You can bring and use your paddleboard, you just won't be able to compete. All crabs must be caught from a kayak. Hope to see you there.

Here are the rules from page 1:

Rules:

Maximum 4 Traps/Rings per person.
No overnight soaks.
Kayaks only. No Motors or Sails Allowed.

There is a gathering every night!!  We "NCKA" have every site in the jetty area, so stop on by any site, we are all family!!  But Saturday Novofish will most likely host a uke jam session.

Victor that logo is so rad. Nice work on that for sure. I know we will want hoodies and shirts for sure.

This will be Ethan's first year joining me in the yak. Can't wait!

Is swift the paddle sponsor for this year?

Also I'm going to donate a pile of Promar Crab gear. We decided to not sell crab gear anymore, so anything thats left over after our sale I'm donating to CF.

Man, looking like it's nearly fully booked for that weekend at the campground.  All full at the Jetty, one left in the cove camp, a few in the gull camp.

Any idea about the typical availability of the non-reserveable walk-up only sites, and/or anybody backing out that wants to cede their reservation?

Hoping to get there with my wife for our first CrabFest!

Thanks,

Ron

If you're aiming for a walk-up site, get there EARLY on that Friday. That's still not a guarantee you'll get one though. Its usually harder to do in the summer (walk-up sites are usually filled by 9am on Fridays in the summer), but its going to be a busy weekend at Doran. Usually, the fewer the reservable sites available on any given weekend, the harder its going to be to get a walk up site. I've tried to get a walk up four times and have only succeeded once. You can also try Westside or Bodega Dunes if you just need a place to crash and don't mind doing the day use thing at Doran. Good luck.

Thanks for the input, much appreciated!  Will likely take one of the further-out sites, or maybe one of the walk-in tent sites; those seem to be mostly available, and while not ideal, that's how I roll. I think.

Just a reminder when booking a site. If you do not book Sunday you will need to move by checkout time, It would be best to book Sunday night to not have to worry about moving during the event.

The Jetty day use does not open until sunrise. You are able to pay at the iron ranger and drive to the gate at the Jetty Day use.

Don't worry traildad.  You'll have plenty of time.  Be at the gate early to get a good parking spot and you can get other things prepped while you are waiting.  I think the rangers open the gate a little earlier than the posted time.

I'm pretty slow getting ready. I suppose I could park at the gate and get ready while I wait. As I recall the launch is an easy wheel from the gate. I just noticed that the incomming tide doesn't start till around 10:00. Maybe there isn't a need to be out at first light. Is the crabbing good on the outgoing tide?

A few "day trip only" guys got there kinda early, parked right in front of the gate to the "Day Use" parking and rigged there kayaks; then brought them down to the beach, even before the gate opened. Then all they had to do when the gate opened, is grab a parking space and register...

Shoot, just car camp in the line to the Day Use area  :smt044  :smt005

Once again Eddyline has come through  to support Crabfest in a big way. Eddyline has been a sponsor of Crabfest since day one. This year they are donating a galaxy blue Eddyline Caribbean 12.

Please "like" them on facebook at: www.facebook.com/eddylinekayaks and their fishing page at www.facebook.com/eddylinefishing

Or visit them online at www.eddyline.com/

One lucky participant will be taking this kayak home with them.

Hey Victor - I know this isn't a real cool fishing rod or an Eddyline, or even an awesome ukulele, but if it might help raise a few bucks - I will bake, frost and donate a two-layer version of my carrot cake for someone to enjoy all to themselves :-). They wouldn't even have to share! hehe.
I will even throw-in the cake carrier!

There might be a conflict of interest considering who we are fundraising for and it being a rather sweet and decadent dessert....if that is the case, let me know and I'll forget about the idea. But I thought I would put the offer out there.

I should have cupcakes for the little ones as well.

This means we need to be on our best behavior!
Although I thought about the rule about hanging signs on trees (there arent many trees at camp sites to begin with) was funny.
Im glad we have most of, if not all of the jetty spaces....I wonder if they realize this?
The rule about no more than 8 at any one camp site at any one time is going to make our uke playing difficult....

And just a reminder that the park employees absolutely HATE discarded zip ties and zip tie pieces. They are impossible to pick up with the "garbage tongs". Please make every effort to dispose of your zip ties properly!!

Last year the rangers felt that too many people were hanging out at the campsites.

If you treat the campground like your own mothers house, we won't have any problems.

I was raised that you should always think that your mom is watching or listening to what you have to say.

I think the rule of 8 is really directed at drunken loud partying that would invade the privacy and comfort of other campers.  I don't think our group is going to bother anyone, especially considering the fact that nearly all of the campers will be part of our group.

I will be heading out in the morning, here are a few reminders about the weekend. If you have any questions I will keep an eye on this thread.

1) If you are just coming out for the day make sure you pay the day use fee. If you are there before the ranger please use the iron ranger to deposit your fee.

2) I will be moving my truck to the front of the line Sunday morning and will be securing 4 of the parking spaces that back into the beach. Please keep this in mind if I ask you to not park in a spot that morning.

3) Remember 4 pots/rings per per person, no overnight soaks, and you must register in the morning prior to going out to drop your gear.

4) Please Print a waiver out ahead of time. I will have extra if you forget.

5) This is a potluck, please bring something to share with your NCKA family and don't forget the host  :smt006
Bring reusable plates, the less amount of garbage the less we have to clean after the event, plus it's good for the environment.

6) The day of the event if you are not camping and just there for the day please do not hang out in the campground.

7) If I forget your name the day of the event, please remind me. With so much going on that day I tend to draw a blank on names.  :smt001

8) Have fun!

Just a  note I talked with a state park ranger (Doran is County) yesterday while he was watching surfers... in his words " DFW is looking to write people up"

A ranger came and checked crab last year. In the end he said we were a great group and that everyone was playing by the rules.

Blowdega strikes again!

Seriously.  I was roused from slumber at about 3:30 in the morning by the side of my tent smacking me in the noggin:

Ended up staying another night all the same, happily the park staff were very accommodating about us relocating to a more sheltered site.  Time to deck out the interior of the previa with a bed, I suspect.

Still, a great time, even though Sara and I didn't bother to get out on the water, but were able to do some surfcasting; only one legal crab, but some fun by-catch of a baby leopard shark and a perch in the snares (both released).

Saturday you couldn't fly a kite, there was just no wind.  Sunday, you couldn't fly a kite, it was blowing at least 25mph steady coming on shore.  I've never seen it that rough.  I was going to launch off the back side, until I watched the channel markers.  The wind and waves were throwing a spray 15' or more off the wood pilings just behind the coast guard station, so I made the decision to not go out.  A couple local boys did and got some sizable dungies but by that time, around noon, then wind had tapered off just a little.  By pot luck time, it was manageable for feeding and by awards time, not too bad!

I think it was 8 crabs turned in for the dungies all total.  Anyone who headed out deserved some trophy though!  Ha!

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU to Victor and his bride as well as Dan and all the sponsors who came together to make this the best crabfest I've attended (3 years running).  Seems folks were even more friendly than ever, food was out of this world, prizes and awards were over the top.

got to meet new folks and others I only get to see once or twice a year.

My personal best rock crab;
