I'll post more + pics later.  Today made me realize how awesome this group is.  Eric put on a spectacular event and Tiki Lagun is probably my favorite (- Berryessa) place to fish.  The sun rise with the fishing, the comrade, and just overall awesome location left me with the soul on F(ull).  I couldn't wipe the grin off my face after I got home.

Wow what a day! I am still in shock to be the proud owner of that awesome new Ocean Kayak Trident 4.7 with a Lowrance color fisher finder and all the other wonderful stuff that came with it. Thanks so much to Fisherman Warehouse, Eric, NCKA, and all the sponsors who contributed to this.  Things have been a little rough lately but this sure has put the biggest smile on my and Logan's face ( I told him I was bringing back a new kayak for him and I guess he got his wish :smt044) I 'll make sure to test it out for a while till he can handle it himself. I couldn't believe when my name was called and still it hasn't sunk in yet..  ( ok I just got back from looking at that kayak in the garage and NOW it has sunk in   :smt007)   Thanks again this was and is a great event put on by Eric and  all the other sponsors.
Dan it was great fishing all day with you too, it was a tough couple of days fishing for me only 3 little stripers in well over 14 hours on the water( i am feeling it today for sure) Should have stayed next to the bridge and brought my wife since that seems to be the ticket to getting the stripers this weekend  :smt044. Well now I will have to bring her since she can use the X-Factor. EWB ,James and I waited all morning for that bite to start but just didn't show up. I think I will have to try that method that  Yakhopper said about ripping rattletraps fast , I guess anything at this point would be an improvement.
Wel l didn't get a lot of pictures but will try and upload the ones I had later today.  I have a couple of the goats that were hanging out at the water talking with James.  Well all in all it will be a weekend I will remember for a long time. Thanks
again everyone and look forward to seeing all on the water soon
Later
Jimbo

Congrats to Kat for smokin' the competition. My fish was a no show. ;-) In fact, all my fish were left in the delta untouched.
Way to go Jimbo on the new yak. Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.....sans Jedmo.  ;-) Thanks for the fish dish bro!
Thank you Eric for putting on such a class event. This was a great way to spend the weekend.
I did go skydiving on Saturday. Highly recommend it for anyone who has not been. Talk about a birds eye view.
Thanks Naoaki for the offer of the paddle jacket to use. I thought I forgot mine when it wasn't in my vehicle. Then when I got home and it wasn't in the fishing closet makes me think maybe it fell out of the vehicle. So if anyone finds a lighte blue(?) paddle jacket (I'm color blind) with my name in the inside tag (that should make it easier to ID), shoot me a PM.
Thanks again EVERYONE for making this a truly great event.
Oh yea, it was nice to break the news of our marriage. I figured if I wanted to spread the news I would just tell Radio Free Mooch! J/K Moochie. Love ya bro!

Congrats to the winners.  Score one, actually two, for the ladies.  You guys (ladies) get much respect from me as my best two fish combined still wouldn't have made the cut.

Thank you Eric, Sponsors, event volunteers, and participants for another memorable time.

X2  I had fun.

Had a great time.  Sarah's Mai Tai's where great.  It kept me going all day Saturday.  Ben thanks a lot for all the goodies I got from you.  Farewell my friend.  It was fun jammin with you.  Tote, congratulations.  We all heard about it from Mooch!  Hobie Dave that adobo sandwich was delicious.  How about the pork barbecue in a stick from Str8fishin! Got to get that recipe. Thanks.

Before I post the winners,
I would like to thank all of you who participated as well as all the wonderful sponsors.
Without your support this series would not have been such a huge success.
Thank You  :smt007 :smt008 :smt007
You are my inspiration.

Now the official Tiki stats;
On October 23, a total 92 anglers converged on this little part of the California Delta known as Tiki Lagun to see who would win the 2011 Striper Showdown. As always it proved to be a test of skill and strategy. New comer David "Tweak" Burrow put up a nice effort and shows his worth with a respectable 21-1/2" striper which earned him 3rd place. But alas it would prove that it was the ladies who truly ruled the water as Ashley "Miss Ash" Ratcliffe flexed her angling muscle and claimed 2nd place with a strong 23-3/4" Striper. Cementing her dominance of the water, Kathryn "Madam Kat" Huston took an early lead and never let off with her 1st place Striper of 24-3/4".

This event showed the love of the kayak community in many ways. We welcomed a total of 17 new anglers to kayaking, shared the fruits of our fortune at the pot luck, celebrated the union of a man and his new bride, raised some funds to help a couple of our brothers in need, toaster a safe journey to a old friend, and brought together friends old and new.
I am proud to call myself a Kayak Fisherman and to have been a part of something so special.

Thank you all,
Eric / Yakhopper

Had a really good time at Tiki this year. No rain! Thanks Eric and FW for doing this. Rich and I had a contest for the biggest bird. I did not get a pic of one of mine on the trough, so I guess you won. Unless we can measure it against an item of known size. I ended up paddling almost 20 miles in 2 and a half days with a very heavy, but sleek T160i, loaded with fishing and hunting gear. Only caught a handful of small stripers and a few LMB all weekend. One apology goes to G-whiz. I'll stay outside of the Asian circle from now on.  :smt005

Awesome time, Rob, I think we both won on the duck/goose contest! All I can say about this weekend, was you just have to experience it for yourself! Paddling out in the fog, and watching the transition from fog to bright warm sunshine, made for some mental images that will be with me for a lifetime! Jeff and I saw this boater, on a bank, 8 feet above water line, dry docked on the grass! I hope Jeff took a pic! The two guys passed out during the night, supposedly on anchor, and as the high tide hit, a barge came by, and the wake pushed them up onto the bank! I did not have a camera or gopro with me, but it was funny.

What a great time!  I hate to admit that I considered not attending since I figured 100+ people would be a mess at such a small venue, but I'm glad I went.

Mega props to you, Yakhopper, for keeping things organised and fun.  I was really glad to see you get some time on the water for a change!

17 new yakkers, that is amazing!

Thanks Eric and NCKA bro's (and sisters :smt044 )   3 small Large mouth bass for me. Sorry no pictures so it didn't happen, But one I caught was only 2" longer than the minnow it ate! (NCKA potluck style) Loved the great food everyone shared. Good times (AND NO SKUNK ON MY BACK)

Thanx for taking stuff off my hands, I had a ton of crap that I dont have to deal with anymore....

NCKA has forever changed me in great ways, thanx and all my love to everyone of ya!

Got some fresh blood on the deck this evening. Had more bites in the 2 hours out this evening then all weekend at Tiki :smt044.
This kayak handles much different than the X-Factor, much faster but has is a little more wobble. Had fun and can't wait till the next journey.

I am really excited that I now have some creditability under my belt with my manager when I talk about kayak fishing. That is probably the best thing about this.
Thank you Rich (MontanaN8V) for letting us crash at your place much appreciated. Thank you Jeff (IRoeLikeThat) for the boost of confidence the night before saying I would win (I can't believe you predicted that). Thank you Mike (Sledge) for everything you are an awesome man. And thank you everyone else for giving me such a hard time as you came in with your fish.
Congrats to Ashley (Miss Ash), you did an amazing job out there and I hope you and I can continue to win these events and show the guys us girls are just as good without a female division.
Congrats to David (Tweak) as well for third, you did an amazing job for the first event involving NCKA members that I've seen you at.

Oh man, where to start!!!

For starters, a huge thanks to Eric (yakhopper) for making such a long drive and putting soooo much time and energy into making this event possible.

Second, Congrats to Madam Kat and David!

At first I wasn't even sure I wanted to fish this event, but later decided that I better get my money's worth since I bought a fishing license and have only gone fishing once this year.  Never crossed my mind that I would making it in the top 3 with all these amazing fishermen.

Had a wonderful time with some old friends and made some new ones.

Glen, thanks again for letting me use your fryer.  Without you and your wife, the fried cheesecake would not have been possible.

Ben, I wish you nothing but the best in life and I'm really gonna miss you........you are one of my favorite people.  Glad that I am going to have something to remember you by and I hope that I will see you again.

Last but not least, I wanna thank Naoaki for always being such a great sport and always being so supportive of me.  I'm glad that he is able to take all the shit he gets for me kicking his ass at fishing!

OK my two cents, I was one of the new guys and everyone made me feel like a friend, what a great group of  kayakers.  I live in Modesto so I showed up early Sunday morn totally green to this event, met Eric at the dock and he helped me put my yak in the water. I left early right at 7 am saying hi to a few but not really meeting anyone and headed out to the unknown. Never been to TIKI LAGUN or that part of the Delta before. It was fogy and calm as the first few headed out including myself. The whole day was gorgeous, no wind, tidal movement minimal, the fog burned off and it was a clear day, no wind too. No wind in the Delta ! I didn't catch anything but I did get a nice strike but didn't get to set the hook, I am not used to sitting in my yak for that long and my butt hurt from the seat that came with my OK Prowler, I gotta fix that, so I called it quits and made it back about 1:00 or so. Once back I packed up and loaded my yak on the car and went over to the camp area where everything was going to take place. I felt a little insecure being new not knowing anyone but that changed as soon as I entered the area and started approaching people, I felt welcome and introductions came easy from everyone I was around. Next year I want to camp with the group instead of showing up the morning of. All in all a great event and I can' wait for the next one. Oh yea congrats to the winners too.

Congrats to all the winners. It sounds like another epic gathering of the tribe. I wish i could have gone. It is super cool that yakhopper, ocean kayak and the fisherman's wherehouse put these events on for free. That kind of generosity truly captures the spirit of this brotherhood of kayakanglers. My hat is off to my homies at the fisherman's where house.

I promised I would write more, so here it is  :smt003

Note:  See the bottom of the post for a picture of the path I fished marked with numbers that related to where I caught fish as described in the post.

I decided to drive out Sunday since Saturday I was pounding the Howe Ave AR stretch to no avail.  The skunk train was in full effect...WOOO....WOOOOOOO.....

I had decided that Sunday would be a every option available kinda day.  I had preplanned my strategy and I was dead set on seeing it through.  My plan was to go North to the Deep Water Channel as last year I hung out in Empire Cut and the Bridge and caught literally 50+ fish, but none with any size.

The day before I grabbed some minnows and pile worms.  I already had the redworms stocked in my garage fridge aka the GO TO Bait!  On the way out to Tiki, I stopped by Rio Vista Bait and grabbed some fresh shad.  I would have zero excuses!

Got to Tiki at 6AM, still before 1st light and loaded up.  Checked in with Eric and was the on the water in total darkness.  I switched on the headlamp and start moving out.  Once I clear the initial weed garden just outside of Tiki, I decided to toss out a Shad Rap (KVD Boxset).  I'll be honest, I had ZERO confidence in catching anything, but I'll share a secret with you if you don't already know....You can't catch fish without a line in the water!

I peeled off about 100 feet and just started beating feet out to the channel.  I was well over 3 mph when the trolling pole just started peeling...FISH ON!  I slowly started playing him in, and sure enough landed my first fish, a 15" striper.  Now what was special to me about this fish?  This is literally the 1st fish I have EVER caught on a non-worm/swim bait artificial.  I am typically a finesse fisherman either jigging plastic worms or slow rolling a swim bait.  I was psyched to have finally landed one with a lipless crankbait!

Fish Marker #1

I thought for sure this would mean the bite was on!  But alas, as we know, it was not!  I kept trolling out to Acker Island .  I took the left (North West) channel past Lost Isle and headed out to deeper water.  I snapped this shot of Lost Isle that I just love:

The fog was thick but the sun was battling through and I was a little bit nervous about the boats that periodically materialized out of the fog to be moving quickly and 15 feet from you.

At the channel I hooked right and went out to a channel marker.  I tied up and tossed out a pile worm/shad combo...HEAVY bite.  I immediately set, but nothing.  I reeled up and I had just the head of the shad left.  Pretty sure it was a sturgeon given the surgical nature of the bite.

I fished there a few more mins while the sun finished burning of the last few remnants of the fog.  I decided to cross the channel and toss at the drop with pile worms.  I am glad as I did as a sharp tug indicated another bite.  Strong hook set landed me another striper and my largest of the day at almost 16":

Fish Marker #2

I drifted around for a bit and noticed that there was some bait surface action closer in to the shore in shallow water.  I rigged up one of the minnows and tossed it out under a bobber with 2 feet of leader and waited.  It wasn't long before the bobber started moving erratically and then shot under the water.  I knew enough to wait, so counted off 5 seconds and set.  FISH ON!  Unfortunately it turned out to be a little guy with a big appetite as he literally took a jumbo minnow that was larger than I would've guessed he would take.  He was around 10" so I didn't even bother taking a picture.

I decided to cross back and throw at the point just downstream from the deepwater channel and Hog Island.  I wasn't get any bites on pile worms or shad so I switched it up to the GO TO bait....redworms on a #12.  Sure enough...tap...tap...tap... and I landed another short striper:

Fish Marker #4

I fished the channel then the entry way back to Turner Cut quite a bit to no avail, so decided to head back towards Tiki.  Got about 1/2 there and noticed that some large pump over pipes started pumping water.  Decided to throw out some redworms and landed the smallest striper I have ever caught, then proceeded to land a redear pretty much every cast.

Fish Marker #5

Fish Marker #6

I decided that was enough and honestly, any longer and I wouldn't be able to turn in.  Despite some radio chatter, no one was telling what the size of their fish was, so I thought the near 16" would have an outside chance at landing me a top 3... nope :)

Oh well.  6.34 miles of paddling and given the drifting and repositioning it went much higher.  If you want to see the general path I took:

Got back to the launch and put everything way to truck over to the picnic area.  Found out the top 3 were 20+" so didn't even bother turning in the photos of mine.  Unfortunately I am not the most outgoing person and despite trying, I always feel like a loner.  It's just who I am I guess!  I talked to a few people, but ultimately sat back, drank some beer, and people watched.  I ended up scoring a Fishermans Warehouse hat from Eric that I love (Thanks Eric!).  Watched the women damn near sweep the stage, nice job Chicas!  Then the grand prize giveaway.  Who couldn't have a smile on their face seeing the surprise!

Drove back to Vacaville thinking the whole way about how awesome Yakhoppers Series is and how much I love fishing Tiki :)  I vote scrap Capels and do two events at Tiki next year!  :smt044

Thank you Eric for putting on such an amazing event and thank you to all the sponsors!

I'd totally be down for Trinidad!  I won't be able to drive out until late FrIday night though.  Unfortunately I need to work Friday but I can try to get off early.

Send me a PM if you are still game. I'll bring the beer, squid, and pile worms!

Erik,

Thanks you so much for organizing these events and getting such fine sponsors and prizes..

Congrats to the winners Jimbo, Ash, Kat and david.

This was my only event in the Yakhopper series that I could make this year but  I came with great anticipation....I was so looking fwd to seeing the ole gang and enjoying the comraderie.
In spite of getting only 3hrs sleep, coupled with the fact that I had to fly to NY that nite, I was determined to press thru the fatigue and get into some stripers.

didnt catch anything but really enjoyed peddaling out with my buds Hobiedave, Martin, Sonny  and Rey out along Empire cut to Mildred Isl.. the early morning fog was so picturesque. glad to score a cool raffle prize.

great community spirit and sharing.. cheers to all who made this happen.

First off Thank you Eric for all the time you must put into these!!. Thank you to all the sponsors who also put out for these events. Our first event we were able to make was fantastic.  Started off a little rough, Robyn was not able to get OTW with us, and late, but knew we were there when I got the hairy eyeball, WTF , oh new guy look from Mooch when I pulled in the wrong way.  :smt044  A quick explanation and clarification from Eric and we were getting ready. I told the Fam you know your late when the person taking the paperwork is OTW before you. We rolled out just in time to see ASH catch her fish :smt003.  Caught my first Stripper about 100yards up and then drifted along the rest of the day. Turned to find my oldest pulled up next to Sledge and he had not only caught his first bass, he had to hand line it in.  3rd fish hes done that with. Hm-mm think I see a handle for him.  :smt003 My second son caught his stripper at 12:30, nothing like cutting it close lol and we headed in. Everyone we ran into was friendly and talkative and helpfull. Thank you Mooch, Kat  and others for making sure Robyn felt welcome. We are looking forward to more events in the future.
