Title: WTT
Post by: Bushy on April 18, 2017, 07:58:56 PM
I need a 4-weight fly set up.  Rod and reel with floating line.  anyone have an extra or old one around with juju?

I'm going to New mexico near Taos in July to a dude ranch that has fly fish only for browns, cutthroats and rainbows.  I need to get one now so I have time to practice.
Can trade  conventional salt reel or maybe a new 11' qualtiy surf rod?

I've always said I would not fly fish though my first rod ever was a flyrod.  This place allows nothing else, so looks like I gotta join the effete corps of impudent snobs.  I will try to match up with an Orvis vest and Patagonia waders, and maybe a fedora.

thank you for your consideration

Get a basic 4wt set up; new. You'll be fine.
And after your trip, when you see how much fun you had, I expect you to be sporting nothing less than a pink fedora.
You will use both the fly rod, and fedora, again.

I have a 7'6 Reddington rs4 4wt with a reel and a Cortland WF floating line I will trade for a casting reel Abu Garcia 5500 or older shimano 100.
I don't know why I even bought it as I don't fish fry flies and I only used it a couple times. It's maybe 5 or 6 years old.
Heck I would even take a good med action 7-8ft spinning rod as a trade as I would get a hell of a lot more use outta it.

Have to be a NCKA express kinda thing.

Thanks David-  I think I have something you would like. and of an equal or greater value.

Did you buy it as a Reddington combo?  I saw decent to good reviews about the Reddington RS4. All articles featured a longer rod, however, and my old memories suggest the longer, the better for casting distance.  Like a 7'6" might be a creek rod rather than a river or lake piece...

I am unsure about a short flyrod.  7'6" seems too short?

Am i incorrect here?  My ignorance is showing, I know.

Yes you are correct. I was going to use it on small waters to fish dry flies on the north Yuba and similar rivers but never got into it. I would rather swing flies for chromers.

No not a combo. Cheap imitation Orvis reel, but good enough for trout.

Allen,
If you need a rod that can cast distance this is not the one you want.

Bill at the Headwaters has a new fly shop, maybe he can help you out. I believe it is called the Headwaters Fly Shop...

You should be fine on those small New Mexico streams.  But I got a longer 5 wt.  you can bring too, just in case.   :smt002
