Thanks for your patience everyone. It's going to be another great year of fishing. Trinidad Rockfishing has been RED HOT since opener! Sign up now. Don't put it off. Cut off is September 5th.
REMEMBER - Even if you sign up and can't make it, you still get the goodie bag and t-shirt. You have nothing to loose if you sign up sooner rather than later.
Thanks everyone!

Sweet! Great job on tourney, don't change a thing.

Is it September yet. :headbang:

TRW4 was awesome! I really enjoyed the team format, and I hope you guys keep that going for TRW5. Prize packages were amazing, as was the potluck and the atmosphere in general.
I guess my only suggestion would be to include a few of the other rockfish species in the scoring. I saw some really nice browns, coppers, and grassies caught on tourney day that were ineligible for points. At the very least, maybe have an "Other Rockfish" category to include these species for points?
Looking forward to participating in TRW5!
-
Aaron you did an awesome job!
Great Location, Great Campground (Ewoke village) and awards, Great prizes, Great T-shirt and Great company. I felt the event was ran very professionally and sponsors were well represented. Over all a great team event!
The only thing I would address is the campgrounds fish cleaning station needs to be better prepared with more trash cans and bags.
Besides that, don't change a thing! Looking forward to Trinidad Rockfish Wars V.
Mike
-
Agree with the 'other' category addition, otherwise don't change a thing! :smt003
-
I had an AWESOME good time at TRW4!!
I'd have to agree with the "other" category (although catching the 3rd species proved to be a real bitch :smt001 )
Can't wait to do it again!!!!!
-
Liking the feedback on "other rockfish". Any other ideas?
-
I liked it the way it was.
-
I think Rob and Adam should have to use Barbie Poles with the way they kick my butt every year and my brother and I should get senior citizens bonus points for just showing up. LOL...Overall love the team format, great competition, and the great prizes.

Build in a handicap for for teams... :) only for you Jacks!
-
Since so many teams had trouble getting the third species and ended up posting a zero on the board, how about removing that requirement and adding in some sort of bonus for turning in multiple species?
-
Whatever you want to do is fine. I just like fishing up there.
-
I really liked the three species requirement and the fact that it was hard to achieve. It adds a whole extra level of strategy to the tourney. We had a great time will definitely be back

+1 on the cleaning station issue,
" other species " might be nice even though we failed to get our 3rd species, it just forces me to learn more and fish outside the box. :smt002

Lost Coast Rootbeer keg for the kids was nice the time that was done.

There was no requirement to catch 3 species. If you wanted to turn in the 6th fish it had to be the 3rd specie. It could have easily been won with 5 fish if one was a halibut.
-
The rule was you had to turn in three species to have any fish count. Pretty sure that is what it was.
-
Mmm nope, but you pretty much had no chance of winning without it. If that was the rule and no one caught 3 species then no fish would be weighed in. The rule said you can turn in 6 fish that consisted of at least 3 species.
-
...sounds confusing
-
The way I interpreted the rules you had to have 3 of the scorable species in order to qualify. We had 4 species, but 2 were not on the list so we didn't weigh in.
-
Echoing Racin and Ben: from what I recall, you had to have at least 3 of the eligible species to qualify for the weigh-in. I'm pretty sure this was asked at the pre-tourney gathering at Pacific Outfitters the day prior to the tournament. I even remember one team being turned away from weigh-in table because they only had two species.
Personally, I really enjoyed the 3-species requirement. Combined with the 2-person teams, it opened up all sorts of possibilities for strategies. Way more fun than everyone just vying to catch the biggest lingcod.

+1 I also like the format we had 4 species 1 did not count, next year Copper fish should count LOL. I caught my PB Copper that day!!!!

This.
In the spirit of not changing anything, Rob and I will try our hardest to make sure the same team wins next year. :smt003 :smt006

Where is that damn like button?
-
I wasn't at the pre-tourney gathering so I guess I may have interpreted the rule wrong. That would definitely have me rethink my strategy some, but I would have still went out for a halibut after quickly catching one the day before that would have scored good. We may be lucky to even have a halibut season in September next year.
-
Just reserved my campsite. :headbang:

I may have to get in on this one this year...no matter the format, Lips Will Be Ripped!

Under 4 months away if its going to be on Sept.12
Any updates on this tournament if its going to happen or not ?
-
Late to the discussion but if it helps at this late stage....
From last years 2014 entry form.
-
With the increased bag limit on lings and decreased bag limit on black rockfish, are the tournament organizers considering any changes to the scoring format for 2015? Will there be a "miscellaneous rockfish" category to capture some of those awesome coppers and grass rockfish we saw last year?
-
With the increased bag limit on lings and decreased bag limit on black rockfish, are the tournament organizers considering any changes to the scoring format for 2015?
Good question. I think that maybe they should look at this again. Especially the numbers for Blacks and Blues, 8ppi for each. That's doesn't seem right. We all know Trindad has some big black rockfish: 18" - 19" for a good fish. Very doubtful anyone's going to catch a 19" blue rockfish new CA state record. What, the average big blue is like 15" - 16" if that. They should just remove it all together if that's the case and add copper at the same 8ppi. 2cents
-
It's a great location and fun tournament. If the date stays the same ill work hospital visits around it. Someone from pac out will log on and give an update eventually...
-
Love the extra challenge of the 3 species requirement.
-
It's a great location and fun tournament.
+1. I had a blast at last year's TRW. Regardless of potential changes to the scoring system, the two things that make this format so awesome IMO are the team scoring and the multi-species requirements. I was also very impressed with how the tourney was run--very professional with a lot of enthusiasm. I definitely plan on attending this year.
I usually get pretty stoked when I'm fishing with my brother and he catches a nice fish, but at TRW that stoke goes to another level because it's all about the TEAM score and not the individual. Seeing him haul up a 25 inch cabezon and 37 inch ling back-to-back on tourney day was awesome :smt003.
-
Liked event. Great location. Noticed that no one was answering radio all day. No chatter, no reports etc- Had right channel. A little dangerous if someone goes in the water. Remember- safety first.
-
68 or 69? People were in both all day.
-

Trinidad is 78 but lots of traffic was on 69.

Any updates? I'd really like to see salmon on the list this year.

Glad to see everyone's stoked about the new changes. So...what the strategy for this year? I'm interested to hear people's feedback.

Brandi and I are in for Humboldt Hookers, looking to crack the top 10 after just missing last year. I'll also work on not getting beat on my cabby by 1/4" by the Mayes brothers again.
Great rules changes, the format is just about perfect now.

Hi all, :smt006
I feel like a kid before Christmas...all spun about whats to come :smt003
Anyway I'm local in Trinidad (well Westhaven actually but at least i can afford the PO Box :smt002) so if any out-of-townees find you need anything just holler and I'll do what I can. I will have a bunch of chunk-wood from last seasons fall in my truck so if anyone needs just look for the Starburst Kraken and say hello :smt003
I'm noticeably shy but respond well to a wave :smt006
Cheers and safe travels

Quick report of TRWV...
Team Big Hammer takes 1st place!
-
Thanks to Pacific Outfitters for another great TRW and Lowrance, Branson Baits, Beacon Rods and all of the other sponsors. This is such a fun tournament, with lots of big fish caught.
For me rock fishing at Trinidad once again humbled me. My fish count for the day was 6 blacks, 3 lings, 1 under sized cab, 1 spiny dog, and 1 starfish. My brother had a hard time keeping fish on the hook and after six hours had one fish, which did turn out to be our highest scoring fish.
And congrats to team Big Hammer with their impressive stringer.
-
Great event! I really like fishing Trinidad although she didn't produce for me this year, I had a blast. Congrats Rob and David on the win!
Did any happen to find/ pickup a Fisherman's Solution fillet knife sheath at the fillet tables? It is black with a stone and grippers built in. I went back to my kayak to grab a few more fish and when I got back to the table it was gone. :smt012
Also missing a Scotty rod holder w/ extension.
Mike

Awesome event, good fishing, great tourney. Did anyone get a picture of the scoreboard they could post. I had to take off before they posted the scores but just wanted to see how everybody did. Great weekend already looking forward to next year. Thanks
-
Cool people, good food and badass fish. I love fishing Trinidad and am blessed to live 20 minutes away.
Rf bite was insane. Black rf were mostly 18-20". Too many to count. Fisheducator got a 23". Biggest of the day!
I landed my first fish on the handline ever. 19" black on smelt I netted from humboldt bay. Probably caught a dozen of em before I moved on. They were just gobbling up the smelt!
Congratulations to Rob and David on the win. It's great competing against badass fishermen like you guys! Same with everyone out there. Great group of fisherman!
-
Another awesome TRW event this year! We lucked out with that weather window on tourney day. The fishing was some of the better rockfishing I've seen in Trinidad, with a LOT of awesome fish weighed in. Congrats to Tigerfish and Matanaska on clinching the win, you guys are rockfish slayers!
MattSwayze and I (the aMayesing Brothers) clinched 3rd place for the second year in a row! We were stoked to place two years in a row. I'd done a little pre-fishing the day before with Matanaska, but on tourney day we explored some new-to-us reefs and pulled up some really nice fish. I quickly stuck a few nice kelp greenling in the shallows, and after that we focused on the deeper 50-100 foot depths for rockfish and lings. Given that my freezer was all but devoid of rockfish and I live 5 hours from the coast, I did a good amount of harvesting on tourney day. Gotta make those coast trips count before winter!

Big thanks to Aaron and all the guys at Pacific Outfitters for putting together another awesome event, and Mike/Lowrance for hooking it up with the Elite 5 fishfinders/chart plotters! I hope to test mine out on Lake Almanor soon.
-
Nice fish Chris. Is the bronze looking one a copper? I caught a pretty nice one of those but it didn't quite look like the copper on my id chart. I thought the coppers maybe had some greenish splotches?

Thanks! It's a brown rockfish. The key ID feature with coppers is the posterior half of the lateral line will be light colored. No greenish splotches. The fish in the photo below is a copper.

Here is a few more of you trying to put the WWF moves on it. It was funny to watch.
Chris and Matt with their 3rd place repeat bounty. Nice!
I also wanted to give a shout out to Mike AKA Saw. Mike is such a cool dude. He offered his truck to myself and Gary's so we could get our yaks down to the beach and back to the campground. Mike doesn't know us from squat, but offered his 50K diesel anyway. He also let us use his RV site to wash all our gear. That's some NCKA love right there!
Looking forward to seeing you at the next event Mike. I'll have a cold one ready bro.
