After a couple months of asking the top 5 in both AOTY and DOTY about where and when to hold this year's Award ceremony and not coming to any great consensus I have come up with the following date and location that I hope will work for those people that WANT to come and celebrate the winners and competitors of this years AOTY and DOTY.

Date: 2/7/14
Location: Timber Cove Beach, Sonoma County

Here are the pros and cons of this location as I see it:

Pros:
-North of SF. Important for folks who want to come and live in Humboldt.
-Still possible day trip distance for Monterey/SJ/Sac area folks
-Pretty beach area to chill and for family
-Can do whatever we want on beach:cook, drink, chill, bonfire, potluck, kegs, play music, camp etc without a group permit
-Divers can dive and harvest uni and fish and ocean goodies (octopus and scallops if lucky) to share with anglers
-Anglers can either target sea perch from kayak (high value AOTY species), drop crab trabs offshore, or shore fish from rocks in TC or anyhwere North/South
-Mushroom hunters can explore Salt Point state park just to the North
-Timber Cove lodge next door has fancy restaurant and bar for wives/SOs
-If bad weather could still set up tarps/canopies and do awards under them against cliff/between cars etc
-Bathroom facilities at top of hill, and porta potty on beach
-Fish/uni cleaning station at beach
-Even if don't fish or dive is cool spot to chill and spend a day at the beach or just paddle and explore coast, or practice self rescue in cove.  :smt003

Cons:
-Anglers can only target perch from kayak
-Brenda charges per person for day use
-Very limited parking down by beach, but plenty of parking up top and along HWY 1 and short walk down to water.
-??

Some of the factors that were considered in trying to decide a venue included:

-Fishing opportunities during Jan/Feb
-Diving opportunities during Jan/Feb
-Access during Jan/Feb
-$$ (we have no budget for a permit or group site etc)
-Location. We have players from ALL over so any location will be a drive for some
-Aesthetics. Dirt parking lot vs somewhere pretty with water.

Really hope people who care about AOTY and DOTY are cool with this choice.

If anyone (either on the AOTY/DOTY committe or not) wants to take on planning and coordinating the awards ceremony for next year please let me know.  :smt002

 :smt006

Sincerely,

Jim

This is a NorCal group and this seems pretty much in the middle for many folks.

Thanks for posting so I can put on my calendar.   And thanks for all your work.

I think it is a great choice, a very pretty and fishy spot. Thanks for the thoughtful explanation of your decision process. I want to go, see you there-Amos

anchor bay is 30 min up 1 and there is a lot more room and they have a huge beach for kids.  they also have an area for a potluck/awards

also a much nicer facility

Just my 2 cents

Is it open in Feb? Ocean cove and fort Ross were also considered but they are closed during that time of year...

Thanks for the support Al!!   :smt009

But since you have made it very clear you are not a fan of AOTY, I guess I'm not surprised.

Sincerely,

Jim

Cool.  It seems to be a good "middle of NorCal" destination.  I've never been to Timber Cove so it'll be nice to see a new place.  Thanks for all that you do for AOTY Jim!

I think the middle of NorCal is about 20 miles east of Stockton.
I guess TC will have to do.  :smt044 :smt044 :smt044

Sorry Jim!  Just my opinion!  I do applaud your efforts!  But I'm not going to day trip up to TC, which means camping, which means at least $100 (usually more) in food, gas and lodging.  So if RF was open at least I could go up and fish.  But as it stands, targeting perch by kayak is not my game.  But it is a good idea for those wishing to get an Ocean fish for AOTY to go for it!  And it's likely going to be a great diving hookup too!  I hope you guys have an awesome time and take lots of pics!

If I can get my truck fixed, I'll be there (I'd be shocked if I don't get it fixed by then).

Hojoman, I'd be happy to make the delivery. I'm up in Fremont frequently for work (based in Dublin). We can work out the transportation sometime January after things settle down with the holidays. Unless you find someone else to make the delivery!

I mostly just want to check out Timber Cove for myself for the first time, and hopefully some others will be fishing for perch too so I can tag along and check the place out! Been wanting to try fishing there for a long time!
Thresher in avatar and Soupfin Shark in signature both caught and pic taken by me.

30th place / 1132.25 pts / 7 Species - AOTY 2015 (moving up a little!)

Always looking for new people to fish with!
