My uncle sent me this photo.  He tried to convince me that he caught this Northern Pike in Canada and wanted to know if it was legal when he gaff it.  Turns out it was a photo of a world record pike caught in the late 1990s in Germany (I think).

Anyway, it's a pretty cool photo.  The small pike was about 8 lbs and the larger one was 55 lbs.  God I miss pike fishing!

Don't say things like that around Lake Davis.   :smt009

That picture itself should be enough to explain why California doesn't need pike in it's waters, that could easily be a trout or salmon.  However, I grew up in Upstate New York where Northern Pike are native so please excuse my yearning (just not in California).

Ya sure... don't ya know... that's a BFP  (Big Friggin Pike)... although I never called them "pike" back home... they were "northerns".

I miss the northerns too... but I don't so much miss the climate.

Eric, don't you miss the ice fishing?  I went back to Wisconsin this winter and was only able to watch my family on their way out.  I might get back for bass, walleye and northern fishing this summer

I miss ice fishing.  Where my parents live in Upstate New York we used to be able to ice fish consistently from mid-December to mid-March.  In the last 10 years or so we've seen that time frame shrink.  This past year there wasn't any ice until late Jan and it only lasted about a month.  My mid-winter trips home that last couple years have found me there during a thaw and I haven't been able to get out.

I'll make it home for smallmouth fishing this June.

Yeah, I miss the ice fishing and the muskies.  I just don't miss that super cold 20, 30, 40 below zero stuff that we'd get in Northern WI / Northern MN.  I usually get a little bit of walleye/crappie/bass/northern fishing in when we go back home in the summers.

In WI, you can have three lines per person, so ice fishing is a kick if you have a bunch of guys with tip ups.  Had fun stringing tip up's all over the place and watching for the flag.  Good northern fishing through the ice up there.  Used to haul in some nice ones.

ice fishing and wondered "WHY"

Probably for many of the same reasons you kayak fish.

1.) Mobility...Unlike shore fishing in the summer, you can get to anywhere in the lake
2.) Cost...You don't need an expensive boat and can use a minimalist approach
3.) Lots of cool gear... augers, flashers (fish finders), live bait containers, tip ups, things to keep warm..

Brian....you of all people, should know me by now :smt011.....even the mooch has limits when it comes to fishing.....besides fishing for Dinos during the winter storms at the Bay, Ice-Fishing is something I'll avoid by all means......IMO: there's just something not right about sitting on ice waiting for something to happen  :smt003...besides Global Warming.....geez, I hope Scott Thornley does not read this post or we'll have another 8 pages of Hi-jacking  :smt044

Ice fishing = the same kind of action as jigging for rockfish, dropshotting, mooching. I'd go for it no problem.

As for starting up a conversation regarding AFGW, you need to go out and get some better bait Mr Mooch.

Regards,
Scott

I grew up in the midwest (IN) and did a fair amount of pike fishing in Saskatchewan and Ontario.  I love the ferociousness of pike -- they do remind me of lings (ok, lings remind me of pike).

Had a similar hitchhiking experience where my Dad had a lake trout on, and as it broke the surface, a big ol' pike came up gnashing its narly teeth and popped it off the hook.  Dad and I just looked at each other with chills going down our spines.  You know it occurs, but when the circle of life gets played out right in front of you, it is pretty sobering.

Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

A Steelhead always knows where he is going, but a Man seldom does.

I had a FW hitch hiker today!!!  I was fishing at lunch and caught this tiny bluegill...as I was pulling it in the rod loaded up and then it went limp again :smt017...I get the little bluegill almost to the bank and a 3 pound largemouth came back and INHALED the little guy.

My pile of fly line was flying off of the ground, and then off of the reel.  I eventually got my fly back but the fishy was gone. super entertaining.
