Were you stuck on 680 or 80 yesterday?

I was lucky to avoid most and was only delayed about 15 mins due to the 680 closure.

Southbound I-680 in San Jose still closed due to suicidal woman

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KTVU) -- Northbound lanes of I-680 in San Jose reopened Monday night, but southbound lane remain closed as police continue to speak to a woman threatening to jump over the freeway, authorities said.

San Jose Police were able to isolate the woman to one side of the overpass ledge so the northbound side is back open to traffic. The traffic back-up has died down yet at the height of rush hour commute, it was a nightmare.

Just before 3 p.m. police shut down both directions of I-680 at the Alum Rock exit after a distraught woman climbed the fence onto the overpass ledge. Police said it's an estimated 40 to 50 foot drop with no netting below.

“We did the normal precautions,” said Lt. Randy Schriefer of San Jose Police. “We notified CHP. We shut the freeway down and started negotiations.”

The situation created havoc for drivers using the major thoroughfare in San Jose. NewsChopper 2 captured the back-up that stretched for miles. At one point, it extended to Fremont for those heading south and I-280 in San Jose for those heading north.

“Oh, it's bad,” said Joe Bettencourt of San Jose. “I came all the way from Sant Clara, San Tomas, Senter Road, First Street. Everything is just backed up.”

As police tried to negotiate, the patience among drivers grew thin.

“I'm tired,” said Bettencourt. “When you work all day, I'm just tired.”

The city streets were just as bad.

“I'm coming from Costco which is probably three or four miles from here. It's already taken me 50 minutes,” said Rhonda Baker of San Jose. “It took 10 minutes to get there. It's just crazy.”

While most couldn't help but be frustrated, other drivers understood the unpredictable and tense situation at hand.

“It's bad but I feel sadder for the person that feels hopeless enough to do what they are doing,” said Barbara Esparza of San Jose.

“Bear with us,” said Lt. Schriefer. “We're doing our very best. Obviously it's a volatile situation and it can go either way at either time.”

Police had their crime intervention team, a group of specialists out here who deal specifically with situations like this one. Police tell KTVU she is cooperative and plan to reopen the other side of 680 when the situation is fully resolved.

If they don't just do it, usually means it is a cry for help. Those that really mean it, just do it... She will get the help she needs now. Someones Daughter? Someones wife? One of us? Suicide is sad and usually over something fixable.... Hang in there this Christmas season folks. Remember, all the gifts, presents, stuff, doesn't matter. Serve others and find joy in giving of time and love. Losing yourself and helping others can put love and perspective in your life. Merry Christmas everyone. Give someone a hug :smt007

This is a tough season for many.  Sorry for getting 'sappy', but if not this time of year, then when?

Suicide is no joke, but neither is bay area traffic. I think they go hand-in-hand, and can't believe there isn't more of it for those that are forced to drive in that crap.
Live your life, the way you want to be remembered. Don't have any regrets, we only get this one dance to make it count. Start at your eulogy, and work backwards.

I drive from Santa Clara, home to Livermore everyday; over the Sunol Grade. That was the first time I have NOT been stuck in traffic going home.  :smt005  This incident happened 2-3 exits south of where I get on freeway, so it was in the perfect spot. Hopefully that lady gets whatever help she needs, but our emergency services must do something different. We can't let one indiviual stop a whole section of the Bay Area for several hours.

Turns out that she was on drugs and later attacked and severely bit the finger of a correctional deputy.

SAN JOSE -- A woman whose threat to jump off the Alum Rock Avenue overpass shut down Interstate 680 for nine hours Monday later attacked and seriously injured a Santa Clara County Sheriff's deputy while she was being booked into jail, authorities said.

The woman, identified by San Jose police as 26-year-old Sandy Quinones, was in the intake area of the Santa Clara County jail early Tuesday when she attacked and bit a female deputy, according to Sgt. Kurtis Stenderup of the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office, which oversees the jail.

Stenderup declined to go into further detail. But a source familiar with the case said the woman bit the deputy's finger severely enough to send her to the hospital.

Quinones, of San Jose, was arrested on suspicion of trespassing, resisting arrest and being under the influence of drugs just before midnight Monday, following her standoff with police during which she threatened to jump from the overpass onto I-680 below. The encounter prompted the California Highway Patrol to close the freeway in both directions stretching from McKee Road to Capitol Expressway starting around 3 p.m., crippling the afternoon commute.

She surrendered to police after nine hours and was taken to Valley Medical Center for medical evaluation. After she was cleared, San Jose police transported her to the county jail and ordered her booked on a 72-hour psychiatric hold, police spokesman Officer Albert Morales said.

It was during that booking that she allegedly attacked the deputy. Quinones is being held on $10,000 bail, according to jail records.

Nice. That's nice.  Empathy is so overrated.

I have more "empathy" for the thousands of other people that were affected by one dope fiend's stupid actions.

And before anyone gets all high and mighty, I have close friends that have turned into dope fiends and have had two close friends commit suicide. Doesn't change anything.
