Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: FF for T13 with Sonar Shield
« on: November 26, 2020, 08:12:06 AM »
Thanks guys, but mine will 100% be going under the Sonar Shield.

So here's what I'm looking at so far. Hummingbird Helix 5 CHIRP GPS G2 plus the scupper transducer. I'm gravitating toward Hummingbird because apparently the scupper hole on the T13 is shaped for a Hummingbird transducer.
https://humminbird.johnsonoutdoors.com/fish-finders/helix/helix-5-chirp-gps-g2?jo-page=2
https://humminbird.johnsonoutdoors.com/accessories/transducers/xpth-9-hw-t-helix-dual-spectrum-chirp-w-temp-plastic-thru-hull-transducer

Questions:
-Anyone with good/bad experience with this model?
-Can anyone confirm that it will fit in the T13 sonar shield on the included gimbal mount?
-(For my angler friend) Do anglers find Down Imaging and Side Imaging actually useful?

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / FF for T13 with Sonar Shield
« on: November 25, 2020, 10:21:40 AM »
Gurus of NCKA, please recommend me a new FF that will fit the older style Trident 13's with the fish finder hatch/sonar shield. I've started doing a bit of research myself, but most of the info is outdated. Hard to tell if the newer models that are available now will fit under the sonar shield. I'll be buying one as a gift for an angler with a T13 and one for myself (diver) to replace my dead Lowrance Hook5. I liked the features of the Hook5 when it worked.

Main Criteria:
-As big as possible that fits in the Sonar Shield
-GPS and Downscan for structure/depth
-Color screen
-(Bonus) Transducer that fits in the scupper hole without protruding

Thanks!

I have the same FF with the same intermittent issue, but otherwise its a perfect unit for my needs. Anyone have links to a step-by-step on how to wire the card slot?

Kayak Diving and Spearfishing / Re: Any experience using ear plugs?
« on: March 28, 2018, 10:54:59 PM »
I tried Doc's Pro Plugs for the first time a couple weeks ago. I had been diving to 50ft without equalization issues before trying them so it's tough to say if they had any real positive effect. I feel like they may have made it slightly easier (less force) to equalize and kept my ear canal warmer.

They certainly didn't hinder my diving in any way so it's worth the $15 to try imo. Make sure you get the vented ones.

Hang the stringer off the side for optimal bleed-out. An insulated bag to keep them out of the sun/seagulls when paddling is on my list though.

Here's my space saving anchor setup for when the kelp clip isn't usable. It works well if you're a diver because you're gonna have to dive down and retrieve it a lot of the time. I haven't installed the anchor trolley that I purchased because I feel like it's just one more thing to snag my wetsuit on.

Upgrade the weak nylon cord to some quality dyneema reel line because it broke on me once:

Really fascinating to learn that there is a marine biologist named “Boris Worm”...

But seriously, it seems a bit vacuous to say that fishing “affects” 55% (or whatever percentage) of the oceans surface. I’d bet that the actual surface area directly affected by, say, nets in the water is a tiny fraction of that.

I interpret this as "fishing vessels travel over 55% of the ocean surface"

The ocean needs to lay down. Looking forward to some get togethers.

A trip down to Monterey to target sheephead and MFE would be high on my list

CA Regulations / Re: Can I Sell Shed Antlers?

What is the exemption for selling taxidermy mounts?

A taxidermist can sell your mount that he did for you to someone else if you don't pay.

Thanks.  So if I start doing taxidermy shoulder mounts for practice I can’t sell them to recoup the cost of materials? Gotta love California...

If the deer's head fell of naturally...

The WS yak donation got 10 replies...but still....

Basically crickets.  :smt005

http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=81589.0

I was not going to donate this year for just that reason. I ended up with just barely enough funds left in my budget to go ahead and donate again. It does not matter to me what happens to the kayak after it is won. The winner can use it, sell it, or burn it, I don't care. I just want Wildy to know that the donation was worth it in terms of advertising the brand. Last year and this year I really did not see much from anyone about any of the prizes. I would rather donate a kayak to PIF or HOW. That is much more worth it in my opinion for advertising. Sorry to rant, but this was brought up as a sponsor thing in previous post and I am a sponsor so I figured I would tell you all how I feel.

I really like the idea of a WS Thresher with the modular helix motor and I will hype the hell out of it all over the internet and on the water. Tell the sponsors about me  :smt044

I personally prefer forums over social media. Big thank you to all the sponsors, moderators, and forum members who coordinate and contribute to DOTY and AOTY.

Dexter softgrip 9": good flex and nice narrow blade that I like. I have to sharpen it often and I wish the tip had a bit more curve

Bubba Blade 9: I was just given one for christmas. Sharp as hell and good curvature at the tip, but the wide blade will take some getting used to. I think I like it though
