With the wet season we had it apparently brought out the schools of silver salmon thick down to HMB and some running up the sac river. The other day in HMB about 20-30 boats got citations for having silvers in the box thinking they were small jacks. Citations were going for $1500 each! Also saw online a photo from the AR of a silver bled out out and on a stringer with the angler thinking it was a small jack. Just remember to be sure it's a king before you bonk it!

Saw a few boats get ticketed on the water last weekend. When a boat with uninformed anglers on board gets a boat limit with coho in the mix, who gets the ticket?

I guess the captain/owner of the boat.

If no one fesses up, I bet they wouldn't hesitate to ticket ALL the anglers on board.

Never heard of that one either.
What do you think the mortality rate is of a fish after being netted and manhandled?
is the gum test not enough for the DFG to not issue a ticket?

Thanks to Eric Stockwell, it has saved a lot of coho lives because not every king has straight black gums. Another way to take into account is how the salmon fights.

The four methods I use are 1) how the fish fight. Choho usually have a fiesty fight and jump out of the water. 2) the gums check 3) colors on their back are more green vs. king I think are more purple 4) the tail check as a last resort.

Typically 1-3 will get the job done, and if it is suspect just release it unharmed. I let a 20 lb suspect fish go at shelter. It was a tough one to swallow cause it could have gone both ways but I took the side of caution and let it go.i have some how convince myself over the years it was a batray and that helps me get through it. :smt010
