I can't make it to the meeting tomorrow, but I did send emails to DFG, CFG, and the other folks listed on Paul's website.

The muddiness of spring floods is supposed to keeps predation low via bad visibility.  And the speed of the floods means the salmon fry get to the ocean faster.

Safety First / Re: Worst Injury?
« on: March 28, 2023, 04:26:26 PM »
Getting finger grabbed by a crab... mighty terrible. Avoid at all costs..

First time I went crabbing, I was talking to a person on another kayak while unloading a trap.  She mentioned how a crab had pinched her finger so hard she was going to lose the nail.  I then proceeded to let a crab grab me hard enough to break skin and draw blood.  Those guys are way stronger out of the ocean than they are out of Ranch 99.    (All things considered, not a bad injury. Just timely.)

General Talk / Re: Where to go near Gaviota
« on: March 23, 2023, 08:47:22 PM »
You can launch from Gaviota State Park (go under the railroad trestles).  It's also a decent campsite (reservation needed) that's not too far from the nearest town.

I've been there in the summer and the area off the beach has halibut.

I can't make it up to Cave Junction, but I can give to a Gofundme/Paypal.  Set that up!

8.5 ft is too short for the ocean.  Besides safety, the shortness means it'll be slow, which will make getting around a pain.

FWIW, I'm on a 14' tandem Hobie with my 13 yo.  It's been great.  The tandem also lets me take friends with minimal fishing experience.  You could get any 11'+ single SoT for your 16yo.

I also have an inflatable Advanced Elements (12') from when I had a car too small to carry a kayak.  It was very portable and great on calm days, but it's also slow and gets blown around because it has no keel.

If you're in the HMB area, Pillar Point is perfect.  It has the easiest entry/exit, support from other yakers if you need it, and reefs with fish.  Rockaway is good too, but more remote.   Bean Hollow is a different story.  When I first started fishing from a kayak, I watched some video of a guy getting sideswipped over and over by his runaway kayak in the surf at bean hollow.

General Talk / Re: Kayak fishing haiku

Haiku is a great way to capture that vibe from the outdoors.  Lots of time sitting on my yak waiting for something to happen...

water in kayak
usually not that much
where are you leaking?

whale breaches nearby
do you see my yak, big guy?
sphincter gets tighter

For Sale / T-Bone, hitch rack, $100 (sold)
« on: October 28, 2022, 04:46:58 PM »
I bought a used kayak and this rack came with it.  Doesn't look like it's been used (the fasteners are still in a plastic bag), but it has been on my garage floor for a year.

Anyone need this?

Going that far north is definitely a "send it" kind of move.  Good job on them for bagging some albacore.

A friend rowing around Bair Island reported lots of dead baitfish being eaten by birds.

Sucks to see those dead sturgeon.

Congrats on the beast!  Should keep your freezer full for a while.

Sorry this happened.  Good luck with surgery today.

I remember those.  Some catering company gave away 50+ of them.

General Talk / Youtube vid: Fishing for bream (from Japan's NHK station)
« on: February 28, 2022, 08:12:51 AM »
NHK (Japan's PBS) makes very soothing youtube videos.  This one is about fishing for bream.  The master angler is using a reel-less rod that reminds me of an ice-fishing setup.

So many ways to fish...
