I went Down to the fly shop in Redding recently and picked up one of there 7wt rods with one of their 6/7 reels. Got all spooled up with backing, RIO WF7F line and some 5x tapered leaders. I also picked up a spare spool with RIO Sink tip line, 250 grain I think. I'll be hitting the lake on Wednesday and can't wait to find some fish to play with. Thinking about trolling with the sinking line but not sure what fly to troll yet.  Can't wait for my trip to San Diego over Christmas, grumpies on the fly sounds like a blast.

Pick up some poppers, and head over to the local pond and practice on bass and sunfish.  Damn blast on a 5 wt.

Why did they hook you up with a 7 weight?  What did you tell them it was going to be used for.

I'm down in San Diego about 6 times a year I really want to go after some Spotted Bay Bass, Cali Halibut, corvina, calicos, ect. I know I'll wind up buying a lighter rod before too long but not before going south for 2 weeks over Christmas. And some trinity steel if I get the time to head over before that.

OK, good, a 7 weight is correct for the bay.  I go down every year to fish the bay.  I will be down their next month as a matter of fact.  I use a 7 weight with t14 and a 5 weight with an intermediate line.  Do you know any of the guys from fliflicker.com, get group of guys that I fish with down there and a ton of intel as to how the bite is.

Fly rod is addicting.   I am sure you will be adding many more to your collection.   My rods seem to reproduce overnight such that now I have an extended family of rods.   Enjoy!
