Title: Need a easy day trip around Sacramento
Post by: Blueline paddle on October 10, 2017, 11:18:24 AM
I am looking for a quick day trip near Sacramento area.  Have a few days of my vacation left and was thinking of fishing either tomorrow or Thursday. I haven't gotten to explore the local area with my kayak but was hoping for some ideas. The type of fishing doesn't matter to me since I am still very much new to freshwater fishing and haven't found a particular style or favorite type of fish to target. Just want a major destressor

Thank you for any input

Was thinking of lake natomas but had never looked at fishing there.  Any good this time of year?

Define good.

Alabama bass fishing there is spotty at best (see what I did there?)  :smt002
Rainbow trout fishing is also spotty, but if you catch one there is a good chance that it will be in the 5-10lb range.

The American river is probably a good bet. Read up on river salmon regs. I'd recomment tossing a 7/8oz flying C chartreuse with silver blade in the holes below the Howe Ave bridge. If you fish above Ancil Hoffman you're in the barbless section.

Mather lake..... meh

Deep water Channel will have striper, salmon, crappie, largemouth bass, sunfish, catfish.  If you don't mind the dirty water, I'd recommend throwing around a rattletrap that is under one ounce. That way you can keep any salmon that you catch... and boy, do salmon love to hit rattletraps at the DWC, as do the striper, bass and crappie.

I'll be fishing on Thursday if you are looking for company, but I'll probably not go to any of the places listed. Send pm if interested.
