Time to put out the feelers. Who is seriously considering going in 2017? Not interested in the "There's a slight chance I may go" crowd. We need solid numbers for planning purposes.

Cheers!

**Poll added. Note - Approx. price references are last year's prices and may be more this year.

**NEW POLL added. Note - Price references are this year's prices and are more this year.

The trip (tripS?) will more than likely (meaning 95%) be in June. If we only do one trip my vote would be for the end of June. If we can swing two trips then my vote would be for one the first week and one the last week of June.

personally don`t care 2.5 or 3.5.... I just want to know the deposit amount.. I`ll  get it in   :smt112

You might see turtles.  Sea turtles.  Just a heads up.  Don't want you to get triggered.

I really wish I could make this work, I look at the trip reports every time, looks like so much fun..I just have no idea how I could swing it.  It might be one of those ask for forgiveness instead of permission deals and just pull the trigger.  WAF account be damned.

I saw a sea turtle last year. Scared me at first!  BIG.

Please have your wife give me a call, I can explain how this trip can benefit you both immensely.  don't let her talk to my wife, though....

I wish I could.. my health is getting better, my doctor gave me the go-ahead to start high intensity exercise in safe places (like at home) but I'm not sure I will be healthy in time for the trip. I don't want to bail like I did last year.

Have fun!

Yeah, I couldn't see the poll on tapatalk either.  Probably because this poll feature is not something found across all forums so Tapatalk doesn't offer it.

As I have no horse in the game this year due to building a new home in the spring. If I were to sign up it would be for as long a trip as possible. After attending the Cedros trip I would vote for that trip again. With all the planning, traveling, lodging, costs it only makes sense to go for as long a trip as possible. Yes, the increased costs for a longer trip would hold some back but in my opinion it would average out money wise. Just my two cents. Whatever you boys decide....have fun.

Just for fun go back and read the 2009 Cedros trip report....

Just keep an eye on this or any future Islander threads. It's still early in the game. Within the next month or so we should have some more info and may possibly start taking deposits.

La Nina or El Nino ... we've seen it all on the San Clemente trips.  All were still good.

There are some logistical and cost issues with going further south.  The trip is priced for a San Clemente run.  Any longer run and I would expect the price to change accordingly.  Fuel costs are the largest component of the pricing.

Further south at the time of year we go would likely mean more wind.  We have explored another Cedros trip, but 1) can't seem to get enough to go on a 5 day trip, 2) even if we did, 2 of the days would be spent travelling, and 3) we keep getting warned that we could easily be blown out.

If you have the itch to get into more yellowtail, I would suggest booking a charter boat trip before or after this trip.  Best of both worlds?

La Nina or El Nino ... we've seen it all on the San Clemente trips.  All were still good.

This is exactly why I love Islander trips so much.

2013 - 2.5 day trip:
Some of us had been on a prior Islander trip, but for the most part we are San Clemente Island fishing rookies. We end up catching a great variety of fish. Halibut up to 25lbs, some really nice calico bass, sheepshead, whitefish, a fat WSB, and a big ass thresher.

2014 - 3.5 day trip:
This is trip number three for a few of us, but we are still trying to get a lay of the land and figuring out how to fish each area of the island; some of which are new to us this year. The first two days were slow. The third day was filled with an unreal sheepshead and calico bite deep in the kelp. The word epic is thrown around a lot but that third day we were on a truly epic bite.

2015 - 2.5 day non-NCKA trip:
Polepole and I are now SCI vets and have a pretty good idea of what we're doing and how to fish each section of the island. We both end up with a handful of rat yellowtail and ended the trip with another really good calico and sheepshead bite. Others on the trip caught some nice halibut, YT, and a WSB or two.

2016 - 3.5 day trip:
Our first time getting into a nice YT bite. We have a steady pick for all three days. Some really nice fish are caught and even more hooked and lost. We end the trip with 90+ YT.

2016 - 2.5 day trip:
Pretty much wide open YT and bonito bite.

Every single trip has been a blast for different reasons. And that's just the fishing aspect of the trip. Add to that a lot of great food, drinks, and friendship and you can see why some of us hop on these trips every year.

Just curious, how many anglers will the Islander accommodate comfortably?
I have put together 15 long range trips, but this will be my first mothership.
Do we need Mexico permits, if so, are they included?
Some boats charge for soda/water, and some have free fountain for both, which is avail?
Can we bring our own alcohol (within limits)?
what is the normal % to tip the crew on this trip?
Sorry for all the questions, but just want to be sure and be well prepared

Great questions. See below.

Just curious, how many anglers will the Islander accommodate comfortably?
33 anglers. But our trips are never more than 24 anglers because they can only take 22 kayaks. Two people per stateroom is the norm.

I have put together 15 long range trips, but this will be my first mothership.
Do we need Mexico permits, if so, are they included?
No Mexico permits needed, but you will need an Ocean Enhancement Stamp.

Some boats charge for soda/water, and some have free fountain for both, which is avail?
The Islander has free soda and water from the fountain.

Can we bring our own alcohol (within limits)?
We have in the past, but they REALLY frowned upon it last year due to recent boardings and inspections.

what is the normal % to tip the crew on this trip?
Whatever you feel comfortable with. If you go back and read anything Islander related on any website or forum, the one thing that you will notice mentioned again and again is how awesome the crew is and how hard they work to make everything damn near perfect. I have no problem handing them my whole jackpot winnings when I'm fortunate enough to pull that off.

Sorry for all the questions, but just want to be sure and be well prepared

I'm in for July, but can't make June (end of quarter).

I have a Mazda CX5 with roof rack and trailer that can carry 3 yaks if anyone wants to carpool.

Forgive the noob question, but I'm assuming we sleep on the Mothership and paddle out to fish and can fish from the mother ship?

I have sleep apnea and have a portable battery, but do they have power to recharge the battery?

I see the CPAP life chose you too! My portable battery lasts about 2 nights but there should be power outlets! All the boats I've been on have had power outlets.

We try to book as late in the season as possible, but for the last few years the Islander folks have only been running kayak trips in June.

Yes to sleeping on the mothership, etc. You can fish from the big boat, but the current captain/owner doesn't seem to park the boat in as fishy of spots as the previous captain did. However, the pic above is of Reelknots with a monster BSB hooked and released from the boat earlier this year on our 3.5 day trip.

Yes, all staterooms have power outlets.

I think last year's method of assigning rooms has gone smoother than any other year.  We used to just allow a free for all at the boat.  Now we just have a bit of random assignment with user input.   Like if you are super susceptible to sea sickness, we'll put you mid-boat.  Or if you want to bunk with someone special, obviously we'll hook you guys up.  If you have a preference for a room, just send us a note and we'll see if we can do anything about it.

When I was setting up long range trips, we would have them scheduled a year ahead and filled at least 6 months ahead.

Joe's account of landing the only WSB on an NCKA Islander trip.

Second day I decided to dedicate to kayak fishing. My second drop of the day was when I felt the pull of something big! Bam,bam and the line started to peel. It felt like the fish was going in circles around a column of kelp because I could see and feel the line moving in circles. I just maintained my composure and focused on not breaking off this fish. After about 25 minutes I could not feel a fish on the end of my line anymore........My last resort would be to cut some kelp with the with the line and try to break free. I released my kelp clip, pointed the Hobie towards the open ocean and started pedaling like a madman! I finally feel the kelp break free and a dead weight on the line.
At about 15ft I see color, white, I had no idea what it was. Kiel says "WSB bro!" We team up and land the fish. This was my first WSB and on the Islander trip! Thanks Kiel!
I caught it with a 6oz Scrambled egg yoyo jig w/ two live squid pinned on the treble. Lucky13 has named this setup a "Squid Orgy!"

I have good news and bad news.  The bad news is, Islander owners are upping the price on kayak fishing trips. With increased maintenance costs of these trips, they figured out they are not quite breaking even, hence the rates are going up.

Good news is, they still love us, so their 2017 calculations are 'bare bones' according to their needs.  they also appreciate the business early in the season prior to their summertime run of offshore trips with stand-up anglers.  We can fit only 22 yakkers on the boat whilst the stand-ups go 28.

So pricing estimate on the previous poll was inaccurate.  I took that poll down and will post a new poll.  this means we may cut down to only one trip in June, instead of two as we enjoyed last year. Vote now lwts get a good idea of wheee we all stand so we can book if we're gonna.

2.5 day:   $875
3.5 day:   $1225

Don't want talk bad, but that is what the Intrepid  and the Independence charges for a 4 day which includes everything. I've seen the Islander and can honestly say it's not even in the same game as boats charging this price. I would love to join the group on this, but I'm going to have to think real hard about spending that much for this trip.

With Kayaks?  Really? Maybe we should book with one of those elite boats! ( I was under the impression the Islander was the only bigger off shore boat that took kayak trips.)

Islander charges less (per person) for non-kayak trips also.  Boat is still same $$ for each day, but they can take more people if they don't have kayaks and all the related gear.  Just math.

Well, you're correct, they don't do yaks.
Although the Intrepid is 116ft and and only takes 25 anglers.
Again, not wanting to down the Islander, but they are a little over the top on the price above. Especially after figuring in transportation, lodging, tip, extra gear needed etc.
I'm still interested in going, but like I said, I'll have to think a little harder about the $$$ involved.

Ya know? Thinking about this price increase, I have considered the following;

For $875 -
- I could buy a round trip plane ticket to Hawaii or Cabo = $$$
- I may have $500+ left over for food, lodging, island travel, boat ride etc. = not enough $$$
- I probably need more like $1500 + to make it doable with enough time and extras?
- I won't have my kayak or fishing gear (unless I opt to drive 1337 miles and 33.5 hours to Cabo, then back)?
- I won't have a guide unless I know someone, or hire one???
- I (probably) won't be able to bring any fish home?

but, "if"? I go Islander again for 2.5 days (guaranteed) -

- I get a guided boat ride to and from San Clemente island
- I get a stateroom for 2+ days
- I get 3 meals per day
- Bait and beer if I want (No host?)
- Freezer storage and cleaning (add $$ tip for cleaning) for the fish I catch
- Comraderie with like minded souls of NCKA
- I will have to pay for parking (shared $$)
- Driving expenses to and from the Central Coast
- I catch exotic fish that I usually don't have access to.
- $$ Tip for the crew, "if?" I choose.
- I'm retired, so for me it's doable  :smt007!

Just sayin', nuff said.

For $875 (ea), if you don't need to be pampered, would more than cover a ten day trip to Baja.  Don't dead head to Cabo, camp along the way at different spots on the Sea of Cotez and Mag Bay.

This is an excellent post! I was gonna simply say that in the past, I would've factored a $150-200 dollar tip, plus beer tab. So the new prices are only a little more than that #. I think I tipped 500+ for last years 3.5 day but that included my day 3 jackpot winnings. The price jump is a bumer, but it's a pretty special experience.

I just poached this from the BWE board.

Islander Owner's response to a member's inquiry as to whether they could sponsor a raffle.

Hi Jim,
Thank you for contacting us. Unfortunately at this time we do not have any kayak trips scheduled. We're not sure if these will be moving forward anymore….I can let you know when/if we book any for the summer. Best of luck to you and your tournament….

We would like to continue the kayak trips but sadly can't afford to at our past price point. We priced them very low from the beginning to build the business, but the wear and tear on our boat eats up more in repairs than the miniscule amount we were taking home. We spent a small fortune last year to paint the boat which was finished right before our first kayak trip. After 5 trips of kayaks slamming against the side, the paint job was thrashed. This, coupled with many other expenses pertaining only to kayak fishing (replacing outboards, fixing skiffs, etc.) means we need to raise prices significantly in order to continue and as yet, the kayak fishermen are not willing to pay it. I'll let you know if anything changes.
Best,
Juliet

All kidding aside, I'd still really like to go this year considering it could be the last time we ever get the chance to do it.

Figures - after all these trips I finally buy a live-bait tank and some Islander specific gear and now it looks like these trips will soon be a thing of the past.

If it works out I may be interested in a 2.5 day trip. if there is any way to make it fall on a weekend that works even better.

Ya know? Thinking about this price increase, I have considered the following;

For $875 -
- I could buy a round trip plane ticket to Hawaii or Cabo = $$$

I got no skin in this game, but I'm thinking why don't you guys organize a trip to fish La Jolla?  June is my favorite month for LJ as the pelagics start to show but the reef and kelp species are also at their strongest.  You guys can stay at the same hotel and while you may not have 3 meals made for you daily, you have the option to drive not too far in any direction for some excellent food.  With enough guys on the water, you can fan out and hunt in wolf packs north, south and west.

I've fished La Jolla a few times, and while it's a really cool place to fish, it's nothing like fishing San Clemente Island. There's way more options at SCI.

It's interesting how our perspectives are shaped.  I'm sure I have dive buddies that feel the same and it's probably true.

Whatever happens, I hope you guys get the trip you want.

I'd rather fish La Jolla than pretty much anywhere else in CA, and I still don't think it's anything close to an Islander trip. Just the whole mothership aspect of it is what makes it so great. If the bite is slow or the wind is blowing too hard you can pack everyone up and move to the calm side of the island. If the YT aren't biting you can almost always scratch up a stellar calico bite. Or if the halibut aren't biting you can move in and target monster goats. If you aren't connecting on the WSB you're looking for you can always drop down some squid and wrangle up some whitefish.....or troll for threshers. Hell, I'd hop on an Islander trip just to catch bonito on lite line.

Plus, I'm not sure there's too many people who have caught nine yellowtail over a two day period at La Jolla. I did it fairly easily last year at SCI.

And that's just the fishing!!

I'm gonna go cry somewhere now... :smt010

I understand.  I have friends that can limit out on big YT off pinnacles of SCI.  But just as often, their reports can be dismal and often not as good as local inshore.  Or the navy closes off certain areas even though the weather is perfect.

And because I've never done a trip (kayak mothership) like these, I can't knowledgeably speak on it; however, I can totally understand having a group of friends together on a boat sharing the experience.

That being said, here are some things I've actually done in LJ and nearshore.  I think it's a worthy consideration especially when the cost of the boat is getting prohibitive.

June is my favorite month for big LJ.  The schools of mackerel stream in followed by YT.  The biggest YT I ever encountered was at the bottom on the edge of the kelp.  I would hesitate to guess on weight as even close friends look at me with a disbelief.  But the CA record for speared YT came from LJ, in June I believe.

And while I don't know the numbers of YT caught over two days, but I know of guys that have caught multiple BIG YT over the course of days.

With the mackerel there could be bonito and barracuda depending on water temp, but their presence wouldn't be uncommon.  I've seen bonito schools so thick that I would string 3 bonito with one shot.  Then I try to hand feed the giant BSB that come to investigate the sound of my gun going off.  I've had them try to swallow my speared WSB.  They are thugs.

The grumpy sand bass are usually clustered on the bottom 20' of the kelp edge with the females looking very swollen and laden with roe.  There are what I call calico trees which are clusters of kelp stalks that hide hundreds of calicos.  I don't like hunting for halibut.  I don't like staring at sand.

There are depth ledges in the canyon where I've caught limits of vermillions.  Every single fish was a verm.  Most not big.

This doesn't happen every year, but given a "normal" year, I can expect at least some of these aspects.

Another fun and under reported fishery are the bone fish at the back of SD bay.  There is a launch ramp in Chula Vista that is very close to the fishing grounds.  Wife and I caught 7 bonefish up to 1.5lbs in under 3 hours, and we didn't have electronics or otherwise know what we were doing.  Then a lunch at one of many excellent Mexican joints in CV.

This is the first year I've missed diving socal.  I might manufacture enough enthusiasm to do a trip this June.

Nate

Or how about taking kayaks over to the northern Channel islands on Island Packers out of SB?

Just heard from my buddy Jim down south. He is a big part of the kayak scene down there. The Islander told him they are probably not moving forward with any motherships. He sent me their message to him...these are some partial quotes of a text the Islander sent him...he copied it to me directly from the message they sent Him.

"Not sure if moving forward anymore"

"Wear and tear on the boat eats up more repairs"

"kayak fishermen are not willing to pay"

They even mentioned "replacing outboards".  How the heck was that any of us kayakers fault. It was the deckhands fault...not following the Captain's specific directions to connect the safety cable...which they didn't.

GREAT NEWS.  Jims friend  is in the process of setting up Cedros trips. Fully guided. Fly into Cedros, lodge on the island, and includes fully rigged Hobie Outbacks. As soon as I get the full details I will post here.

Yeah, so the skinny on Islander I get is this:  owner says he has been uderpricing drastically for years.  une is typically a slow monthfor the boat, and others advised me he also ran yak trips to "keep" his deckhands.  He charges a lot more for his shark trips (but they have to tavel), and charges more for his regular fishing tripsthough individual pricing maybe less due to increased # of anglers they can take for fishing off the boat only.

He cites 30% of his exterior maintenance costs come from the few yak trips they have been running.  Rack need to be rebuilt, they lost an engine last year (puzzling why he included that cost in explanation, considering one of his deckhands dropped the motor off the back of the Zodiac.  "did you attach the safety Line?.......Uh, No.")

Third party hinted to me the deckhand "Don't Like" to do yak trips.  Too hard.  (I seem to remember them as loving us, and loving the fact they had hours and hours to actually fish while we were all out yakfishing).

John is a great guy, and it's a great boat.  But, for this year we are going to decline booking a June trip.  There are a couple other possibilities we're looking into, including boats embarking from Santa Barbara or Oxnard. fising the Main Channel Islands.  That means 1/2 the drive and no LA trafffic.

Great times and great memories, and more good times ahead.  Promise.

I don't believe he was blaming kayakers for the loss of the outboard engine, probably referring to the expense of replacement. They probably don't use the outboard for fishing-from-boat trips.

Other than raising or lowering kayaks and filling bait tubes, the crew spent a lot of time just lounging against the back rail or fishing.

And, as one who just went for a boat ride, I left a very good tip even though I did not think the meals were that great. Only thing I regret is taking a nap during the time Kiel reeled in the black sea bass.

I would have considered another boat ride, at the previous prices, for another photo encounter with the Navy gunboats.  :smt004

I'm going on an 8 day trip this year, then.

Either on the Excel or Royal Polaris.

If the Islander would've raised their prices by 25% for the next year or two I woulda been all good with that, but to increase prices by 50% in one season is insane.

I was talking to Captain/owner John last year on our 3-day trip and even though he denied it, you could tell that he was kind of over the whole kayak mothership thing. I'm wondering if it's because Shane was bought out and Jason bailed, so now John is left as the main captain for all these trips.

I would consider the Excel trip. The Royal Polaris trip is too close to my annual trip in July. It's also more fun when you know someone on the boat.

OK, first - thanks bushy and Jason for trying to get a mothership trip out of the harbor this year.

Second - a Royal Polaris trip is something I have had on my bucket list for years. Maybe this IS the year?

Third - I've been reading (books on tape checked out from the local library) some of Clive Cussler's Oregon series (fiction). The Oregon is a fictitious tramp freighter, which is disguising a very modern destroyer platform under its apparently decaying outer personage. It allows the Oregon a disguise to enter various ports o' call around the globe relatively unnoticed. One of the "features" of the Oregon is a "moon pool" which ejects divers (in small teams) using inflatables, launching from within the hold, out a side door at the waterline from the main hull. It comes to mind that a tender with this capability would be a perfect platform for island trips for launching and retrieving kayaks . Any body got one?

Yeh, with either of these choices(?), it would take a pretty hard knock to chip the paint with a piece of Tupper ware tethered to the side. At least with most of these bigger boats, the births and galley would probably(?) be a bit more comfortable, not sure about a British boat however?

I'm of the opinion that it's a pretty poor marine finish that is wrecked by plastic kayaks.  :smt012

B-Rad Here. When will this be? I am trying to schedule out my NCKA events for the year and an Alaska trip. Please let me know ASAP.  I am in for a 2.5 day trip. Thanks.

We have decided not to run Islander trips this year.  The price increase was just too much.
