Pfd, knife, wheels, vhf, boots, balaclava, flare, net, and more to come.

Use the search, there’s tons of threads here that provided lists of what to have. But all those r not enuf if u don’t practice self-rescue

Can't buy self rescue

There are classes that you can take. So yes you can buy it.

It should be the most important thing on your list.

I appreciate the responces though I should have been more clear.  i am looking for used gear for purchase and or make / model questions.  I've read through the posts regarding what to have on the water and it has helped me compile list.
Lots great info and experience on this sight.

I think it’s a good idea to start out with used gear. That’s what I did too. I waited for the annual used kayak & gear sale @ Monterey Bay Kayaks and got most of ny stuff for cheap (paddles, wetsuits, pfds, dry pants for like $25 each). So thats another thing to consider...most kayak shops have a big sale once or twice a year. They won’t have all the stuff on your list though.
For the wetsuit, look at the REI outlet site and Sierra Trading Post for clearance sales—the NRS farmer johns are usually a good value. And don’t forget a paddling jacket to keep you dry on top—can find em on sale for like $50. If you get some paddling pants, you can wear them over the farmer john and it’s like a poorman’s drysuit (or even cheap rainpants).
For the cart, everybody is gonna say get the Wheeleez. But it depends if you plan to use it on sandy beaches...if not, then you can get away with regular cart. I saw some Wheeleez in the classifieds here for $175 which is a good deal. The secret trick is to check CL for people selling a kayak & cart package and offer to just buy the cart...that’s worked twice for me in the past.
Bilge pumps are cheap, but a very helpful item to have in case your or someone else’s kayak is flooded. Just stash it inside the hull each trip.
I’m a fan of the bigass net, like a big salmon net. Even though it can act like a sail when it’s windy. Nothing fancy needed, just a big ass salmon net (if going out in the ocean).
Deck compass is helpful but not necessary for me. I DO have a small compass in my pfd pocket but there’s also gos in my FF and on my phone (also have a free app on my phone that tracks my course in case I need to navigate back in fog or with dead FF battery, its called Map my Ride). For deck compasses though, the Richie brand is solid.
For gaff, you want something in the 18-30” range (shorter than most boat gaffs). I prefer the traditional j-hook but some guys here use an L-shaped slap gaff. Make sure it floats!
