Just when I thought 3 kayaks were enough for an ex-kayaker, I added another to the fleet. Revo 11. To make matters worse, after i told myself i was gonna fish it bare bones no rigging....I bought a sail for it (i really really need to stop looking in the classified section).  A relatively benign search on ack for a furling kit yielded a whole list of other cool and outrageously priced hobie stuff that I absolutely do not need but will eventually buy.

As far as I can tell, I need: turbo fins, furling kit, ama kit, rubber mesh pockets, 21"hbar, rocket launcher, sailing rudder and a second job.

I havent stepped in a kayak shop in years, whos got the best stock of goods? Id rather buy from a sponsor than online.

PS, this spring Im gonna shoot for a Russo's to Holland Tract cruise/fish.  Would eventually like to do a russos (maybe big break) to disco sail.  Its a pretty straight shot and generally all downwind.  Anybody game, i need a second vehicle to make it feasible :)

I had a non-hobie pedal yak. I got caught at the dam at Melones in a wind event and used my jacket and a paddle to make a sail that blew me back to Tuttletown in record time. So I bought a hobie sail. Loved the sail but then had to jury rig a furler. Then got knocked down twice and so bought some Spring Creek outriggers. It worked so well I dumped all of it and bought an AI. Moral of the story: just buy an AI.

Does anyone out there have a definitive answer from a California state agency on the necessity of registering a kayak over eight feet in length that employs a sail?  Local DMV disagrees with the California Department of Boating and Waterways on requirement.

DMV is a state agency and says it must be registered, I didn't think there has ever been any question on this.  Whether you register it or the law is enforced on your body of water is a different subject, it stands to reason though, that, at any time, an enforcement officer may ask to see it and you might get cited.

I won't be buying an ai, if I really like sailing I'll get a hobie cat, they're much cheaper lol.

Tell that to the Chico DMV.  With California Boating and Waterways regulation booklet in hand, visited DMV to register my IA.  Not interested in booklet, their position, no motor, no need.

Where is this mystical land of Chico....the dmv I know and loathe nickel and dimes everyone to death and makes us wait six hours before doing so.  The local lakes around me are beyond anal about the rules....I'd not register it if I thought I could get away with it.

I bought sperry topsiders the other day  :smt010

I think I'm just getting lazy in my old age.....between the sail my home built trolling motor insert I think I can bbq and drink beer all day instead of putting in any work.

I still hate sailors though.
