Title: Scotts Valley Fishing Park
Post by: & on February 20, 2017, 04:49:17 PM
Anyone have any experience with this so called fishing park, just off of Mt Herman Road?  I bring my lunch and eat there sometimes.  Its peaceful, but I can't imagine that stream pooling up sufficiently to sustain a put and take planter fishery.  Its either blown out, or reduced to a droughty trickle.

Never even new about this spot. I wonder how many places are up in those hill's. There's not much information about the place on the web.

They used to plant trout in there when they first built the park. Probably over 15+ years ago now? They would put in a temporary wooden dam in the spring, then take it out in the fall. down where the other creek meets. Not sure if they do it anymore but im sure it had something to do with city funds or water flow.

Used to fish there as a kid about 7 years old when they stocked it, but that's long gone now. I believe this is part of Carbonera creek and although it's full of water now it's usually reduced to nothing more than a trickling stream when this crazy weather isn't around. I've personally seen trout in Carbonera creek before as it runs through my fiances-grandmas backyard and it pools up there, but I doubt you'd find anything close to the Vern Fishing area. I work down the road from there and frequently stop to eat lunch. It's too bad they don't dam it up for the kids anymore.

You would be surprised whats lurking in there ?

Reminds me of Uvas dam. We lived just off of little uvas road were a small creek on our property fed into Uvas dam. In summer it was bone dry. With the winter rains the creek in are yard would be about 8 ft across and maybe 3 to 4 feet deep. When the rains would subside the creek would flow at maybe 8 inches . The spawning trout that migrated up from Uvas would be active at night. You could go out with a flash light and they would scatter from the gravel beds to the deeper pools. Great memory.
