GREAT NEWS.  Jims friend  is in the process of setting up Cedros trips. Fully guided. Fly into Cedros, lodge on the island, and includes fully rigged Hobie Outbacks. As soon as I get the full details I will post here.

With these guys?

Is that because you want to kayak the river, or because you want to kayak with those women?

The Excel has open spots for 3, 5, 7, and 8 day trips in June, with the 8-day'er being sponsored by Phenix Rods.

I think "those women" are more worthy than I am at this stage in my life so.. I tip my hat to them for their noble effort! :smt006

Now another Islander trip is another matter, and I can muster for the 2.5 day trip!

...but in case that doesn't happen?, there is also this possibility;

Yeah, so the skinny on Islander I get is this:  owner says he has been uderpricing drastically for years.  une is typically a slow monthfor the boat, and others advised me he also ran yak trips to "keep" his deckhands.  He charges a lot more for his shark trips (but they have to tavel), and charges more for his regular fishing tripsthough individual pricing maybe less due to increased # of anglers they can take for fishing off the boat only.

He cites 30% of his exterior maintenance costs come from the few yak trips they have been running.  Rack need to be rebuilt, they lost an engine last year (puzzling why he included that cost in explanation, considering one of his deckhands dropped the motor off the back of the Zodiac.  "did you attach the safety Line?.......Uh, No.")

Third party hinted to me the deckhand "Don't Like" to do yak trips.  Too hard.  (I seem to remember them as loving us, and loving the fact they had hours and hours to actually fish while we were all out yakfishing).

John is a great guy, and it's a great boat.  But, for this year we are going to decline booking a June trip.  There are a couple other possibilities we're looking into, including boats embarking from Santa Barbara or Oxnard. fising the Main Channel Islands.  That means 1/2 the drive and no LA trafffic.

Great times and great memories, and more good times ahead.  Promise.

I don't believe he was blaming kayakers for the loss of the outboard engine, probably referring to the expense of replacement. They probably don't use the outboard for fishing-from-boat trips.

Other than raising or lowering kayaks and filling bait tubes, the crew spent a lot of time just lounging against the back rail or fishing.

And, as one who just went for a boat ride, I left a very good tip even though I did not think the meals were that great. Only thing I regret is taking a nap during the time Kiel reeled in the black sea bass.

I would have considered another boat ride, at the previous prices, for another photo encounter with the Navy gunboats.  :smt004

I'm going on an 8 day trip this year, then.

Either on the Excel or Royal Polaris.

If the Islander would've raised their prices by 25% for the next year or two I woulda been all good with that, but to increase prices by 50% in one season is insane.

I was talking to Captain/owner John last year on our 3-day trip and even though he denied it, you could tell that he was kind of over the whole kayak mothership thing. I'm wondering if it's because Shane was bought out and Jason bailed, so now John is left as the main captain for all these trips.
