Fishing Tournaments and Events / MBK Derby 2024
« on: March 21, 2024, 06:56:17 PM »
Hello All,

Set you calendar to September 7th! Sign up at https://www.montereybaykayaks.com/kayak-fishing-tours.html. Just like last year all proceeds will benefit Kayak Fishing For Beginners. Last years proceeds already went to help some awesome kids, a few veterans, and a disabled person get into the sport safely by helping them with safety gear and some fishing equipment.

As we get closer to the event I will post the sponsors. There are more than last year! Also, I added an hr to the event so there is more fish time

Hope to see you all out there

« on: January 06, 2024, 04:11:51 PM »
Its that time of the year again to start setting up for the next derby. I want to continue this as long as I possibly can. But in order to do this I need the max number of participants to make it worth it. Cast your vote for the best choice.

General Fishing Tips / MBK Derby Still On!
« on: August 22, 2023, 07:36:58 AM »
Hello All,

I am sure you heard the news of the early rockfish cabezon and lingcod closure. That being said we are still on for the MBK derby. We will have to change the rules a bit based on new regs but flatfish and perch will still be available to take. Since Halibut wins every year anyway its not a big change.

There will still be a large raffle with tons of prizes and entrance package gifts. Not to mention a potluck! Lets just turn this event into a big get together as its been awhile since we got the NCKA family together.

I will post a new rules and regulations form soon

General Talk / Kayak Fishing For Beginners 501(c)(3)
« on: February 04, 2023, 01:57:49 PM »
Hello All,

Many of you know me as the GM at Monterey Bay Kayaks and others as the founder of Kayak Fishing For Beginners Facebook group. I was trying to figure out a way to give back to the kayak fishing community as kayak fishing is my life not only for work but for pleasure.

So, I finally was able to make a 501(c)(3) non profit for Kayak Fishing For Beginners. Our mission is to help veterans, people with disabilities, and children get into the sport of kayak fishing safely by sending them packages that include all necessary safety gear along with some fishing stuff. In the future we plan to throw safety clinics around the entire Nation for free to teach safety as well.

We have just went live as of a few weeks ago and we are legit in the eyes of the Feds and the state. Ca was much more complicated as I am sure many of you know. This years MBK derby will be benefiting the non profit. I figured it would be better to actually start supporting kayak fisherman.

Since this is a non profit I can't do it without the support of the community and donations. Check out our website at https://kayakfishingforbeginners.org

Also if anyone can help the the word out there that would be great!

Any donation helps

General Talk / Volunteers Needed
« on: May 15, 2022, 01:32:03 PM »
Hello everyone. We are needing volunteers with pier fishing knowledge for the big event July 9th. Details Below. Let me know if anyone is interested

It is the 30th anniversary for both MBNMS and Santa Cruz-based Shared Adventures (https://www.sharedadventures.org/). As part of July’s Enjoy Spectacular events, MBNMS will partner for the first time with Shared Adventures in their annual “Day on the Beach” on July 9, 2022 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This event hosts more than 300 people with special needs (both physical and mental disabilities), 400+ family members and friends, and over 250 enthusiastic volunteers who team up to share a full day of adaptive sports, including kayaking, outrigger canoeing, SCUBA diving, and beach wheelchair rides/floats. Every year, 30-40 veterans take part in Day on the Beach.

This year, MBNMS plans to add to the list of possible ocean recreation —a recreational fishing activity from the Santa Cruz Wharf. We will partner with our advisory council recreation fishing representatives Jose Montes and Adam Helm  to guide participants in a fun, hands-on experience.

We anticipate having 5 fishing stations for the Shared Adventures Day on the Beach fishing activity. I think we should start to recruit your expert fishing buddies to help out.

We would need them on July 9th 9:30am- 4:30pm. There's going to be a lot of music and fun activities at our Exploration Center too so have them bring their families.

I anticipate 5 fishing stations near the fishing exhibit on the Santa Cruz wharf. We want to have 5 stations  with one person for each station that is an expert fisherman.

I have a commitment from Santa Cruz/Capitola Boat Rental and fishing store to provide poles and line for 5 stations and we can buy tackle and bait.

Fishing Tournaments and Events / 2022 MBK Derby date poll
« on: December 12, 2021, 03:30:31 PM »
After this years derby I decided I really liked doing the derby is September. The Weather tends to be nicer and more predictable. We had a great turnout last year and looking to do even more next year. Any suggestions would be nice or anything you would like to see. Hopefully we can get a kayak for the derby next year, fingers crossed...

General Talk / What would you like to see in your local kayak shop?
« on: August 08, 2021, 09:12:26 AM »
Needing some help figuring out what type of fishing tackle you would like to see us carry at MBK. If swivels/hooks/weights and such please include sizes. Trying to make sure we have everything for the kayak fisherman that forgot something or ran out.

We have plenty swimbaits, weighted heads, nets, filet knives.

Thanks

Chapter events are always the last Saturday of the month. So we would tentatively be looking at Oct 30th 2021.

We do things a little different than other HOW chapters do, so we ask that our Volunteer guides do not fish. As passionate kayak anglers ourselves we have plenty of time to feed our own addiction. We like to make sure all of our focus is on our participants. In order to volunteer we ask that you are experienced and well versed in kayak safety. You will be assigned your own participant to work with. If you are interested please post your full name, phone number, and email so I can get a hold of you as we get closer to the event

The HOW mission DOES include Active duty and First Responders also. So we will be reaching out to them as well. As for working with the local VA Clinics in Monterey and Capitola, we can do that but we have found that usually by the time they find some Veterans to come out with us the event is already full.  Most times when we post the Eventbright sign up link the event is "sold out" in about 48 hours.

As the event get closer we will be reaching out to NCKA more to coordinate things like food, drinks and such.
If any of you have any questions, please feel free to message Zach here or you may text or email him directly @ (805)746-9333  and email at zclift792gmail.com. You may also email our chapter at centralca@heroesonthewater.org and follow us on FB at Heroes on the Water-Central Ca Chapter.

Thank you all for showing such an interest in helping out for this great cause.
