dan. See you soooooon!

those gaffs are clean! how much?
Thanks BaitNBeer, unfortunately I already sold the gaffs I made and gave the last one away to my Dad for fathers day. That was the last of my gaff hooks until a trip to Sacramento. In fact I only have one or two knockers left to sell. I started a new job in my department, and have been short on time this year. I will start having weekends off so hope to make some more and attend some more tournaments!
My Dad is coming with me this year. Not to enter, just to get a taste of kayak fishing. You will have to come by and check out his gaff.
BlackAb, I have a bunch of lures for you again. Just as a thanks for putting this all on.
I got my Ab card and put new rubbers on my spear guns! I also got a nice little ACR strobe for my PFD. My old strobe was cheesy, this thing about blinds you when activated!

I haven't forgot about GMS IV but I did forget about this thread. I haven't read any of it so now I have to go back and read 40 pages. I plan to be there Friday fairly early. I will be diving for abs and hitting a ling hole that was very productive rod/reel last year. I don't think any of my buddies are coming up with me so I would like some company. We can get abs shallow. The ling spot is about 30' deep. Any takers?
-
I got a few gaffs and knockers that I plan on bringing up. May not be in the same ballpark as Matt but happy to sell/trade.

Looks like 2nd place will get that Trident Angler 15...
I specified in the rules that the AOTD points winner gets to choose a prize, then 2nd places chooses one, then 3rd...etc. I made it that way because I'm not eligible for the "grand prize" new kayak, so I'll choose the new paddle when I win. :smt004 :smt006

I don't know what it is, but I've been having trouble concentrating at work. I get butterflies in the stomach. Kept thinking about what I need to bring, things I need to prepare, coming up with a plan of attack, what food to bring to the pot-luck, how am I going to put an extra kayak on the roof of the van? Meanwhile, I total forgot about my wife's birthday dinner tonight until she called to find out what time I'd be home. The last time I felt like this was probably when I was planning my wedding, that's 19 years ago. I don't know man. This is just weird. It's not like I haven't fished or been to the ocean before. I wonder what voodoo magic spell this Eric guy had cast on the participants. Perhaps it's the magic of the Lost Coast?

That's awesome, Greg - thank you so much for your efforts toward GS4. Greg made the prizes happen. It's as simple as that. There's no way I was motivated to go get a nice boat at cost from some retailer or wannabe sponsor, and Greg literally made it happen. Well done, Greg, on the overall effort and we're stoked to get to demo some awesome boats - all of us owe you a beer. :smt001

Glad you can make it. You're welcome to join me in site #100. I have it booked Friday through Sunday, though I may extend through Monday if things fall in place at work.
Anyone know if a kayak cart is required for the launch?
-
Sweet. Jim/Dr Hab has a spot for me. You don't need wheels if you drive down to the launch. If you wanna walk (which many do) you'll want wheels.
-
No wheels required. You literally park on the beach to unload yak & gear.
-
I think I will try and walk/wheel down so I can leave the wife and kid sleeping with the car...hopefully I can find somebody's car to stash my wheels in while we are out fishing?!
-
If the weather and water are anything like today there won't be room to park down at the beach. On tournee morning the beach and launch area will be huge, but by the time we come in it will be high tide - parking spots down there will be at a premium, and I'd say it's best to wheel down and make a plan for your wheels.
-
Only cause I dont Know how Im going to react to the patch Ill bid 523.33.Beware ive been training, drinking till10:30 and have been eating a lot of Bbq then paddling 12 miles the last couple weekends :smt044 .Thats so funny about feeling like wedding plans,I can relate .I dont have a group or buddy ,maybe I can hook up when You all see the shape Im in :smt044See you all soon,Gabe
-
Eric is there a fence/rail/post or something that wheels can be cable locked to down by the launch?? My yak is too little to carry my wheels on it!! :smt044 :smt044
Sincerely,
Jim
-

Sincerely,
Jim
There's probably something you could lock to, but it may just be better to walk the wheels back up or to just drive your boat down and then drive the rig back up - it's really close. If we get there early enough we'll get spots, but there are only about 15 spots. It'll be a zoo I'd say!
-
No worries Jim. You can lockup the wheels the the fence, but you can probably just stash them in somebody's car/truck. If I can't park down there (highly likely because I'll be last 1 to launch), I'll just drive down & unload gear then repark above. This m/b a good plan for most to consider [unload on the beach then repark].
-
Thanks Pat!!

Hey BlackAb, have you heard any Salmon reports from the cove? I put a little tackle box together for some Salmon trolling Thursday and Friday, with dipsey divers, weight releases, and barbless hooks. I will pick up some anchovies before I head over. I have some Kwickfish to troll as well. Have you had much luck on those Apex lures? I may see if I can find some.
I have started packing. I let my gear get to scattered this year, it just tells me I have to get out and use it more!
I should be rolling in Thursday evening if all goes well. I can hardly wait! Unfortunately I won't be there near enough time for all I want to do!

There are definitely salmon being caught, Matt - I haven't heard a report from yesterday and today, but I was there Friday and there were some fish caught in shallow (60 FOW) - there were lots of shakers (less than 24") and also reportedly some big hawgs broken off after being seen. We could potentially hook into some huge salmon! Quite a few salmon, including mostly shakers, were hooked down near the bottom, so what I was seeing on my fishfinder down there could've been salmon and not rockfish - I'm not in to hooking a bunch of lings and rockfish while targeting salmon unless the season is open for everything - that'll be cool for the tournee - put a chovie down there on a set of barbless hooks and you should be able to keep just about anything you haul up. I'm probably only going to fish barbless hooks and chovies all day for the tournee.

OK,
I have 3 Kayaks being used for the event.

Any others? Just want to have this setup so I don't spend time on it Friday night/Saturday morning.

This is going to be a llllooonnnngggggg week.
see you all there,

The latest NWS forecast for Cape Mendo to Pt. Arena out 10 NM:
FRI...NW WIND 5 TO 10 KT. WIND WAVES 2 FT OR LESS. W SWELL 6 FT.
The stars seem to be aligning in terms of the forecasts. It seems to occur only rarely, and for that reason, my three favorite forecast pages concurring on predicting the calm weekend to come is seeming pretty bizarre! I'm loving it!! Let's keep our fingers crossed for light winds and biting salmon - otherwise things seem to be coming together nicely. :smt001
Sleeping 5 full nights before this trip is feeling like the biggest challenge in front of me right now! :smt003
-
What page are the rules for the tourney on?
-
I'm going to need a boat tender. Someone to follow me around and hold my stringer and hand me sanwiches. I'll let you take a picture with my lings at the end of the day.

Here you go - see attachment here. :smt001
I have edited the rules. Please review the attachment.

Thanks to the 36 people who've sent in your waivers - it saves me lots of work at the Cove tracking people down.
Just a side note: next year the end of registration will be FIRM, and no one will be allowed to join in after it closes.
The swell forecasts are indicating this to me:
Friday looks to be 6' or so - that's very good and we should only have to deal with 2-3'. The swell appears to get slightly smaller each day through Monday!
:smt001

Anyone bringing the clubs to play that nine hole course along the air strip? I am thinking I will give it go since I don't often get to play all weekend without wife and kids. :smt004
-
I may join you Jim if time permits of course. I have not played for a while since last year when I
made that hole in one. 187 yards with #3 hybrid irons.

Weekend report from the cove.
Here's the report. Sat. May 8th, 15 to 20 boats worked all day for around 50 salmon and all but 2 or 3 were under size. Sunday, May 9th only 3 or 4 boats were out for salmon (Couple more for halibut). After running the shrimp traps, John, Rochell and I, while trolling back to the Cove came across a huge crab larvy bloom. In less than 1 hour, we our six salmon weighing up to 15 lbs. 4 came two at a time and not one of them was under size. What a difference a day (and a crab bloom) makes!

Here are screen shots of Friday 5AM, Saturday 5AM, Sunday 5AM and Monday 5AM. Looks like Friday will be the roughest early on, and that's NOT rough! Just wanted to make it known that Friday may be just a tad kicked up for diving - you may want to wait for Saturday or Sunday which look to be flatter.

67 paid on time!
There are 15 people on the list above who say they'll be there and will pay me at that time. Find me on Friday evening at the launch from 5-7PM, somewhere else around the Cove that evening, or at the launch before 8AM or YOU ARE NOT IN THE TOURNAMENT.
GOOD NEWS ON THE T-SHIRT FRONT - Everyone who registered paid on time gets a shirt, and some of the slackers get shirts too.
LATE REGISTRATION ENDED A LONG TIME AGO.
I've been thinking about how hard it's going to be to track down 60+ guys, meet and greet/catch up, and get the waiver signed. I'd rather just be able to shake your hand and give you your tournee pack. So I'd like to get the waivers out of the way now. IF you don't have the ability to scan then you can just email me stating that you acknowledge a total release of liability against me and my family regarding your voluntary participation at GS4.
Otherwise please do this:
PLEASE OPEN THE LINK HERE, PRINT AND SIGN THE WAIVER, SCAN IT, AND EMAIL IT TO ME AT eric@nlsco.com
Thank you. :smt001

Eric is the campground gonna provide firewood again this year?
-
Al
You are too cool for school
can't wait to get up there.
stoggie
-
I hope the campground gives us some wood again - anyone get word on that?...
42 Waivers emailed in - thank you!
-
As GS4 fast approaches I suddenly realize Patrick and I have not made camping arrangements. I called the campground and they say spots are still open.
I thought I would ask here first if there is anyone who has had to cancel so that we might pick up their spot and reimburse them. Yeah, I know, I am a slacker.
Edit/Update: I just spoke with Jack at the campground....plenty of sites available in our "special needs" area. But I will still throw it out there if any one is canceling we will be happy to take your spot...
-
I'm a late entry looking to share a campsite. All I need is a place to park the van. So if your looking to split costs and have room let me know.
Thanks, Jonesz
-
Same here, I need to park truck with someone. baitNbeer do you have a spot we can park at and kick down some coin? Also, I will be tying shrimp flies every night until then, run me down, I will sell them for $1.50 each at the tourney, but PM me if you want some and I will sell for a buck to pre-ordered flies.
-
im not sure how big the the site is but so far i got my truck , brdoprys ,dr feckatavious and darius , i commited to savin a spot for kevin cuz hes gonna get in late night, george should be rolln in early, but if theres enough room for everyone then its all good

The Cove is unique - the salmon seem to mingle with the rockfish alot. Trolling a chovie is, IMO, one of the best methods for catching a salmon (I've caught many at the Cove on that including a 21.5 and a 38 pounder - from the yak), and you'll ALSO catch lots of rockfish and lingcod on that, depending on how deep you troll...
Trade secret. :smt004

People have been finding a few sanddabs in the gut of salmon down here lately. How weird is that? Those 'dabs don't get no breaks!

Only 24 more waivers to go!!! Thank you for all your responses to my PM's. :smt008
It looks like we're very likely to have 80 paid participants - all at $25/each because I'm so wimpy about laying down the law... Anyway, I've also made a significant purchase from Lost Coast Tackle Co. to be able to provide some goodies for the tournee packets. IF we do get those 80 paid registrations at $25/each it looks like I'll end up with about $300 or more for raffles at the potluck. :smt001
Don't forget that turning in your scorecard is the only way to get in the raffle. Your scorecard comes in your tournee packet with the rules, a Hawg Trough Extension and connector, and the Lost Coast Tackle goodies.

I had a lot of trouble with motion sickness. These things have helped me:
Get up early enough that I can eat a couple hours before I go out. A banana and a small wheat muffin are plenty for breakfast if you get sick easy.
No coffee
I was using the patch and it didn't seem to help. I switched to meclazine chewable tabs (over the counter) and they helped a lot. Take them a few hours before yaking/diving.
Don't struggle with tangles and gear. Take your time look up and work through tangles and gear in a very relaxed way.
Don't overheat. If you dress too hot you are on your way to puking.
Used controlled breathing when diving. Some people breath hard through their snorkel when they are floating on the surface. You won't have time to stop the water from coming in your snorkel and down your throat if a swell goes over your snorkel. Control your breathing so you don't suck in water. Once you swallow a mouthfull of seawater you will probably be sick.
Stay away from wash rocks. The surgy water movement will destroy a delicate stomach. Get out in the open away from waves/surge and you will feel better.
Keep your yak organized so you don't have to twist around a lot or look down too much.
This stuff in combination has worked great for me.
-

Kicker :smt002
Welcome to NCKA Kicker. We are actually better then we sound except for some who talk more than actually catch fish. :smt005 Make sure you buddy up on a team and do bring some seasickness medication like scopace or transderm scopalamine. These are by prescription. If not bring dramamine.
-
meclazine chewable tabs thats the ticket...thats what i use Kicker...got some for u when u go out...I take it an hr before i go out...and everything amphibian says...hell Yeah...been there done that...it sorta sucks when you've taken a mouthful of salty water...and start puking...there goes your day.... :smt001

NWS forecast is now looking like a match to the my other sources which had already indicated a great weekend. I feel confident to announce that we are in for some EPIC conditions. Do not take this lightly. I have seen the best and the worst and everything in between. Many of us pride ourselves in our ability to yak and fish in less than perfect conditions, but I think we all cherish those days when the conditions become totally secondary to all else. We look like we're in for that. Let's all take a moment to reflect on our good fortune and to appreciate those brothers (and sisters) who, miles away up and down the north state, toil along with us to prepare for what is looking to be one of the most amazing experiences in our lives. This is real. I'm so stoked I could cry! :smt010 :smt001
-
I think that's flatter than last year and we caught a lot of fish last year.

Yeah that is sure better than GSII. :smt005 However, the mixed swell can be tricky so the potential for someone to go swimming is still a posibility.

Man your giving me goose bumps with these WX reports... a little AC/DC "If U want Blood" in the background, would make it more profound.....Hell Yes!!! I'm leaving @ 4am tomorrow.........SALMON........Just met a local from shelter yesterday @ work and was pumping him for intel...was telling him about GS4, said he'd be there if he could, has 3 boats...told him "imagine catching all those fish from a yak" sway him from the darkside....j/k...not :smt002
Thx for the WX Eric....

No Sledge, I didn't make Albion last year.
I got an idea of maybe trying to do some blackened abalone and/or fried in Zatarains that I am thinking should turn out pretty good...bringing up the cast-iron skillet, grease, spices and new stove so I am sure we will get something good going... :smt003
Wife is gonna make a big pot of Jambalaya for the potluck as well. :smt001

That mixed swell makes for some good boogieboarding near the ramp - and the surfers will be down at Deadman's Gulch just 350 yards to the east.

I can't sleep, I can't eat and I aint worth a shit at work (customers are tired of hearing about this weekend).

I spoke to Jack Sanford, the owner of the campground/deli, last night. He is rolling out the red carpet and giving us extra space to party and some free firewood! This was his firmest message:
DO NOT CLEAN FISH AT THE CAMPGROUND!!! I told him to please let me know if that happens, and he said, "it'll be easy to tell because I'll be kicking them out of the campground!"
He's a great guy and he's treated our group wondefully - be sure to use the fish cleaning station right at the top of the road to the launch.
Also be sure to patronize the deli at the campground early and often. They have great food and all the beer, ice, bait...etc. you'll need.
thx :smt001

Mike,
I'm at site 101 and the kids are doing great. They'll be at Albion but they are staying home this weekend. Not that Logan wanted to but Mom has to work so I get to play. I'll be getting in late on Thursday and want to get in the water for some abs first thing in the morning to catch that nice low tide before the afternoon swell comes in plus just wake my ass up with a nice cold swim.

Hey guys. I got space 99 at the campground and since me and my girl will only be using 1 parking spot and the limit is 2 i believe. If anyone needs a parking space let me know.
If it is still available, GN and I will be rolling in Friday night and would love to hook up with another Montana boy. Will kick down some dough also. PM me if it is a go.

It actually looks to me like it'll be sunny and hot down in the Cove. :smt001

I still have a parking space at 93 if any one needs it 94 is full

The only thing running through my brain is making sure not to forget anything. How can anyone work under these conditions? I need to get home and finish packing. Scott I got an extra Rapala measure stick(close to a Hog trough) for you if needed. We'll be using it a lot all day.

Attached here is a basic little map showing some features around the launch and the fishing grounds.

Eric extension cord little john and chips packed even washed off then grills for you
Also is there any need for single burner and 5 gal pot takes up a lot of space but if needed I'll bring it
-
2 – the Bell buoy area – about a mile SSE of the launch – try crabbing just northeast of here: Make sure your buoy is marked with your info! I lost A nice pot in that area due to A power boat! Maybe A big float for better vis for the boat crews! Just my 2 cents...

Last year we parked at the launch along the cliff and at high tide the cars were several feet from the water. Is that OK this year? BTW, thanks for the loaner hog trough.

Last year we parked at the launch along the cliff and at high tide the cars were several feet from the water. Is that OK this year?
The high tide around 2PM Saturday is a "low" high tide at around 5' or less. If the ocean is flat we should be OK. The best way to determine this will be to observe it on Friday's very similar tide around 1PM - especially since Friday has a slightly higher forecasted swell height.

Geez, my stomach hurts just thinking about packing all my stuff tonight haha! Wish I coulda started last night...now I'm gonna be up late packing more-gear&crap-than-I-need. But it will all be worth it by approx 10am Friday!

when the swell is coming out of the west or southwest , the cove offers little protection. Fortunately, it is not a big swell. I can't wait to take in that first big breath of salty-air and chase it down with a long cold swill of IPA.

I figured it would be a surf launch and will be rigged for a "wet landing". Looks like the waves may be surfable in a kayak which could be fun.
-
yeah, make sure you buckle-up for the surf-zone.
-
Boy, what a day! And still more to do!!! :smt009
But so far I have:
Finished my new camera mount (its sweet!) :smt007
Installed my FF on the new Hobie (ok, puck is still drying)
Installed turbo fins on the new drive (PITA) :smt005
Sorted all the rockfish tackle I think I should bring.
Charged the batteries and VHF
Purchased some new water shoes
Spooled my new reel (Abu 7001i)
Bought some Dramamine, and refilled Scopus patches
Still need to get PACKING!!! But not leaving until Friday morning, so have one more day :smt002
-
yeah, make sure you buckle-up for the surf-zone.
Stormsurf says "3ft @ 18 seconds from 188 degrees". So what will this translate to for set wave face height at the launch?
I haven't done a surf launch/landing in my new yak/Hobie yet. But I guess this might be my first opportunity! :smt003
-
My quick little job in Fort Bragg is a no go so we are leaving Thursday morning right after a quick little turkey hunt (camp meat) with a good buddy. Almost all packed but will be restless all night wondering what we forgot. See you up there mid day. WhooooHooooo!
-
It's gonna be my first real surf launch too. I'll take all the advice and assistance available.

OMG, I'm loving this talk of a surf launch!!! :smt005
Hate to burst your bubble, but I think I have really good news: there's no surf launch with this forecast. I'll wager a pretty penny on that. This launch is actually completely protected. I've gone out with 10' north swells and, although it's a bit more hairball with a south swell, you can go even when it gets up that high from the south too.
This from a guy who NEVER leashes stuff down - I don't do surf launch! :smt005 :smt003 :smt004
I'd also wager that the launch off the beach at The Tides won't even be a surf launch for much of the day Saturday and possibly all weekend. If the salmon don't start biting until late afternoon we may even see some diehards go right from the potluck out for a last troll through the glory zone!
-

A couple of years ago Patrick, Eric, Adam and I launched at the cove in greasy flat conditions only to discover 14+ foot swells over a mile out. We had fun trying to fish until an hour or so later when the swells increased and started breaking randomly. One of us even went for a swim at one point but was able to get back on his kayak without even getting his hair wet.
We retreated to calmer waters closer to the cove and fished in comfort. After finally negotiating our way back to the launch we were greeted with a very manageable landing. Great Times!
ps don't stare at the pictures too long...you'll get dizzy

Good point, Gabe - thanks for mentioning that. Use low gears on the downhill runs from the two mountain passes. Don't be in a hurry to get there or you never will. :smt009
When you see the "Welcome to Shelter Cove" sign KEEP IT IN LOW GEAR - NO JOKE.
You can crack a beer when your engine stops and smiling kayakers are approaching you from all sides. Soon, soon. :smt001

That's good to hear. I don't care to surf the yak either. I just seem to remember being up there before when there was some 2-3ft waves breaking near the launch in the winter wrapping around from the NW. I guess the diehard surf-launchers could always roll down the beach a-ways to get their salt water showers. :smt003

As for your description of work and your employees... ditto here - I'm a BAD man! :smt005

Customers are asking me about Trout and Bass fishing - and all I can think about is Rock Fish and Salmon.
Boy do they look at me funny when I talk about Jigs, Mooching and, Abs.
I just can't focus right now - I need to get on the road and clear my head :smt044
I must have a case of Anal Glacoma (cant see my A$$ at work today).

I am all loaded and about to hit the road. Just waiting on my dad. We are loaded, I will be lucky to get 8 mpg over the hill! :smt009 But it is worth it, I can hardly wait. I think I got 3 hrs of sleep last night, dreaming of lings and salmon. It has been to long. Maybe we need to make GMS a 4 time a year event.......
See everyone there!

FYI, after passing the town of Willits, take your time the rest of the way. I
must have counted at least 15 CHP last year just waiting for someone to make a mistake to get pulled over. One CHP actually followed me and Ariel for a good 15 minutes before deciding to make a U turn. It was a good thing that
we didn't get pulled over. We had beers between the seat and under our feet because there wasn't anymore room else where. :smt003

Woo-freaking-hoo.

Just printed out a big ol' stack of scorecards and rules/schedule for stuffin' in the tournee packets. There will be extra scorecards at the check-in.
Got a last minute email from a Robert Huff wanting to join in... Anyone know this person? I'll let people in for the $40 late fee, but we're outa shirts, and if any of the "SLACKERS" who haven't paid don't find me, pay their reg. fee, sign a waiver, get the rules/schedule and a scorecard then THEY ARE NOT IN THE TOURNEE. :smt045 :smt045 :smt045 :smt045 :smt045 :smt045

Jacks - I forgot to answer you on that weight question. I use a DeepSix diving sinker - the number 2 size is good I think. Otherwise a 6 ounce banana weight is a good option and much cheaper if you snag up.
See you soon!!!

Eric are you having some sort of name tags available? Would be helpful for the pot luck at least.

It apears I will have extra room in my site (#103)
I was supposed to ride up with Fishdit but it looks like he won't be making it.
If anyone needs to share a site - let me know tonight as I will be rolling out around 5am.
See you all there,

Just checked in to the OceanFront Inn. Not much wind. Definitely mixed swells hitting the shoreline. Not too bad though. I did see two yaks out by the bouy...they seemed to be bobbing quite a bit.
Did see a number of CHP on the way up. Mostly on the opposite side. The are really sneaky, hiding behind trees so they are impossible to see until you pass them.
As mentioned before, anyone coming here for the first time...take that last 12 mile descent SLOWLY.
Look forward to seeing everyone soon. I see a few yakkers setting up their camps across the grass.
-
packed and ready to go. Don't think I will be sleeping tonight :smt002

Wow! Was looking out the hotel window and suddenly the fog descended and I literally couldn't make out the shore right in front of. Sure don't want to be close to any reefs when it comes up like that.

I think I have everything ready for the trip. Just waiting for the kids to get out of
school so we can headout. I'm hoping to get there by 8:30pm but you all know how that is going to be. Perhaps 10:00pm or 11:00pm. :smt003 See you all there
and drive safe everyone. Watch out for the sneaky CHP. I think kayaks on top of
cars and trucks are eye candy for them. :smt005

Cant wait. We are heading up in an hour or so. Does anyone know all the regs for China cod, etc? There are some size limits for species besides Cabbies, greens and lings.

I'll be there with the regs book in hand. Those are the only ones in the rockfish category I can think of that have size limits, but there's more you need to know. Species with zero take allowed etc.. I'm sure you can find someone with a regs book for you to borrow for a bit. I'd also bet there will be someone on your team that can help you out. I'll be glad to help if you can find me. I'm not sure where which site we're in since I didn't make the arrangements.
