General Talk / Re: Snow / sledding for younger kids?

Thanks for the replies, we're probably headed out tomorrow 3/30, loading up the van tonight and make the final decision on where to go in the morning.

General Talk / Snow / sledding for younger kids?
« on: March 28, 2023, 01:03:32 PM »
I realize this is not fishing or kayak related, but was thinking some of the members that live in the Sierras might have some valuable local input.
I am thinking of taking my 4yr and 9yr old daughters up to do some mild sledding and general fun in the snow.  Looking for a spot thats not too crowded or extremely steep, and preferably free.
Right now I am thinking of one of the trailheads in the emigrant gap area, but figured it would be good to reach out for local advice with regards to current conditions.
FWIW we will be in our awd minivan and have our own gear.
Thanks in advance, Allen

Even the motorized AI is hard to troll at 8mph. Plus the weather is not looking too good. It is probably a lot easier to take the kayak down south now and try.
^^^ this.    Based on reports I have been seeing, there is a real chance at finding BFT within 10mi of launch in socal right now.  + the weather looks alot more friendly

I thought it might be a good idea to post up a little reminder about using a quick release anchor system (QRAS). I don't recall seeing the  thread bumped up yet this year, but a quick search shows lots of great ideas on this essential piece of safety equipment & the reasons why its so important.
The delta can be very dangerous & yet seem deceivingly calm.
Good luck on the dino hunt!

General Fishing Tips / Re: Reel Upgrade advice
« on: December 17, 2020, 12:45:55 PM »
If this is your first conventional / baitcaster type reel I recommend getting a level wind, it's just one less thing to keep track of while fighting a fish.
Another thing to seriously consider is right or left hand retrieve.  I fished with spinning reels for +20 yrs before using a conventional reel and it was more difficult than I anticipated to switch hands. I am more comfortable now, but all the reels I own are still left hand retrieve and I only use "standard" right hand retrieve reels when going for albacore on my buddys boat. I really dislike the right hand retrieve on the kayak. Your experience may be different.
In terms of low profile vs conventional, the low profile Coldwater is much more ergonomic & easier to use for long periods of time especially for applications like jigging, albeit at a slightly higher price. I have had my low profile Coldwater for 4yrs now and other than the line counter not always being accurate it has performed great, despite being thru a few surf  launch / landings and a couple yard sales.
Having said that I still highly recommend the tekota despite the extra cost, it is a pleasure to fish with.

I have a cold water and it has treated me well, but I have also heard of others with bad experiences. For a budget reel I would look at the diawa sealine. I have a couple that I use as loaners and they seem to be a good value.
At around $200 the Shimano tekota is more expensive than you were looking to spend, but is far above the others in terms of quality and is my favorite reel for salmon.

Have you considered lake Hennessy in Napa county? It's alot closer to Sebastopol and has a 10hp limit on motor boats so is usually peaceful. Not sure about its status since the fires either though.

Haven't been there for a long time, since before the drought nearly dried it up a few years back, but I have seen some nice rainbows come out of IVR. Any idea of how access is since the last couple fires?

I’m pretty sure we can all share a body of water. Just because someone’s been fishing a spot for decades doesn’t give them the right to reserve that spot for themselves. I’ve been to Bodega And HMB during a hot salmon bite with Tons of boatS and kayakers in the mix and everyone was civil. Boaters were stoked when kayakers caught fish and vice versa. We were dodging each other carefully while trolling with no issues. It all comes down to mutual respect.

You're missing the point. Sharing a spot is one thing. Blowing it open on the internet for the whole fishing word to see is very different, and that's when this new hostility began. When someone comes in with a GoPro - someone who hasn't fished here for decades and hasn't made the effort to get to know people and earn their trust - and posts the f***ing location and "halibut frenzy" in the video's title, that is a problem and it is going to tick off the locals who have kept it quiet for decades.

TLA's videos don't get enough views to make him rich or famous, but they get enough to burn spots and cause friction with the locals. And the unfortunate irony is that it probably won't be his tires that will get slashed. He'll be off blowing up some other spot that day.
Really?
It seemes like people that were already pissed about the halibut vids can't wait to blame them for this.
The problem is that no one was fishing for halibut, and I don't think that +1yr old video of halibut sent a buch of people out to troll for salmon.
Dux is one of the best known salmon spots outside the gate, and definitely no secret, party boats post up their success all the time.
If that guy was upset about those halibut vids he sure waited for a long time.
As for people on NCKA pissed about the vids, I get it, but again where are all these guys "blowing up the halibut" all I see are people hunting chrome.

I'm not a huge fan of youtube vids, but I'd just like to point out that every time I have been to Bolinas everyone is targeting salmon and halibut is an afterthought when the wind picks up. For all the talk about spot burning I don't recall a huge flood of hali reports since those vids were put up, just typical tough days trolling for salmon, sprinkled with some hogs.  Just sayin'

Safety First / Re: Why not to use mono from kayak
« on: May 17, 2020, 06:43:56 AM »
I run 30lb mono on several of my rods, the technique Crash described works very well. If a swell does not lift enough to overcome the stretch, then directly over the snag start paddling away rapidly. Once you gain enough momentum repeat the technique described, being sure your line is pointed over the bow or the stern and not over the side. This technique is particularly suited for a pedal kayak but will also work paddling.
I like to pedal in reverse with the line wapped around bonker, or thumb the spool and pointed in front of me over the bow.

General Talk / Re: List of fishing sites that are open and closed.

Lake county sheriff just issued an announcement that closes all the lakes in the county, including Clear Lake, Blue Lakes, Lake Pillsbury, Indaian Valley Reservoir, Highland Springs Reservoir, and any public navigable waterway.

Between my buddy and myself we have 2 outbacks, 2 revos, 1 PA 14 and 1 oasis.
By far the outbacks see the most time otw.
