Didn't take much after seeing those shots of the launch to get Mel on board. So, dare I say... "Long live the KING!" Eventhough, it's a bit more of a drive than she is used to... we'll be there barring really bad conditions. Got my fingers crossed and looking forward to meeting some brothern from way north.

This sounds pretty good!
I'm gonna try to make it. It's a ways off so I don't know for sure just yet.

When the time gets nearer, I will entertain a carpool with someone from the SC area. I can haul one other yak and gear with me.

I want to go BAD, but I'm a total newbie to the big blue. I have an Ocean Kayak Malibu 2 XL that I've only used in lakes for trout with success, would it be safe on the Shelter Cove waters? Will a rod and reel rated at 15lbs. be adequate or should I get a bigger rig? Is the area SHARKY? Too many questions I know, but it sounds like a hell of a great time I've marked the calendar. Now I need to run it past the Boss/Wife, can I bring her?
Oh Ben, If I get the green light I'll let ya know, I'm in Redding and maybe we could carpool.

I quoted you here and modified your text for ease of answering:

1)  Ocean Kayak Malibu 2 XL ..... would it be safe on the Shelter Cove waters?

2)  Will a rod and reel rated at 15lbs. be adequate?

3)  Is the area SHARKY?

4)  Too many questions I know

5)  Boss/Wife, can I bring her?

1)  That kayak will work just fine.

2)  That rod and reel might be a bit light, but it'll work.

3)  I've never seen a GWS, but there've been a few attacks there over the years (ab divers and maybe a surfer).  It's a non-issue, IMO.

4)  No it's not - keep 'em coming.   :smt001

5)  All are welcome (except tweakers, cry-babies, selfish creeps, game hogs and meanies*  :smt002).

*Meanie-Smartasses are OK if they can take what they give out!   :smt003

Disclaimer:  I don't want to make like going in the ocean isn't a serious commitment, because it is, but I do want to point out that the launch is an excellent and safe one when conditions are at all reasonable.  Also, the access to fishy waters is such that even newbies should have no problem venturing out just as far as they're comfortable with.  Add to that the fact that we'll have a virtual armada of experienced and friendly guide-buddies around and I'd say anyone with the proper gear could potentially catch the biggest/most fish and have the most fun.

Here's some pics from 5.5 years ago before NCKA existed and before I had my head screwed on tight (no PFD's for 8 and 11 year old hanging out with me around a mile from the launch on a FAC day).  It's hard to believe I used to do such lameass things, but you live and learn or you die stubborn.   :smt001

ABking, thanks for the answers to my newbie questions, I feel much better now!
Weather and wife permitting I will try to make it, sounds like fun and would be a great intro to yakin on the coast.

1. I will try to upgrade to a rockfish/ling rod and reel, any recommendations as affordable as possible as I am a substitute teacher and the work up here is feast or famine?

2. what pound test should I spool it with?

3. terminal tackle suggestions, hook, sinkers, swivels?

4. bait?

5. lures?

6. anchor system? I have one do I need it?

7. do any of the crew bring instruments for camp jamming? I play bass, banjo and guitar.

Too many questions yet? I have more but they can wait till later.

by the way, yes I'll wear my PFD and heed the advice the ocean vets!

I will want to stay in the campground and not get a room.

Thanks again ABking, NCKA Rocks!

later, Tad

Geno, MattS you guys goin?
