Salmon fishing

Salmon are on the chomp,I highly recommend anyone who salmon fishes to hop on this occasion,the bites ego down at pacifica,moss beach area in 200 feet of water.

I'd jump on a charter and call it a day without lugging the yak and gear for some chrome. Most boats are getting limits in an hour or two for 20 people. Back at the dock before noon.

Oh Sh*t, must be on the wrong forum. 

I guess if you want to pay $150 for two salmon and not have a lot of fun doing it charters are the way to go. I prefer to paddle/pedal, take in the scenery, not smell diesel, challenge my self a bit, put one in the tankwell, and CNR a few more before keeping my second when the bite is hot, but that is just me. I am sure no one else here feels the same way.

I do enjoy a day on a party boat now and then when the fish are out of range or the weather sucks. It can be a lot of fun if you end up with a good group. It still doesn't compare to the huge challenge and reward of catching salmon from a kayak.

Anybody considering heading out this weekend?  I bought a new (used) Hobie Revo and have been itching to take it out...I am an experienced fisherman, just not from a kayak in the ocean  .

Unfortunately I can't fish this weekend. Maybe next.

I'm sure there will be at least a few guys fishing at Half Moon Bay (HMB) this weekend.

Do you have the bare necessities for ocean kayaking? Wetsuit (or drysuit), PFD, and handheld VHF radio?

Standard Horizon, any floating model and would get the most that you can afford.  I wouldn't go out on the ocean without one. 

Icomm and Standard Horizon are both good brands. I personally use Icomm.

I personally chose a model that doesn't float (Icomm M73). It's less bulky than the floating models and it has a longer battery life. (They make them float by shaving battery weight and increasing the size of the housing until it's less dense than water.) I also have a floating Icomm that I use as a spare/loaner. It's a good radio, I just don't like the bulkiness.

Whether you choose a floating model or not, it should be leashed to your PFD (not to your kayak - in case you get separated). The leash pretty much negates the need for a floating radio. It ain't going anywhere.

Definitely avoid West Marine brand radios. I had several of those fail on me before I switched to Icomm. They were all replaced under warrantee, but I can't be confident in a piece of essential safety gear that's already proven itself to be unreliable...
