Lets make a date so you can come down and practice with me before the derby!

Also, try to team up with one of the local ncka guys for derby day.  A lot depends on 'shere you fish' and that changes day to day.

If you plan to go out anytime on a weekend before the derby just PM me, I'm totally down and my brother is too. Striper or perch I'm good with either just want to kill a 2 year shore fishing skunk...  :smt013

I'm stoked to catch some massive small fish and perhaps be given some tips on how to properly cook paksiw na isda. The last time I tried the fish tasted decent but was a bit mushy. :smt012

I dont eat them often, but my best recipe is thin filets, ritz cracker or panko bread crumb, with an egg and flour beer batter... flash fry theyre pretty good, but nothing like rockfish or ling for that matter...

You have my number, feel free to contact me anytime if you want to go. As Bushy said, theyre more of a "location" or "spot" fish. As for your striper hopes, this time of the year is rather slow, but they are still out there, got two the other day perch fishing and saw another 3 caught before this last storm.

Let me know if you want to go! This year I may aim for an opal eye.... Never caught one, but i'd imagine theyd put up quite a battle!

Opal eye is not a perch (though it looks like one).  So, they can't place in the Derby.

You should've waited until tourney day to disclose that.

Already signed up!  Had a blast last year despite not so great conditions.  Stoked for it again this year!

Looking forward to catching monster small fish.

What's a good setup?  Farther south, I used carolina-rigged sand crabs or gulp worms.  Does that work in Santa Cruz?
