Hello all,

Just wanted to check and see if anyone had any advice on decent turkey hunting areas on public land?
I have to take a week off at the end of March due to our new company vacation accrual policy and it just so happens that I'll cap about the same time as the first week of turkey season.
I have a week so pretty much anywhere in CA is within range.

Anyway any input would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Mike

I know that spot, it's called "Turkey Paradise"  :smt003

Very nice.
I could hunt at my brother's upholstery shop in Folsom also, he had several walk into the shop the ohter day.

I've gotta get out of the bay area.

I leaning toward the Lake Shasta area. I hear the hunting is good and I'd like to take the yak along for the ride.

MikeV,
Most turkey hunting spots are `spoken for' and can be hard to come by.  You can get maps from BLM for $4 or $6 bucks each which shows where the BLM land is, which is open for public use/hunting.
Here is the link below.  You call them, tell them which maps you want and give them a cc and they send them out right away.  The maps aren't perfect, some are old but it gives you somewhere to start.  I have been successful on Blm land around Mariposa and Don Pedro. Good luck

Lot of birds up here in the Tehama/Shasta County areas.  Private property access really makes things easier, but there are some good chances of scoring a bird on some of the BLM property west of Redding, or as you mentioned the national forest land up around Shasta Lake.  The Pit arm/Jones Valley area seem to hold more birds.  The area got nuked by a huge fire a few years ago, so get in there early, focus on the edges of the burn and use your ears.  Another option is off of the Sac River in Tehama County.  Same tactic, launch in the dark and float until you hear birds.  Not for the faint of heart if you don't know the river, but it's a lot of fun.

Okay, this is no answer to your question, but I had these visitors to my house in Scotts Valley earlier in the week.

Coolness!
Always willing to join others in the Monterey/Santa Cruz/Half Moon Bay area for a bit of fishing...feel free to contact me.

I love it when they stack up on top of each other like that last pic, helps to save ammo by dusting two with one shot!

"Dusting" two with one shot would save ammo. Of course the resulting citation would have easily bought another box of shells. Plus the possible loss of hunting license and shotgun makes that something to avoid.

Thanks for all of the input folks.
I think it's going to be the south end of Shasta Nat. Forest to start the week.
I won't have any internet until I get back but hopefully I'll have some solid hunting and fish porn to share when I get back.
