Title: Perchin it
Post by: Bulldog---Alex on December 16, 2017, 01:21:00 PM
Finally had some time to hit the beach. Was only able to fish about an hour at high tide  before it became to windy and rough surf. Managed one with a few other big hits

It's starting to pick up here in the Monterey bay. Lots of little ones before the king tides stirred things up.

Nice catch.

I’ll be in Aptos December 23-25 if anyone wants to fish stripers with me. I’m not up there often enough to know where to go.  PM me!

Drop you a line if I am in the area. Otherwise good luck. Out of the loop for area's hitting stripers.

That fish only measured 11.5 inches but fought like a bull in some rough current. I was having to cast far to my right because of the wind and current would bounce my rig far to my left. Trying for Thursday , ( Friend from works day off ) but its a later high tide and the wind has been up. Not a big fan of heavier weights either.

Nice one, Alex.

I hit the surf last week for nada. Conditions looked decent, but there was a crap load of eel grass in the water. Not huge clumps, but just enough to have a small piece of it pretty much ruin 85% of my casts.

Man, don't ya hate that. You throw a perfect cast into a lull in between sets and you feel the Rod dip down and you know your cast is wasted.  :smt013  :smt044 . Only fished redtail way back when at the Klamath. Hate to say when. You may not have been born.  :smt044

Nice catch!

I went out last week too and was able to get a few fatties. Don't usually do much surf perch fishing and usually C&L what i do catch, but think i have new found love for surf perch. The're abundant all over and easy-ish to catch, super firm meat that's perfect for civeche (had no idea), easy to fillet, and damn tasty! Think i'll start loading up the freezer from now on whenever i get the chance.

Rip there gills immediately to bleed them to help preserve. I also take a zip lock bag with ice.

Sounds good to me. I've got a typical 7-5 type of work day so i'm usually out there on the weekends. Shoot me a PM next time you head out.

Nothing fancy on the ceviche recipe, but i saw on another post about perch someone saying they make great ceviche and turns out they're absolutely right. Here's the link to the recipe:

Not sure if it is true. If you have a limit of perch and one gives birth and you have all these babies in possession on top of your limit, can you be cited ? Maybe some one can chime in. Not trying to be a downer on your post. I was told that supposedly someone was cited for this.

from 2014 but it`s all I found .

https://californiaoutdoorsqas.com/2014/04/10/do-surfperch-fry-count-toward-the-daily-limit/

Thanks. So as long as the fry were not outside the fish you are fine , but they do go towards limit if outside of mama and in possession from article .

" The law says the limit is 10 of any one species. Surfperch are livebearers and it is legal for a person to have fish still inside a livebearing species. Technically, fry are not considered individual fish until they are born, so they do not count toward the limit. However, if the fry are outside the body, then they technically count as a fish. If a female expels fry in a cooler or boat and puts a person over the limit, please return the fry to the water immediately. This will keep you from being over limit and maybe even save a fry or two … or 40. "

Yup. I've hooked surfperch and when holding them while trying to remove the hook, 30-40 baby fish just pop out and start swimming away. I thought they laid eggs before i saw that happen!

Bleeahhhh.  Perching is at a standstill on the north side of Monterey BAy.  No waves at all, and no feeding fish.  I've tried Manresa, Rio, my spots in town and haven't got a decent perch all week.

Supposed to have a bit of well over the weekend, hopefully that will change things up.

I did well on my side yesterday on high tide. The only problem is that its a crappy slanted walk to the spots. Nice deep holes though.
