General Fishing Tips / PSA - Inspect and adjust your Mirage Drive!
« on: August 11, 2016, 12:39:46 PM »
I'm in the process of replacing the chains and idler cable on my V2 Mirage Drive (both were showing rust where the cable was exposed), and I discovered that it was all way out of adjustment. I hadn't thought much of it until my last trip when I noticed significant "slop" in the pedals and saw that the idler cable was quite loose.

With the new parts installed and correctly adjusted, the drive feels like new.

Anyway... Just a friendly reminder to inspect and adjust your equipment. The Mirage Drive is a pretty robust piece of gear, but it shouldn't be ignored like I did for way to long...

Apparently there are a bunch of squid boats working off Lighthouse Point in Santa Cruz.

You know what that means!

General Fishing Tips / Last minute Chabot advice for kids?
« on: July 17, 2016, 07:03:28 AM »
What's up, guys?

We're taking the nephews shore fishing at Chabot today. Any last minute advice to give them something to pull on? Trout has been slow, but their planting catfish. I'm thinking it'll be best to keep it simple... Small hook, split shot(s), and a worm. Seems like that has the best chance at a panfish, catfish, trout... Hell even a sucker fish or carp would give them something to tug on.

Any advice for a fail-safe method to put kids on fish at Chabot?

Thanks in advance!

General Talk / Got a heavy duty rivet gun I can borrow?
« on: July 11, 2016, 08:02:41 AM »
Hey NCKA.

Anyone out there have a heavy duty rivet gun I can borrow? I'm liking for the two-handed style, like the pic below.

I need to set some closed-end aluminum pop rivets in my Gregor aluminum boat, and I don't think my little "standard" rivet gun is up for the task.

I'm in Oakland.

Thanks in advance!

Cheers,

Alex

What?!? Who needs a motor?

Well, I do...

I picked up a 12 foot Gregor aluminum for putzing around lakes and rivers, boat in camping, taking kids fishing, etc, etc... Now I just need a motor for it.

If you or someone you know has a 10-15 HP four stroke outboard they'd like to part with, please let me know.

Thanks!

~Alex

...don't fix it.

1) Grab a cracker.

2) Smear on some cream cheese.

3) Top with a chunk of freshly smoked salmon.

4) Chow.

5) Repeat.

Hey guys,

Up at Shelter Cove this weekend I discovered that the "basemap" on my new Lowrance Hook 5 is quite inaccurate. It was almost as if the whole map was shifted somehow. Large pinnacles shown on the chart plotter screen just didn't line up with reality as reported by the sonar. In several instances, the depth discrepancies between the two were in excess of 20-40 feet.

I'm curious which aftermarket map software is the most spatially accurate. I'm not really concerned about the minutia of 1' depth contours, but I would like a software package that shows depth contours and subsurface features that match up well with reality. If I point the bow at a pinnacle shown on the chart screen and peddle toward it, I'd like to see it show up on my sonar screen.

If I'm trolling for salmon in a rocky area, I want to be sure I raise my offering well above any pinnacles to avoid bait-steeling rockfish and snaggy kelp fronds. And when I target halibut I like to find areas where sand meets reef. Both would be MUCH easier if the chart plotter and sonar were in cahoots...

Thoughts? Recommendations?

Thanks,

Alex

General Fishing Tips / Silver Horde Figure 8 snaps..,
« on: March 26, 2016, 07:59:55 AM »
If you haven't discovered these little gems, you're missing out.

They're much easier to use than a duo lock snap, much stronger, and they last a WHOLE lot longer. Makes it REALLY quick and easy to change out flashers, weights, diving planes, droppers, lures, leaders, etc on the water.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Hobie thru hull cable fittings...
« on: March 10, 2016, 12:38:18 PM »
Quick question... Can I fit the transducer AND power cables for a Lowrance Hook 5  through one of Hobie's new thru-hull fittings?

I know that the thru hull kit includes rubber inserts made for passing two cables, but the cables on my new Hook 5 seem very fat... Much fatter than the cables of my old Mark 4. Just want to be sure they'll both fit before a I order the Hobie kit...

Anyone tried this yet?

Thanks,

Alex

What's up, guys?

I'm interested in picking up a good pair of binoculars at a reasonable price.

If you have a decent pair you aren't using, lemme know!

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Hole plugging...
« on: February 18, 2016, 07:34:24 AM »
What's the best way to plug a ~1" round hole left over from a FF cable pass through?

When I installed my FF a couple years ago I arranged it so the cable sticks out of the top in the gunwale. Bad idea - it's hard to keep the power/'ducer plug from getting bashed up when I load and unload the yak. I think all the plug actually got damaged to the point that it's causing some signal (and power) issues.

Plan is to buy a new Elite 5 and install it with the cable pass through in a better spot. Just need to plug the hole...

Does anyone know an easy way to plug a hole left behind by one of these:

General Fishing Tips / Anyone fished the HMB jetty lately?

I'm craving fresh rockfish...

Anyone fished the Half Moon Bay jetty lately?

Any other suggestions for shore rockfishing between, say, HMB and Jenner?

Thanks in advance!

General Talk / Thoughts on 2012-2014 Subaru Forester?
« on: December 28, 2015, 10:45:11 AM »
What's up, guys?

Well... Some asshat in a pink Dodge Challenger slammed into my 2006 Outback while it was parked outside my house, then took off. AAA says the car is totaled...

So I need a new car. I loved my '06 Outback, but I'm not at all impressed with the new roof rack system they introduced around 2010.

That leaves me pondering a Forester...

*Anyone out there drive a 2012 through 2014 Forester?

*Any experience with the oil consumption issue I've read about?

*Any general thoughts on the CVT transmission, if that's what you've got? (99% sure I'd opt for another manual, but curious anyway).

Any other random suggestions for an AWD/4WD car/SUV/whatever they're called these days? Ideally something with decent ground clearance. (It boggles my mind that they make cars that can't even hop a curb if needed...)

Thanks in advance for any thoughts/opinions/recommendations!

Cheers,

~Alex

General Talk / An 85 year old is out fishing...
« on: December 09, 2015, 08:57:35 AM »
...alone in his boat. He hears a thump on the deck and sees that a frog jumped in. To his amazement the frog speaks and says ".....If you kiss me, I will transform into a beautiful woman and be your bride.....". The fisherman is amazed and the frog repeats "....Kiss me  and I will transform into a beautiful woman.....". The old fisherman looks.....unbuttons and opens up his shirt pocket and starts to put the frog in. The frog exclaims "....didn't you hear me???? Kiss me and I transform into a beautiful lady!!!!". The old fisherman replies "....at my age I would prefer to have a talking frog....."
