I think landing a GPO from a yak would be harder. The squid I've caught from a boat pretty much just laid there on the deck after being gaffed flashing different colors. Just make sure to avoid the beak and sharp tentacles.

Octopus seam a lot more evasive when caught.

So would you land one in your yak, on your lap. They are still active even after laying on the deck? If you do you might loose your little willie!   :smt044

I don't know about little. I can get it to 10"

I've been out of Bodega Bay specifically targeting them on the new Sea Angler a few times in the past. My advice is; when you hear that the bite is on,  drop what you're doing and go. They can leave as fast as they came. The older guys wait inside the cabin until the first 20 or so squid come aboard, Why? Because you are usually cranking squid up from 900-1200 feet at first,  but once the shoal figures that there is some feeding going on and follows the "hooked" squid to the surface, they can be had from 200' to the surface until everyone's arms are wore out. I would say that six or seven squid will feed us (four) for the year, but then again,  we all love the stuff. From a kayak? Anything is possible. I would mothership out,  wait till they were on the surface and then have at it. You'd have to remember that squid don't fight side to side,  They fight straight down, you'd need to be prepared for a potential violent straight down run(?). And they very well may absolutely blast your ass with ink and water when they breach, cause that exit tube will be pointing right at your face. Best thing to do would be to lop their head asap. The suckers have raspers that are so prefect for predation that even when dead, they can suck onto you and cut you when pulled away. The beak is fairly formidable as well. A few guys always lose a little blood for the harvest. Easy to clean though. I brought home 5 between 35-45 lbs. each last time I went. It is a blast. And watching them change color sure is trippy.
