General Fishing Tips / I want to catch a steelhead for my B-Day!
« on: November 16, 2012, 08:01:48 AM »
What's up NCKA?

My B-day is coming up, and I was just thinking about how LONG it's been since I've chased steelhead. I used to fish the Russian River for steelhead. That was some tough, slow fishing (for me, anyway), but SOO rewarding when you catch one of those beautiful fish.

Anyway, I'd like to take a steely chasing trip in early December. Anywhere is CA is fair game. Can you guys recommended a good spot for early Dec? CPR or legal take, kayak or non-yak (boulder hopping), doesn't much matter to me.

Thanks in advance!!!

General Fishing Tips / Best bait for dungies?
« on: November 08, 2012, 06:46:25 AM »
What's up NCKA? I'm just curious... what's your favorite bait for dungies? I've had good luck using chicken or turkey (necks, backs, and other cheap cuts). Also had good luck with rockfish carcasses, but I don't have any of those around right now.

Thoughts?

What's up NCKA?

I'll be out at Muir Beach next Sat (11/10) dropping some crab pots and doing some fishing. Maybe I'll even try for my hail Mary salmon before the season ends...

Come on out if you don't have plans!

General Fishing Tips / Salmon trolling rig questions...
« on: September 12, 2012, 10:08:33 AM »
So I need to re- tie a couple RSK's and I've got a question... I understand that for mooching, you cannot use a sliding hook. Is that also the case while trolling, or could I re-tie my RSK's with a sliding hook (barbless single of course)?

How do you re-tie your RSKs when the cheap-ass stock hooks rust out?

What's up everyone?

I'm super determined to get my first kayak salmon. Last weekend, I feel like I gave it a really solid try. Conditions were super rough and windy and I didn't even get a tap, but I feel good about it. I presented a nice-looking trolled anchovy to miles and miles of water between Muir and Stinson. My trolling technique is getting dialed in, my arms are feeling strong, and I'm ready to do it again.

I very well may be able to hit the water again this Sunday, and I wanted to put the feelers out to see if anyone else might be interested.

Any interest out there?

The gate opened at about 7:30 last Sat, but I'm working on convincing my girlfriend to drop me at the gate and wait it out :). Just going out on a limb here, but if that happens, I'm sure she wouldn't mind reparking another car or two when the gate opens.

Details to come...

Whats up everyone?
I'm planning to hit Muir Beach on Saturday morning. I plan to troll for salmon until I don't feel like it anymore (or get my limit :)), then retreat inshore and toss swim baits for whatever's hungry...

Anyone interested?

Weather looks doable for a Muir Beach launch this Saturday.  Who's interested?

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Anyone use Garmin's Blurchart G2 maps?
« on: July 31, 2012, 08:39:27 AM »
I just picked up a Garmin ETrex 20 the other day, and I'm looking to install some charts... Has anyone used Garmin's BlueChart G2 maps? Just wondering how helpful they are, and whether they have enough resolution/acuracy to be worthwhile in our nearshore adventures...

General Fishing Tips / Nets for Salmon
« on: July 25, 2012, 02:49:23 PM »
Question from a relative salmon noob...

I read somewhere that you are actually REQUIRED to have a net on board when salmon fishing. Is that true? I prefer gaffs, myself. If I catch something I'm not SUPER confident is big enough, I either lift by the leader, lip, or gill plate.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Depth Charts for my Garmin eTrex 20?
« on: July 25, 2012, 10:25:31 AM »
Hey everyone!

Just wondering if anyone has found a way to load some pacific ocean depth contours to your Garmin GPS without spending hundreds of dollars?

Anything available for free download?

Hobie Kayaks / Trolling with Mirage Drive
« on: July 23, 2012, 04:56:35 PM »
Hey everyone,
I'm starting to save my pennies for an Outback with Mirage Drive, and I've got a question about trolling.

I notice when I troll with the rod tip off one side of my yak, I get a VERY lopsided workout. What I'm wondering is whether the that's also the case with Mirage Drive, or whether the rudder alDlows you to pump evenly with your left and right legs, and go straight.

This isn't gonna be a deal breaker, but I'm still curious.

What's up everyone? I'm dying to take my first stab at yak fishing for salmon, and I've got the weekend of the 28th free.

Is anyone goin out to Monterey that weekend? I'd love to tag along. I'll be driving out from the East Bay Friday evening and hopefully camping out somewhere near the launch.

Can't wait!!!

Hey everyone,
My beach wheels finally DID show up, so I think I'm going to hit Muir again next Saturday.  I'd like to supplement my freezer-load of halibut with some rockfish (and more halibut). The tentative plan is to launch around 6:30 or so and fish mostly along the south edge of the beach.

So who's interested?

~Alex

I just ordered a set of beach wheels, and I figured what better way to try them out than a nice lug across the beach at Muir?

I'm planning to launch early and fish outside a bit until the wind chases me back inside. Then I'll fish the sandy areas in about 30 feet of water and hopefully score my first flatty of the season.

Anyone else gonna be out there? I'll be on CH. 69.
