Are sponsors going to be need??I believe that they will, when the time comes I would be happy to sponsor you and Bojangles. Don't know the other fellows.
Myself and Bojangles42 (we did Trinidad RFW IV), Ripnlipz24/7, and possible 1 more guy would love to go. I've got a reservation at Beachcomber.

Saw, we have you and them covered !! Can't wait, my wife and I are already planning the trip!!!
Jeff
let the countdown start!
Like everyone can't wait. Got the reservations. Always have a great time. Only one question? when do you stop being a newbe. :smt001 :smt001 :smt001previous gs participant don't need sponsorship. 1st timer must be sponsored.
Love the rockfish change. You rock Brother.
Love the rockfish change. You rock Brother.
+1. I like it.
Now the question.... if I send my entry for $25.00 can I enter the pro division later before the tournament by paying the $10.00 difference?
Thank you for that feedback.
This is what I have in mind:
- competition limited to lingcod, salmon and halibut (both Pacific and California);
- competitors able to turn in up to 4 fish, but no more than 2 of one species;
- no C&R bonus, but points may be scored with a video release;
- most total inches = AOTD.
This is a Pro Division and will cost more to enter. Cash prize for AOTD will be based on number of Pro Division entries.
The standard $25 entry will get you the usual schwag bag with t-shirt, tackle and HT Extension plus automatic entry into the raffle drawing for the Oldtown Predator XL, but you're not in the AOTD competition. I'll still create a scoreboard with the usual species, but it will be to some extent auto-recorded by participants. (maybe RCG side bet guys will man that scoreboard?...)
Pro Division entry at $35 will also receive the schwag and allow for $10 x # of Pro Division entries = Grand Prize Cash Purse. Pro Division entries will also be in the raffle for the Predator XL.
Nothing will be set in stone prior to January 1.
Feedback welcome. :smt001
I like the change. We may not have a Pacific halibut season in May though. Does the pro division include the tshirt?
The non pro division competes for the kayak and other prizes
Instead of calling it Pro Division why not say High and Low Roller. Calling it Pro will seem like only the best should play in that field. By using these terms I think more will feel they have a chance and get in. I think anyone has a chance to win on any given day. It takes luck and skill, not just one or the other. Just my thoughts to get more entries.
Super Excited Eric!
As a new competitor, im stoked to be up there learning and fishing with a bunch of awesome people.
Question,
If pro devision is optional not mandatory, would both people on a tandem be required to fish in the same division?
Aloha,
Isao
How about 2 kayaks Eric?
Let say $50 to enter the pro division for an AOTD kayak prize for the competitive spirits.
And $25 or so for the general entrants just wanting to take part in GS and maybe win a kayak on the raffle.
Those doing the pro will also be included in the raffle.
There is always side bets going on anyway for those wanting cash. Just an idea! :smt003
I would want to review that on a case by case basis, Isao. Having gotten to know you and Amber I definitely approve if you two choose to fish in separate divisions. :smt001
I'll be showing up to Shelter a week early, how much is your guide service? Thanks!
How about 2 kayaks Eric?
New format sounds easier to score and weigh in.
Stop already! I already have my New Year's Hard On! :smt003
The focus this year is on gathering to enjoy each other and the Cove. That's the part I like. Maybe cause I don't win big :toothy11:
:smt001
Tournament details and registration forms are up on the first post of this thread. Check it out, and ask questions here if you have them.
I tried to open the documents, but I'm being informed by my computer that it takes Microsoft Office to do that and I don't have Microsoft Office. I tried to just download it and open it, but now my computer tells me that its a WORD document and I can only open it in WORD, I guess that's a part of OFFICE so I can't can open, see or print the forms. Is there some other way to view and print these?

Hey Al, I figured out how to open without using WORD;
download the file, then insert it as an attachment to an e-mail to my Hotmail/Outlook account (A Microsoft product)f. Once I get the e-mail, I am offered the option to open it on line with my web browser. Ta DA!!!!!

Right on, Matt!Hellllzzz yeah :smt004. I'd love to hook into another of those beasts. The Cove is where it's at!!
Maybe these guys will be around too... :smt004
Chris - I had estimated my thresher at 9', but yours looks more stout. Still has beautiful coloring too - great shot of a great fish, man. I really hope to hook into another one. :smt001Thanks Eric, Danglin. It was a stout, thick fish for sure--what probably added to his weight was the fact he had a pair of HUGE milt sacs in him. Maybe the dude was looking for some lady threshers? I dunno. It looked thicker than the other threshers I saw caught from the Cove last summer.
It was at that point that ChuckE says, " I don't know Danglin, I think were going to need a 3 count of control…"
Super stoked for sure, now the question is to get a hotel room or tow the new Rpod trailer over ?
Like the new format Eric, will do my best to weed out a couple of those rockfish eating lings :smt003
Adrienne and I will be in her Rpod
I don't have to duck in her Rpod. It's a 2014 RP179 and Adrienne is 5'11 and Im 6'5". There is plenty of headroom from our experience.Quote from: matanaska

That's cool Rob, but you're going to have a stiff neck ducking inside the whole time :smt003, they are nice trailers but anyone over 6' feet could have a problem.
Read the attached information and forms, and ask questions here if you have them.
You form teams separate from the tournament, and I don't record who's on what team. Each of the past several years someone has kept track of the teams and done a team scoring event within the event. I welcome that contribution - I think it's likely that someone will step up to do it this year. There's plenty of time yet, and I'm sure you'll have no problem getting on a team.
Again, I require fishing in teams of at least two, but I don't police it. If you die I will be asking your teammate, "WTF?!"
Again, I require fishing in teams of at least two, but I don't police it.
If anybody is looking for a noob team mate I am in need of a team :smt006
I believe the A-Hulls also began as a GS safety team. It's true!
OK, so the pro division is competing for a cash prize where only Lingcod, Salmon and Halibut will score. But what about the regular division? How is the scoring done? Can you clarify in the 1st post?

Regular division = swag bag + raffle ticket. No scoring, no prizes.

Eric. Is cash to your P O Box preferable for registration and fees?
Right on! Thanks for figuring out how to get the docs open.I look forward to meeting you too and fishing up north. My boss has approved the time off. :smt003 Now all I need is my sponsor. :smt006
I'm glad you'll try to make it, Traildad, and it will be good to meet you as well, Jerry. :smt001
Pacific halibut will be more likely to catch, but this kind will count for points too.
We've come a long way baby!
I will get my stuff in and see you there.

I will be there and planning on bringing skylar to fish the tourney
Check is going out today!
Can't wait for some more of this!
Hey Eric. Not sure if there's another thread on this, but is the camping situation same as previous years? First come first serve?
I've been having dreams about salmon fishing, even been getting all my gear together.... Even though it's 4 months away, hopefully only 4 months anyway.
I started reading the GS-5 topic so I won't be a complete and totally clueless noob. 73 pages! I made it half way through. Is there an audio version? :smt044 I liked the stories. I was a little surprised. It seems that quite a few of the guys are not active on the boards anymore. I will be sending in my registration this week. :smt007 :smt006
Can't believe how long I've been an Ncka member and still haven't made this event.
Well...this is the year that changes. I'm definitely coming. I'll drop my reg forms and cash in the mail tomorrow. I think I can find somebody to sponsor me ;)
I'm really looking forward to finally meeting you in person Eric.

I doubt i will be there this year but someday I will make it to Shelter Cove!!
Has it been decided, are the hoodies pull over or zip up?
I think I can find somebody to sponsor me ;)You can put me down as your sponsor, Deva. And bring some discs too haha...

Just reserved a hotel room for wife, kids, dog and me!
Title says 72 days today February 2nd. What is in 72 days? That's April 15th. I thought GS9 was on May 16th. 103 days to May 16th.
Which hotel? Some of my family might come, but I don't know the area well.

More than likely it looks like there will be no targeting Pacific halibut @ GS9 since the options decided by HASA (Humboldt Area Saltwater Association) that will be passed on to CA DFW to be brought to the IPHC meeting for determining our pacific halibut season will not be open on the 16th. Their 1st choice to be given to CA DFW is opening the 1st and 3rd week of May through August and then September 1st through October 31st. The 2nd choice would be similar to CA DFW option number 3 which is open from 1st-15th of May-August then September 1s through October 31st.
If you do want to target a pacific halibut this season I will be getting my guide license this spring. :smt002 I have got over 10 pac butts by kayak in the last 3 years with half of them over 40".
I'm not just reposting from Humboldtuna.com, I actually went to the meeting. The Shelter Cove guys kept getting told to be quiet and their is a possibility of the launch in Trinidad closing because last year's closure in August was a loss of over $20,000. The launch had just got out of the red in 2013.Quote from: matanaskaMore than likely it looks like there will be no targeting Pacific halibut @ GS9 since the options decided by HASA (Humboldt Area Saltwater Association) that will be passed on to CA DFW to be brought to the IPHC meeting for determining our pacific halibut season will not be open on the 16th. I'm tracking that, and the 3rd week of May has potential depending on the dates they are defining that by. Either way, I'll respond to it and inform the tournament field of any changes that may be needed in the format.
Is there a 200 person entry limit?
you might want to edit out the account number Eric.
Please make sure this is one of the reasons you're attending GS:
Hey all,
Rob just posted the proposed two(2) options for the Halibut fishery this year and neither option shows the season to be open on the day of GS-9. Rut row...might have to revisit the format. Eric..your thoughts?
SRJ
Bummed I'm not gonna make it this year due to a conflicting schedule but I hope to be back in 2016. I'll be thinking about 'the Cove' in the meantime.

Thank you, Shannon. I'm waiting for the official DFW regulation to come out, but it does look like we may not be halibut fishing on tourney day. If that's the case then it'll be a salmon and lingcod show only - turn in up to 4 fish, no more than two lingcod. Of course, if someone catches a California halibut it would be eligible.
I'll revise the intro post and forms once DFW publishes the rule.

Omar is going to participate this year. Do I need to sponsor him if he was at GS7 as a non-participant?
I recently bought my wife a Predator 13 and we both love it! I will make room to haul my new Predator XL home from GS9. Ha!
You're welcome to all the fish I bring in, as long as someone else is willing to fillet them (last year I made a mess of them bad).I will be happy to fillet them for the taco shack..
@Darius, I'll bring you some to fillet too. Those who are going to donate at Taco shack I will be happy to fillet them.

I'll be sending my registration soon.

Any particular reason for hali take season reduction Eric?
Interesting, I will read up on it. Be nice to hook one, like Bigfoot did, but would also be nice to do it at a GS event where plenty are there to lend a hand, things are vicious!
A California halibut would still count toward AOTD scoring, but it is now basically a salmon and lingcod competition. We could sub in Thresher Sharks like the beauties they caught at Shelter last summer. :smt003

Eric,
I applaud your conservation efforts. Shelter Cove is a beautiful place and I hope my kids can experience the kind of fishing I've experienced.
What about adding green ling to the species list for GS? I think having salmon, ling cod and green ling sets up a fun, diverse and yet challenging bag for any competitive angler. We all know catching ling cod as by catch while trolling for salmon is a common occurrence. Adding a species like green ling really mixes the pot. Shelter cove has a very healthy green ling population and I think it's fun to catch those little buggers on light tackle.
Mike

Better keep your eyes peeled with all that GWS food in one location.
I think it is very I relevant to this thread. Showing they are there.
Shouldn't that be on the Salmon Opener thread, or a new report, Rob, instead of GS9?

Eric, do you often get a lot last minute entries? Looks like we may upwards of maybe 130 when its all said and done. That's freaking nuts.Weren't there over 200 last year. I got the idea this year is going to be subdued, only 150 or so. :smt044

It's not a bad idea, Mike, but I'm keeping it as is. Total inches on Salmon, Lingcod and Cali Hali - four fish turned in with no more than 2 of one species. Lingcod over 30" landed and safely released on video gets 4" bonus. 500 simoleons to AOTD, and runnerup cash is building to $300 - if we hit that then third place pot builds to max of $200.

Sheeesh...I wondered when you were going to pull the pin.
I have a friend who I have hardly been able to spend any time with at GS lately even though he is always there. Love you brother.
At this moment I would be happy with 119th place. Money can't buy the friendships and good times that is GS.

how is the crabbing in Shelter Cove or is it closed at in May?
and if ok, how deep?
Thanks

There is no need for skipping out on paying, being rude and obnoxious, or going against any of these simple rules. I support this 100%.
Looks pretty reasonable to me and not any different from anyplace I have stayed. It might be helpful to clarify what is expected of people not staying in the campground, such as where to park and if they are expected to pay as a visitor who is not spending the night. In the past, I have rented a house but spent evenings with friends at the campground. Sometimes I parked in my friends campsites or near them. Does this violate the extra car issue? I'll be in the campground with the Man Van this year so this isn't an issue for me but it could be for others.

Jack told me about a new business in town that's in that great old restaurant building that overlooks the harbor - "Lost Coast Surf Shack".+1
All good points on Jack's, Eric's, and others concerns. Maybe one other item that might be addressed in advance...."Parking/traffic on the beach". I know Eric covers this at the safety meeting but it is difficult to hear his speech due to the size of the crowd. I have made all the recent GS events and have yet to park on the beach. With limited parking down there it only seems reasonable for the able bodied people in our group to wheel down and lock your wheels at the guardrail. This relieves the pressure on the launching tractor and other truck/boat launchers. There is always someone willing to allow us to hitchhike on their tail gate for a ride back up the hill towing your kayak. Just a thought. Let's have fun!!!
Thanks for reiterating that this is a family event. I've never been to a GS event, but I have been to other events. Everyone seems so nice and friendly, it's hard to believe that there has ever been any problems. The only thing that has ever happened at any event I attended was the music with the obscene lyrics. Rap stuff that would singe the hair off a sailor. Ha! (No, not the uke jam sessions!) I can't even say if it was anyone within the NCKA group or some other camper. I just kept moving on until I found a group chilling out and far enough away to not hear the lyrics.2-3 people on the tailgate of a truck holding their kayak with wheels attached is the easiest way up the hill.
I am also cheered to hear that bumming a ride up the hill may not be problem. I am not as young as I used to be and dragging my PA up that hill has me rethinking what I would do. Sounds like carting it DOWN the hill to the water won't be a problem?
What are the tides looking like for GS?
I'm interested to hear what he has to say about group area vs individual sites. I tried to make a reservation a couple weeks back and he said I couldn't because it would be one large group area. Please let us know if that changes.
Gimme Shelter at Shelter Cove, California is a place for peace, love and good times with family and close friends - let's keep it that way. :smt001

I support this Eric. Many families don't attend NCKA events because of the drugs, alcohol, profanity and disorderly conduct. This has been a detriment to some events. As an event organizer, you have to set the culture and expectations for the event. Whatever you decide, I will support it.
On the other hand, partying hard is also part of NCKA, at least a part of NCKA. Having events where people can can do their thing is also good. It's like "Burning Man", people who go know what to expect. I think having family events vs non-family is a good thing. I like both. :smt005
It basically boils down to using common sense.
Should be a cake walk.

Thanks for bringing this up. Am & I parked on the beach last year just cause we were up early and excited, and it seemed like it was all good. This year we will wheel down like the youngsters we are :smt003
I'm glad you parked there last year. I got to meet you and Am when you gave me a ride up. Thanks again.
Aloha,
Isao
Somebody starts a count down PLEASE! :smt003Do it Sonny!
Last Friday night as I was winding down about to go lay down in the camper, a local in a big truck drove on to the airstrip and floored it going North. While I was cleaning my fish I could hear a bunch of drama at the beach ànd a truck came racing up the hill.
The locals can definitely cause problems if they get mixed in our group.

I was there in August and a local was speeding on the beach South of the ramp. He kept doing donuts in the sand until his truck just stalled.
Then he got it started again and sped North and up the ramp doing around 45MPH.
Crazy SOB :smt009
I'm interested to hear what he has to say about group area vs individual sites. I tried to make a reservation a couple weeks back and he said I couldn't because it would be one large group area. Please let us know if that changes.
That's strange. I made a reservation for site #7 back on December 30th. I called yesterday to confirm and he verified my name, address, dates and site #.
Perhaps all he has left is the group area?

Same guy in the old beat up dodge pick-up?
Last year and the year before he did the same thing. I remember him yelling something highly intelligent regarding those dam kayakers.
We couldn't really understand him due to the tabacki in the lip and his modified "No-No" exhaust system. :smt102
Ahhh, what a fun day.
I hope you can make it, Alex. No prob sending your schwag with PK or Sonny if you can't attend. You do need to be present to win the raffle. I think there'll be plenty of space to camp.

wow, there are just so many ways to win…..or in my case lose. no matter, once my flip-flops hit the sand,.i have already won.
Assess yourself. What do you know about the buoys and dangerous reef areas just offshore at the Cove? Picture yourself having to launch in pea soup and find your way to where you want to go, or, even worse, picture yourself encountering pea soup that sets in while you're out there.
You MUST have the tools to navigate in zero viz - no question about it. You MUST have a basic understanding of the layout of the Cove and where you would need to go in order to safely return ashore. You MUST have as much redundancy in your navigational, communications and other gear as you can - I carry 2 compasses, 1 GPS and 3 VHF's, plus other gear like extra paddle, water, flares, first aid kit...etc.
Here are some pieces to get you started on your study session for the Cove:
- what direction is it, precisely, from the launch to the Bell Buoy?
- what direction is it, precisely, from the Bell to the Whistle?
- what points of shore and shallow reef would factor in if you land in pea soup and need to get back to launch?
Before you get to the Cove, even if you've already been there, please study the maps and nautical charts -
After reading Eric's admonitions I purchased a basic Suunto compass for 15 bucks and downloaded the Shelter Cove chart (18620) from here:
http://www.charts.noaa.gov/PDFs/PDFs.shtml
My fish finder has charts and GPS, my VHF has GPS and DSC. Got a whiste abd signed up on a team. Hopefully ready to to participate in GS9

Every time I guide at the Cove I give all the info I can about all of this, and I'll talk about much of this at the group safety meeting Friday evening at 5PM at the launch, the evening before the tourney.
Good map. :smt001Navionics mobile. I have it on my iPhone also. The little reddish square x marks are rocks. The oval with the hash marks is a shipwreck.
I just paddled over all of that all day! It's a trip to look at that map and think of all the places I've caught fish there. The Cove rules. How close is the course to the one you recomended to get out to the red marker?
I'll have to get me some of them fancy maps at some point. :smt003
Keep on studying.
i still remember the first time i headed out from the cove. We were heading out and it was clear and when we got close to the buoy/bell we were blanketed by very thick fog. It just came out of no where and the only thing you can use to navigate was the gps off my fish finder. Even if it looks nice out it can turn in a couple of minutes/hours so come prepared.

Just buy the Navionics app for your phone. It's cheap and that's what the maps looks like. It's also works as a backup gps.
So will Navionics work even if your cell phone doesn't up there?
So will Navionics work even if your cell phone doesn't up there?
Yes. It works off of the GPS in your phone, not wifi or cell signals.

Cool thanks........so whats the difference from the free download and the one you have to pay for?
well the bad news is i missed the deadline to sign up for the tourney
the GOOD NEWS is that I'm still coming up and I'm bringing along my wife and kids ( dog too). i already know my kids are gonna love it up there and can't wait to see there faces smiling playing on the beach. plan on getting up there thursday night and staying into sunday. Shelter cove is something i look forward to every year and this year i get to share it with my family!
Verizon has spotty connection otw, but I can still manage to post live reports on Facebook. US cellular works the best at the Cove since they bought the local company Redwood cellular.Don't the cell companies still have roaming? I guess you would need the same kind of service that US Cellular uses.
So will Navionics work even if your cell phone doesn't up there?I just tested it on my phone. I put the phone in airplane mode which turns off cell service, cellular data, wifi etc. it still showed my location. So with GPS on my Ff, Navionics Boating app, hand held GPS, radio with GPS and a compass, I should at least be able to figure out which way up is. :smt044

ATT doesn't work at all, verizon iphones do though. I have no idea how roaming works anymore, but if you have ATT you will not get reception at the cove.

Right on Andy!
I'm bummed I can't make it this year, but I'm glad Y'all are.
You were one of the first fools I met up there!
Have fun.
Who is still going to be around and fishing on Sunday?
I can't make the tournie, but thinking I might jam up there after the Rose Parade on Saturday, camp, and fish Sunday.
Eric, this might have been mentioned already but will B2Squid be there selling their wares again? Need to replenish my stock. Love, love, love their mini squid as droppers.

+1...love using the mini squid as teasers!
My team mate/sponsor and I would like to join a team or make an offer. I am new at Gimme Shelter (I know squat about the cove), but John has fished the GS tourney B4.
We are team; Fog Lifters.
I/we can join up with(?) , or take on a partner or 2.

Statistics wasn't that bad. Calculus was worse.

I also had a few dozen Loleta Eric's Guide Service shirts printed up - if anyone wants to support me by buying one it's much appreciated. :smt001

Just checked a long range forecast, and saw that friday has a 2.5ft @ 18 seconds that appears to be downgrading, any thoughts on that?

2.5 @ 18 sounds fine - that's usually coming out of the SW, so the surfers will be digging it down at Deadman's.

my wonderful wife of nearly 25 years made a decision that blew me away. It will require us to remain home a couple more days, but we will be arriving at the cove mid Tuesday in a much newer and better equipped Man-Van II
It's hard to get any work done when all I can think is.....in exactly 7 days from now, I'll be sitting around the campfire with friends, telling stories about the morning's fishing session, while enjoying an ice cold beer and digesting what will undoubtedly be another epic Shelter Cove dinner! I'm feeling fat & happy just thinking about it :-)

Hopefully the salmon move in. As of now most of the action is out of Fort Bragg. We should have some new info on the salmon bite this weekend. There is usually a few trout sized around Bread n Butter though. For anyone fishing Friday or earlier, I'll be hunting halibut once or twice.
Wingshooter and I are looking for a spot to sell our jigheads/swimbaits on Friday evening. Is anyone willing to let us set up a table in their camp site?
I think we'll be gathering around my spot Friday evening for oysters. You can set up a table there if you want. RV site #7. I get there around noon Thursday.

Radiator flushed, new water pump installed, new belts and hoses. They all looked good bit I'm not taking any chances after 180K on the Silverado.
New tires, new wheels, new antifreeze, oil changed. Camper cleaned, outdated food tossed. Note to self; fill fresh water tank!
Just finished the 10 hour drive to Prunedale from Az. So far so good. Spending a couple of days with family and friends before I head up Thursday. Then more time with friends!!!!
Loaded up and ready to roll at first light tomorrow. Should be at tides inn by mid afternoon tomorrow. Good times and great friends ahead.
As Eric mentioned earlier, everyone please drive safe, especially on the road in from garberville. And Defanatly be sure your breaks are in good order for the final decent into the cove. If need be, take a few moments to pull over and let them cool.
Stay safe my friends, good times ahead.

Just wondering. I've heard some people say that Verizon cell service works at Shelter Cove. Does anybody know if the Verizon data works over there? My cell phone is using ATT but I have an Ipad that uses Verizon and could make and receive calls from home via my MagicJack app as long as I have WiFi or data cellular.

+1 My breaks got soft when I was driving that road in my old Ford Focus. The engine was too small to serve as an effective break with an overloaded car. We had to stop twice to let the brakes cool .

My Verizon iPhone can make and receive calls and texts but my data doesn't work and campground doesn't have wifi.

Newer automatic transmissions are CVT's (constant velocity transmission) and don't HAVE a 2nd or 3rd option any more you can use for braking.

In cases like that, it is a good idea to down shift to a lower gear to help with the load of breaking. It is a good idea in general. I down shift into 3 rd gear below 40 and 2nd gear at 25 to 30. Try to keep the rpms below 5/6 k so that I am not putting to much of a load on the transmission as well.

Hey Eric, do you know when B2 Squid will be set up? I am pretty stoked on supporting them and using their lure.

Right on, Amos. Kelly and LaWana are great people and very supportive of not only GS but other events too. I think they're coming down Friday evening, and they're staying through Sunday. Saturday should be their big day where you can score gear from them, but I hope they're accessible Friday too so people can get some gear for the tourney.
I can't even believe I'm even typing this right now but I'm not going to make it :smt010 :smt009Family First! Hope all is well.
Mrs. Flogger has made a turn for the worse with her health. She is scheduled for surgery next Wednesday for a non life threatening procedure that must get performed ASAP. She is currently uncomfortable but in good spirits :smt004
I thought for sure that this would be my year to finally attend GS but it is not to be so. While I have been preparing for this trip for months and want nothing more than to attend...Family first.
I hope one of my homies can pickup my attendance package for me and bring it to PIF.
I apologize to my team mates the SC Slayers. You guys will have to carry on without me. I won't be offended if you decide to change your name.
Good luck out there and be safe. See you all next year :smt008 :smt006

I just looked at Accuweather and it looks like it's only going to reach the high 50s and the low is 38. It also calls for a couple of rain showers tomorrow. It's gonna be cold at night!
This will be my 6th year in a row up at GS!!

ps..for those wondering where to ab dive....I've had better luck the further I've paddled from the launch/lighthouse...Abalone Point is a well known spot for nice abs/fish, but be careful if trying to shore dive...sneaker waves can make entry and exit tricky at times...
Hey Guys,
Anyone have space to park the Headwaters van, Friday, Saturday and Sunday Night. Have no problem helping pay for site and/or extra beer. Apologies for the short notice, but we never know until the date gets close who will be able to go. Can't wait to get up there
I envision having fun.+1, all about having fun and hanging out with everyone. :smt004 Hopefully some nice fish too! :smt003
My goals... I visualize myself being one with nature. Tapping into that prehistoric connection we have with fishing, hunting and gathering. Man against nature with nothing but our plastic boats, paddle power and our wits, + (graphite rods, plastic baits, GPS, sonar, live wells, go pros, vhf radios and $1000 worth of assorted fishing gear.) It touches a real primal thing somewhere deep inside. Feeding our families and friends, as natural as it gets. Add to that the camaraderie gained when spending time watching each other's back out on the big blue. My goals... I visualize myself being one with nature. Tapping into that prehistoric connection we have with fishing, hunting and gathering. I envision a hearing problem next week. Because after a few days at the Cove, that gentle humming from whistle buoy gets stuck in my head.
~vvvvv vvvvvv vvvvv vvvvvv~
Add to that the invigorating musky fragrance of the furbags lounging on the whistle. Nothing like it if you're already feeling queasy. :sad3:
mmm mmm mmm, nature!
I still have 2 days of work until I get there. For now I will live through all of you who are there or arriving today.
I'm also gonna have to cancel my trip :smt010 I was planning on calling in sick on Friday and heading to the cove but a coworker is on vacation this week and I'm covering. Just thinking it's a really long trip to make solo on Friday, plus I'm trying to save money for all the graduations, weddings, bachelor parties, etc that I have to attend this summer. Don't worry team A-Hulls, you'll be better without me (I SUCK AT FISHING :smt005). Have a blast guys! Really looking forward to all the fishporn from this weekend :smt006
Eric, would you mind giving me tourney swag to either Bloodbath or Sincoast? Thanks in advance and really bummed to miss this one :smt009
Sorry for last minute cancelation :smt010 , my boss just had me sit and asked me to reschedule my vacation :smt012 . When I ask for PTO he told me its if works permit, unfortunately we have some discovery deadlines to meet.
3, Shake hand with Eric :smt005
4, ab dive once with Jim. :smt044
My ambitious goals
1, Check out Shelter Cove and kayak fishing with Fellow GS9 participants.
2, Uncover the faces of as many mysterious NCKA handles as possible. (printed the check list) :smt003
3, Shake hand with Eric :smt005
4, ab dive once with Jim. :smt044
Plan to leave tonight and hit the cove by 8am tomorrow.
If any one has Uniden marine radio, I might ask to share the charger with you. Mine is broken.
Anxious and ready!
Love to ab dive with either Eric or Jim. But shake hand with Jim takes courage. :smt0053, Shake hand with Eric :smt005

Got these in reverse, Hand Shake with Jim (I hope you pedal your hands will be useless after) :smt003 and Ab Dive with Eric (He was ABKING) :smt002

Is there any space in the campground for me to park and sleep in my truck Friday and Saturday? I'd be happy to contribute to the cost and I'll have tons of food and beverage to share. I may be rolling in late Friday so I wasn't sure if I would camp on the way or just sleep on the beach, but camping with everyone else would be much more fun.
I have a Hobie PA14 on a jet ski trailer I tow behind my RV. Would it be recommended to drop off the kayak and perhaps both the kayak AND the trailer at the bottom of ramp on my way in rather than heading straight to the campground, unloading the PA14 and carting it down the hill? That PA14 is not getting any lighter, and I'm not getting any younger. Ha!

Sounds like we should be able to find a site and settle up with the office when you arrive or in the morning. I should be camping with Pescadono around site 99. Unless there trance music gets to me.. :smt003. What time you leaving Santa cruz ? I am leaving Salinas hopefully no later than 6pm Thursday.
Alex
The campground for the most part a wide open space. Should be plenty of room for all, it's never been so full that they couldn't accommodate everyone. If your arriving late your best bet is to pull in the second drive way, and park along the fence facing the airport. Is there any space in the campground for me to park and sleep in my truck Friday and Saturday? Thanks, bro!
It was a kick ass day in the water today. One of the best weather conditions I've ever been in. Smooth glass with the occasional swell. Hardly any wind. Hope it keeps up until Monday!!!What did you catch?

I caught a 23", 21", and 16" lingcod. I released all of them. I caught my first two Kelp Greenlings, one male patterned and one female patterned. DFW at shore ID'd the species for me, Eric explained the color difference being due to gender. I caught a sculpin that was super thick, first one ever and it looked like a toad.
I also caught a 17" rockfish, don't know if it's blue or black but I don't intend to keep any rockfish anyway.
I learned how to troll in several different ways, how to rig bait in new ways (I was skeptical when I saw it first, but it easily caught fish!
It's been a great time here and I've learned so much and to think there's still three more days ahead!

I still got yo shit! U suck! Bwahahaha... Cove Life!
After 2 or so the fan really kicked up. The waves were already a bit hard to deal with before that. 5 people took a swim today from what I heard, 2 were very experienced kayakers. I almost landed in the water myself but manged the save. I went a lot further off shore than I should have knowing the report said what it said. Heading out was easy. Went out to 185' or so, 3-4 miles. We were fishing with the commercial fleet today. Was not bad till noon or so then the swells and wind wave started coming hard. Supposed to be the same report for game day. We will see. It is windy now at midnight.
The taco shack was a big hit!

I got to shelter cove with the goal of enjoying fishing, eating good food, and catching up with old friends and meeting new ones, without worrying about winning and just being happy to do what we all love, spend some quality time on the water. With two kids its been few and far between outings which is just part of being a parent…
What I got out of this weekend was all that and then some. I felt the NCKA love through all of the generosity, camaraderie, and great food. I’m glad I was able to share some as well.
When I was looking at the prizes for the raffles I thought to myself, that would be awesome to win that NCKA ceramic mug, or even a new reel. Then I see the grand prize Old Town Predator XL with a trolling motor, and now I’m thinking how cool it would be to own that! There was a break in the raffle action so I go to the room to get some stuff and I hear LilRiverMan knocking on my door…”run! They’re calling you’re name! Run!”
I book for the main stage and see people cheering and little Dylan being hoisted in the air… I won? I’m still in shock and had to pinch myself a couple of times, but I can’t wait to get this kayak on the water and get my 2.5 year old son on it for his first fishing trip.
I am humbled and amazed at what a truly awesome event this is, and grateful for everyone that makes this event a success. NCKA is the best!
Sincerely,
Roger

Special shout outs:
Eric – Thanks for sharing this special place with us, and for all of your hard work to make this happen every year.
BigJim – Putting together the raffle for a great cause.
KayakJack and the Taco Shack crew – Delicious.
Danglin – Looking out for our safety on the water.
Mike Lowery – Thanks for supporting the kayak fishing community and providing a prize I still can’t believe I won.
SC Trace – Fishing skills (2nd Place) and Happy Birthday
My little nephew Dylan – Stepping up to accept my prize in my brief absence…(must be present to win rule)
The Shu luck strikes again. Last year at Albion for Dennis; this year as Shelter Cove for you. Congratulations!!

You are way off base about NCKA events though.
The coordinators of these events put their heart and soul into them...and every single one I have ever been to is an amazing experience.
Hopefully you will see that for yourself in the future...rather than listening to someone else and publicly bad mouthing one of our annual and longest running tourneys.
some good memories from Saturday:
-paddling out to Abalone Pt on Saturday in the wind & chop with MDoka Matt & wondering "what are we doing out here?" while laughing at the conditions.
-a cold sierra on the beach with some awesome fisherman & divers
-heading to Mario's with a posse, and hearing the group cheer as each of us entered the room, and seeing some favorite OG faces (tote, Al, Jim, Antonio-you guys made the bar trip worth it)
-sharing a beverage with BigJim and extending my hand with "OK dude, gimme yer best" (all i can say is that thank goodness I work with my hands a lot :smt005 )
as you all can see, I'm at work today, but my head is still at the Cove.

You could write a book each year about all the stuff that you experience there, but some things can't be "unseen" and should not be published! :smt002

Awesome perch!!!

Awesome perch!!!
+1, and a very nice use of kelp as a game clip!
Cool story there, back home this Native American buddy of mine took him fishing, and they used a willow branch as a stringer, and called it an "Indian Stringer" so from then on, Cody has used branches, and he found a piece of kelp to make his "Indian Stringer!" He was almost as proud of that as his fish! We originally thought they were redtail perch, but the warden took the time to explain the subtle dif between the two, which was really cool. That warden up there is a class act.
Hey Sacyak,
.......My last pot was gone too but Ken found it one the beach. Not sure if it was blown or walked on the swell or encountered the same skum that hit my first one. At least I got it back.
I think my boys dug it out of the surf on Saturday afternoon and I told them to leave it up on the beach as I knew someone would come looking for it. Glad you found it.
Thanks Eric for putting on another great event. I can't begin to tell you how much this event means to me. Being able to spend quality time OTW and ocaenside with my NCKA family is uterly priceless. To me it's like a big family reunion only better :smt002i bet one of those salmon boats raided your crab pot :smt044

I had three out there that also got raided and one that I couldn't find. So if anyone finds/found it my name is on the buoy.

The ceremony went great. Jim Russell was running the raffle and coordinated everything with me – the entire time he was focused on what I needed in order to pull off the best gig. Jim was positive, attentive, diligent and absolutely flawless in his delivery of helpfulness. I cannot say enough how pro you are, Jim. Much love, brother.
...
The raffle was absolutely stacked this year....Jim and his volunteers in ticket sales and gear handling were ON it, and I couldn’t be happier with the format which allowed everyone to donate at their comfort level while having good chances at lots of different things they’d need or want. We raised nearly $4000 to be split between HOW and PIF!!!
