The Gates/Locks

Their are two locks or "gates" that provide a barrier between the Sacramento River and the Deep water channel "the port".  As you launch from the public ramp, if you look to the right you will see the gates about  fifty yards or so down the channel.  Since it creates basically a dead end for the deep water channel, it creates a blockade that most migrating fish end up at.  For this reason it is a common spot to fish for migrating fish like Salmon.  It is also a decent spot to drop bait and wait for fish cruising the end for locked in bait.  For Salmon the most popular spot is right in the center where there is a small gap which allows variable amounts of water to flow through depending on the tide levels.  Since it is the only current, the Salmon often bunch up there sitting in the current.  If you have a tube or hit the tides right, you can slide between the wooden braces and go to the back of the gates and fish the farthest corners where they often get stuck.  Watch out for the water levels as it will often drop up to 8 feet.  For Stripers, the best spot is to set yourself up in one of the corners and either drop bait waiting for the fish that generally cruise up the sides of the steep walls.  There are a few rubbish piles under the bridges where you can often find crappies suspended over them.  Bass tend to cruise along the walls at the opposite end of the walls where they begin.  There are also some old pilings which concentrate crappie and bass.  Setting up along the wall with a minnow is very effective.  Artificials thrown in the pockets and around the pilings works pretty good as well.

Hey steveislost, thanks for the tips at this spot. Question. Is there any way for a bank fisher to get close to the "Gates" close to the red and blue areas (striper and Salmon). If not, where would be the best area in this port for bank fishing (specifically plunking or running lures/spinners) Thanks in advance

Uh, dude Steve is Lost in Florida now so he might not respond to those questions. That post is shy of 4 years old.

Best spot for spinner bank fisherman is on the concrete wall on north side of locks

Keep in mind, if your respect for the authority of fences is at a low point, there are a bunch of local guys who hop fences and either climb onto the structure of the lock itself and fish downward, or hang out on the concrete wall. The downside is (besides risking arrest) that if you DO hook something, you are still 10'-12' off of the water.. One local dude (who is ALWAYS there) uses a ring crab pot as a net, to get under the fish and lift it up... Hellllllll of a lot easier to fish it with a kayak/float tube/pontoon boat.. :smt003
Let me explain something to you. Um, I am not "Mr. Lebowski". You're Mr. Lebowski. I'm the Dude. So that's what you call me. You know, that or, uh, His Dudeness, or uh, Duder, or El Duderino if you're not into the whole brevity thing.

Went out Sat morning.... Go at first light... Stripers boiling all over the barge canal. Sure only 8-10 inchers. but if you can get a bait  below the dinks (hard!) big ones lurking! Cast to the center of a boil. Fun even at 8". Striper = fight on!!!
Come on out! It's time to play. It's time for TROUT Bass and STRIPER. Let go of the hand brake!

Depends on the time of year. It is kind of a dead end.

It's a dead end at the lock end, and in the depths of summer, with the pollen on top of the water, and the wind blowing the pollen and floating detritus down into the dead end, it can be something like the paddling in the garbage chute scene from Star Wars... But the pollen clears up with colder temps and anytime of the year, you can always paddle away from the locks and it totally clears up. Once you get under the Lake Washington bridge (next to the loading docks,) and in the influence of the winds over the turning basin, it's just like any other water in the Delta.  :smt003
