General Talk / USA vs Japan Grudge Match FIFA 2015 Final
« on: July 02, 2015, 11:35:40 AM »
Well the tsunami inspired Japanese team beat USA 4 years ago. Now it's time for some revenge. Wambach isn't the force she used to be but it is the 4th of July weekend, we have the home team advantage and not too many injuries. Let's go USA.

I had an open house yesterday and Molly and I had to be out of the house for 4 hours. Headed over to Shadow Cliffs for some exercise. By 4:30 PM it was blowing 10-15kt with 1 foot short periodicity white caps. Molly was giving me the stink eye so decided to call it a day. On my way in, a middle-aged couple launches a rental tandem kayak from the boat rental area. They passed me and I was thinking that looks like trouble. By this time it was small boat advisory conditions and I was wondering why someone would rent a kayak under those conditions. I got back to boat house where I launched but decided to turn around and head back to make sure the couple didn’t need any help. Sure enough, they were in the water separated from the kayak which was upside down, and attempting to swim in. They weren’t making progress so I peddled over to render assistance. I was in my AI with 1 ama and no sail. I asked them if they needed help and they said yes. The wife was not a good swimmer so I asked her to hang onto the ama and I would tow her in. The husband threw a backpack onto the trampoline which weighed over 30 pounds. I asked what was in it and he said “our stuff”. They were both wearing PFD’s luckily. Got them both to shore and got a Molly escort the last few feet. That dog, any excuse to swim.  I righted the tandem and started towing it back to the boat. The lifeguard finally showed up and I chewed him out then I chewed out the boat rental guy who claimed the renter said he had kayaking experience. Actually, he seemed like an OK guy but there is a flag on Stanley and so there is no excuse for not knowing it was blowing really hard. It all ended up OK.

I know we have all seen people on the water who did not have the skills or equipment for the conditions. To tell you the honest truth, I don’t always say anything, except maybe “it’s bad out there, I wouldn’t go out”. I was fishing with Bushy a few years ago and he paddled out of his way to chew a family out for not having PFD’s. So what do you do?

Does the 2015 AI AMA fit on the older AI models? Would like a little more floatation. Tx Scott

Craftsmen's Corner / Adventure Island Gas Engine Mount
« on: December 21, 2014, 06:30:40 PM »
I am about 1/2 way through this project. Wanted to add a Suzuki 2.5 HP gas engine to my AI as a backup for those Soquel Hole chrome hunts. Decided to use one of PatR's scotty mount brackets as the primary connection. Here were the design constraints:
1. Easy to remove and install with only a screw driver
2. No holes in the hull or AKA bars
3. Minimum weight
4. Engine force applied to the strongest part of the hull.
5. Able access downrigger, plano box and fold the ama back with engine installed

I used 3/4" marine plywood and all stainless steel hardware. Going to finish with varnish over epoxy. It's been a journey and a really fun project.

Kayak Sailing / Monterey Bay 4/18/2015 Sail and Fish
« on: December 04, 2014, 02:20:53 PM »
Hold the date for this event. Solunar cycle looks very good. Tentative agenda:
6AM to 1PM: fish for big salmon and little sand dabs
1-2PM: pot luck shore lunch sand dab fry
2-3:30: Island racing around a set triangular course (MBK to Red Buoy to yellow buoy to MBK)

Again this event will be dependent on WX. Let me know if interested or have other ideas. Non-sailors and non-anglers welcome.

Life is good! Scott

Recipes / Thai Crab Fried Rice
« on: November 03, 2014, 07:45:34 PM »
I made this recipe on the opener:
http://www.thaitable.com/thai/recipe/crab-fried-rice.

It's pretty good and I used 2 jumbo dungies for the 2.5 cups of uncooked rice but you could use 3. I would double the amount of the chili fish sauce and max out the number of Thai chilis. The lime juice is optional as are the shallots. Life is good. Scott

Eddyline / Eddyline Gear Track Failure
« on: June 24, 2014, 07:26:19 AM »
Was bottom trolling at Capitola last weekend with a rod in the forward rod holder and hooked a shark. The gear track popped off on the takedown and I almost lost a $400 rod/reel combo. As it turns out, the tracks are only glued in. Any thoughts about bolting them on?

Craftsmen's Corner / Gen 2 Kayak Spectra Downrigger
« on: May 06, 2014, 07:40:47 PM »
I broke the Lamiglas Inshore Classic rod I caught my first WSB on and it has been sitting in a closet for 2 yeas. Been trolling at up to 200' with 6-8 pound lead balls and needed to increase the strength and ease of cranking of my Gen 1 Downrigger. Well it came out awesome and you can run 2 rods stacked if needed. Will post construction details if folks are interested.

CA Regulations / Do boat limits apply on mothership trips?
« on: April 02, 2014, 10:09:51 AM »
Sometimes on long range trips, a skiff is used to land giant tuna. This is in Mexican waters usually. So my question is on a kayak mother ship trip is it personal limit or boat limit.

Have been kicking around some ideas with Abking for the last few months and decided to add a fun fund raiser to GS8 to benefit Heroes on the Water (HOW) and Pay it Forward (PIF). Instead of the usual lottery, we decided to try a silent auction format. The auction will occur at the event. If you have items to donate to the auction, send me a PM. We are requesting that the minimum retail value of the donated items to be $50. 100% of proceeds will go to HOW and PIF.

Heroes on the Water: Helps our Nation’s warriors and veterans from all branches of the United States military unwind using the therapeutic qualities of fishing from kayaks. What looks like a day trip of paddling and fishing is in fact something much deeper and long-lasting. http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?board=46.0

Pay it Forward: Helps fellow kayakers who are battling cancer and supports cancer awareness. It began in 2010 as a grass roots effort to support a fellow kayak angler, Joel Lotilla (Mooch) who was battling metastatic cancer. Joel lost his battle with cancer in 2013 but his spirit and PIF live on. http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?board=43.0

Thanks! Scott

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Kokatat SuperNova Angler Paddling Suit
« on: January 28, 2014, 06:48:54 PM »
Well there are a few things that make a huge difference in making kayak fishing easier, more comfortable and safer.
1. Seat
2. Paddle
3. PFD
4. Immersion suit

I used a neoprene farmer john with dry top and neoprene booties for my first 5 seasons saltwater kayak fishing in NCAL and it worked fine with only a few times where being cold ended a trip. Then I went to Gimmie Shelter 5 and fished for hours in the rain and was close to hypothermia by noon. When I got home, I decided to buy a paddle suit and ended up with a Kokatat SuperNova Angler Paddling Suit because Craig recommended it. I think there were at least a dozen people who got the same suit after GS5, and we can be recognized by the blue color which is no longer offered. From June 2011 to December 2013 I wore over 100 times on the ocean and have never been cold. It is so much more comfortable than a wet suit also. As far as how they do if you capsize and have to swim, I had 5 minute swim in the surf zone in 2011 and it did fine. One thing I noticed is that even though a paddle suit leaks a little around the neck a little, a cup or 2 of water in the suit does not make you cold. In 2011, I got waked heading out of the jaws at Moss Landing on a ghost hunt. I self-rescued and paddled out to the Pajaro and fished all day. When I got back to shore and took the suit off there was a cup of water in each foot and yet I was never cold. In a FJ/dry top, I wouldn't have made it to the Pajaro. So for what we do, I think a paddle suit works fine and you don't need a dry suit as long as you are wearing proper clothes underneath the suit.

I really loved my paddle suit but in December the cuffs tore and I noticed after a short swim it leaked more water than usual. I will admit that I admit I am not good at putting the 303 lubricant on the cuffs regularly. I sent the suit to Kokatat to have a new collar and cuffs installed  and have it tested for leaks. A week later I got a call from Kokatat and they told me the material on the  back area had delaminated and couldn't be repaired so they sent me a new suit. I was kind of bummed that I wouldn't get my old suit back because it had really good juju and the new suit is no longer made in blue. Ended up getting a new suit mango colored. Anyway, Kokatat is a great company and their customer service is excellent and I don't think the fabric delamination reflects on the overall quality of the product. Kayak fishing is extremely hard on clothing and equipment. Made in Arcata, CA too. If you do have the GS5 edition of the suit you may want to check it for leaks.

Hobie Kayaks / DIY Stainless Steel Mirage Drive Pedal Shafts
« on: January 12, 2014, 07:03:16 PM »
Well I kind of blew off this thread http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=45160.msg504715#msg504715 but when Etienne told me he broke a pedal shaft in less than 1 year and Keith said he also broke one, I did some research. What I found was that this is a problem with the hollow pedal shaft V2 Mirage drive. The V1 Mirage drive had a solid aluminum pedal shaft and had almost no failures. You can still buy the V1 pedal shafts but you will be in $60 for a pair and they are aluminum. I go way offshore and it would be a nightmare to have the wind die and have a Mirage drive failure. I bought some stainless steel tubing from online metals for about $10 and $40 in drill bits and now have stainless steel pedal shafts which I have complete confidence in. I was talking to Chuck at at the ISE and he said "no big deal, just drill some holes"  :smt005 :smt005, actually with a hand held drill it was a bitch and took me 5 hours to complete the project.  :smt013 :smt013 For the other saltwater big game hunters, this is something you want to do. It is not corrosion, it is metal fatigue. Your pedal shafts will fail, it is only a matter of time.
