Was chasing perch today to beat the heat. The first fish I landed was a surf striper! I haven't been this excited about a fish in a while.
Caught lots of big perch and I also saw lots of drunken idiots out at the beach too.

Sweet! :smt006

Nice catch! What beach?

Nice way to beat the heat.

Yes!!!! I recently caught my first surf Striper about the same size and yeah I felt exactly the same way. Awesome. Mine took a motor oil perch grub. What did you get your fish on?

Nice catch! What beach?
Yeah, where?

Cool, fun!

Just north of Bodega bay at salmon creek beach. It was the only beach that I could find parking at!
Bait wise we were catching them on gulp sandworms (camo), motor oil perch grubs, and live sand crabs. A majority of the sand crabs were carrying eggs or had recently molted (soft shelled). The striper fell for a sand crab.

I ask because I used to be a surf striper fanatic when I lived in San Mateo county. That just doesn't happen in my current neck of the the woods, but this year I've heard reports of stripers at Westport and even north of there. Maybe they're expanding their range? Oooh, fingers crossed!

Great job!!!
Hard to beat that feeling of getting a new species!!!

Eric (loletaeric) posted a report maybe a year ago about catching them at the mouth of the eel river.... At least I think it was Eric. It was definitely the eel river.

So, you were at salmon creek south beach? Close to bodega bay?

I don't know of more than one salmon creek beach? It's a long ish beach and I guess I was near the middle? I just looked at the surf and picked a likely looking spot.

Ok - let's try the question this way... how close (N/S) of the actual inlet of Salmon Creek?
Thanks!

Yeah, you must not know that beach very well :smt044. The creek does not flow when there is no rain. There is a lagoon formed with a long sand bar dividing the lagoon from the beach. The mouth (inlet) of the creek varies from year to year. This year there was lots of water so the creek blew out straight. Yearswithf low water means the creek flows north a bit before blowing out if it blows out at all. Asa kid there used to be salmon and steelhead there, but that is a long time ago....

Thank you! The location tag is perfect. If you map it, you have N/S options, the N one is quite far north of the creek bed. I was not expecting it to be flowing - just best reference on map. I've never been to that beach though
