What's up Ron? That's the plan. End of the road, rigging up then launching at grey light.

I'll be on CH. 69 for the most part, but I also scan around to listen in on the other goings on....

Berkeley charter boat fleet fished for salmon again this morning along the Marin coastline. 12 anglers, 12 limits (big fish 27 lbs). Limits two days in a row.

Allen,
I never had the pleasure of meeting or fishing with Joel, but from everything I've read on this site it sounds like he was a kind, caring, one-of-a-kind fishing machine and a fighter 'til the end.

My thoughts will be with Joel, his family, and all his friends at the Memorial this Sunday.

Cheers,

-Alex

Recipes / Re: Sweet n' Smoky Cedar Planked Salmon Filets

Sounds pretty good. Interesting with the sesame seeds. I do pretty much the same thing, but a little more basic. Salt, brown sugar, cayenne, black pepper. oak coals and Adler to smoke. I pretty much barbecue or hot smoke in my smoker if I want it done in an hour. Otherwise it takes a bit more time.

Thanks for sharing your recipe.

Sounds like a pretty similar recipe, just my saltiness comes from the soy sauce instead of salt.  I vary the smokiness (and cook time) by either choking the coals so they cool off and smoke more, or letting them breath.

Making me hungry just thinking about it...

Recipes / Sweet n' Smoky Cedar Planked Salmon Filets

What's up guys?

Just wanted to share how I do up my salmon filets on the grill. I've been tweaking this recipe for a while, and I friggin love it...

This is written up in the order I do things... It works out about right to have the Q, plank, and filet all ready at about the same time.

1) Get your cedar plank soaking in water. About 1 hr before you plan to put the fish on the grill.

2) Also about 1 hr before grill time... Wet down the filet with soy sauce and rub with plenty of brown sugar, a pinch of cayenne pepper, pinch of garlic powder, and a little coarse ground black pepper. I also sprinkle the filet with sesame seeds for an extra little crunch. I cover that up and put it in the fridge until about 20 minute before grilling, when I take it out and put it on the counter.

2) Start your coals. Use real lump style hardwood, and start it without lighter fluid. Stay away from the chemical-tasting "briquettes" and lighter fluid mess...

3) Once the coals are going nicely, put your cedar plank on there for about 5 minutes. Then flip the plank (it should be a little toasted, but not fully charred).

4) Lay your filet on the plank right after you flip it, and cook until done (flaky). I like to keep the BBQ lid on, and keep the vents mostly closed. This helps give it that delicious smoky flavor.

That's about it.

If you try it, let me know what you think!

Cheers,

-Alex

Yeah... I'm kindof addicted to cedar planked salmon right now, and the freezer is running low. Need to score my salmon fix ;)

For anyone who needs a little more motivation:

Sunday: Variable winds 5 kt or less. Sunny. Mixed swell...WNW 4 to 5 ft and SSW 1 ft. Wind waves around 1 ft.

2378
Bummer, Raydon. Sounds like you need some redemption!

2379
Haha! Join the fun, Don!

The El Dorado 3 was also out off Marin today for 8 limits...

Time for that late-season push of BIG fish.

The Hawg Heaven, New Rayann, and Outer Limits caught a combined 61 salmon for 38 anglers on the Marin Coast today. :)

Pretty excited! The fish are definitely there. People are catching them on anchovies or WMAs between 20 and 45 feet down.

What's up NCKA?

Anyone interested in a hail mary ocean salmon attempt this Sunday? It sounds like there are still fish in the area; party boats are seeing about a fish per rod right near Duxbury buoy. I plan to launch from Bolinas at first light and get right to trolling (lots of it...). There is always the option for white meat consolation if things don't go according to plan.

Who's in?

General Fishing Tips / Re: kayak carrier

Yakima=round bars, Thule=square. On round bars the attached saddles, etc, can rotate some, with square they do not. The slight rotation can be helpful tho in some cases, such as on its edge the yak tapers to the front n rear so a shift in the saddle will match the contour. Just an FYI to think about.

This is true.

Another FYI - Round bars are inherently stronger than square (thus round tubes used for bikes, etc). Can't comment on whether Yakima or Thule bars are stronger. Bottom line is they are both plenty strong.

I recommend taking off the factory racks, getting some Yakima/Thule rack and putting your boat upside down on the crossbars.

Yes, this. Factory racks scare me... If your racks slide on side rails, I recommend the Yakima RailGrab mounts. Then just flop your boat on upside down (I don't use any sort of pad), strap it down with a couple ratchet tie downs, and your set.

I still stand by my opinion that neither of them legally landed that fish... That'd be like foul hooking a fish as a way to land it. Granted it wasn't the boaters intention, but intentions only go so far. He still didn't land the fish....

The fish was landed illegally, and therefore taking it (technically) was illegal.
