General Talk / Boycott Annie's brand food, please!
« on: September 10, 2014, 01:51:45 PM »
Hey everyone,

If you're like me and you enjoy healthy, organic, non-GMO food, you probably buy Annie's products from time to time. Mac and Cheese, salad dressings, cheddar bunny snacks, etc.

Well, Annie's just got bought out by General Mills; a company that has spent MILLIONS of dollars fighting against GMO labeling laws.

So... Even though Annie's CLAIMS that their recipes will not be changed, buying Annie's products will be giving money to General Mills... Money that will be used to keep us all in the dark about what's in our food.

Hope you can all join me in boycotting Annie's.

Please share this with anyone you know who might care.

Thanks for reading,

~Alex

General Talk / Re: Any last minute tips for fishing Lake Tahoe?
« on: August 29, 2014, 09:22:28 PM »
Thanks for the tips. How deep do the trout tend to hold this time of year? I assume up top early in the morning then down deep?

I don't have any Kokanee tackle. Or a downrigger.

General Talk / Any last minute tips for fishing Lake Tahoe?
« on: August 29, 2014, 05:08:27 PM »
What's up, guys?

I'm headed up to Lake Tahoe for the long weekend. I'll be staying at a buddies cabin near the s/sw side of the lake. Yaks and fishing gear will be brought.

Any last minute advice on launch spot and/or techniques?

My plan so far is to either troll a Kastmaster (with or without an egg sinker to get it down a little), or find a nice spot to soak/drift some bait... I've also got rapalas, spoons, spinners, etc... Just no downrigger or lead core line.

Thanks for any tips!

~Alex

Thanks for the report. Glad SOMEONE caught some fish yesterday.

This year has been tough for me on the chrome front... I'm still trying to get the skunk off my yak after more than a few solid attempts.

AlexB, I was just lucky. Were you able to get out there yesterday. I heard someone called out to a kayaker on channel 19 but I did not see any kayak there yesterday. I got on the radio and told them to call the kayaker on channel 69.

Yeah, I was out there with the fleet around Dux/Rocky Point yesterday. My launch and landing were uneventful, but it definitely took some patience to find the right lull.

I was having issues with my radio for about half the day. After a handful of radio checks on both 69 and 19, a friendly boater pulled up near me and said others could hear me, I just wasn't hearing their replies. Then out of nowhere my radio started working again later in the day.... Not exactly confidence inspiring.

Might be time to take my radio back to West Marine... Not sure if it's still under warrantee.

There's a good launch spot right down the street from Central Coast Kayaks.

Rockfish, lingcod, and halibut all prowl that area.

Good luck!

Another option would be to wrap yourself in a bright orange terry cloth towel, throw on a hardhat and safety glasses, troll the shoreline and see how many spinners you can catch. :)

General Fishing Tips / New to west coast looking for some tips

Welcome!

Check out the salmon fishing article here on NCKA.

http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?page=7

It'll tell you most of what you need to know. Other than that, it's all about putting in the time and mileage. Lots and lots of it.

Are you comfortable kayaking in the ocean? Do you have all your safety gear (PFD, marine radio, compass at a minimum)? If so, you should try to tag along on one of the various salmon fishing hookups along the Marin coastline.

Good luck!!!

General Fishing Tips / Advice for Leopard Sharks
« on: July 30, 2014, 12:24:06 PM »
I've caught several leopard sharks up to about 36 inches while halibut fishing around Morro Bay. I just lifted them up by the tail.

It's true that they aren't particularly toothy, but I did have an agro leopard bite my jacket and put a good hole in it one time... I imagine that would have hurt pretty bad if it got my skin.

Yup. Those are rissos.

Also, if you feel like doing some more reading about salmon fishing, check out this site:

http://www.salmonuniversity.com

It's geared more toward fishing in the pacific northwest, but the chinook ( or "blackmouth") techniques they describe will work down here, too.

This is a setup that works well. I use about 2-3 feet between the Double Deep 6 and the flasher, then 2-3 feet between the flasher and Rotary Salmon Killer (RSK) or Franco Bait Rotator (FBR). Since the spinning style flasher doesn't wobble around at all, you need a bait holder that gives the bait a spinning/rolling action.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: anchor vs drift sock or other??
« on: July 25, 2014, 07:02:17 PM »
I use that spool tension trick sometimes, but definitely miss some fish that way. A good percentage of bites happen on that first drop, so I like to have my rod in hand, and a finger on my line.

Before I got my Hobie, I wouldn't leave home without my drift sock (with anchor trolly). That was for my Scrambler XT (which likes to "tumble" instead of drift straight.

Like others said, using a hard anchor in the ocean is asking for trouble. I've even been jolted pretty good by the drift sock, but not as bad as it could be with a hard anchor.

I just have the small Hobie sock. Works well to slow your drift slightly, and keep your boat oriented how you want it. A bigger one would slow you more.

Keep in mind that a drift sock won't do you any good in current (it will actually PULL you). The drift sock slows you down when you're getting blown around, not pushed by current.

Nice! Welcome aboard!

No specific tips for that lake, but for Senkos I usually go with the bigger ones. If you're getting bites, you're already doing something right!
