I was in the breakers zone because that’s how you practice handling the kayak in the breakers. I didn’t realize I forgot my PFD until I flipped over. I took my paddle leash off when I launched because it was more convenient, but in retrospect it would have helped me (the kayak was swept ashore, and I would have been pulled with it).
It made me think of a strong anchoring point for the leash in a situation like this. What do folks use?

I would think going in and out through the breakers would be better practice since it's more reflective of what actually happens during launches/landings, instead of just hanging around the breaker zone....But that's just me.

This could've been a much worse and hope you have enough sense of your surroundings and the people around you so you don't kill anyone or yourself the next time around

This probably isn’t the smartest thing to do especially around a bunch of surfers and without your PFD.

Why were you just hanging out in the breaker area and paddling so slowly? It’s like you were waiting to be pummeled by the waves.

appreciate the suggestions guys! Didn’t think of the bike route. Also going to have a closer look at those suppliers, thanks Alan. I got a bunch more research to do

Hey y’all, I’m looking for a cam lever clamp to hold a tube for a project of mine. The other end would be mounted/welded into an aluminum square tube. Where can I find something like this? Or does it have to be custom made? Kyle

MotionOfOcean - do you mean that the hook is designed to pull one of the drive pedals backwards so that the fins are horizontal? If so, I can see how it would work in some cases (though, I’ve never seen anyone doing that).

However, in ocean surf, once the kayak lands on sand, I think you’d be getting sand all over the sprocket and gears.

maybe hobie’s description doesn’t exactly match what others do, but the drive would lay flat on top of your kayak (exactly how you have it in your picture). The bungee goes across your drive/fins and hooks into an eyelet on your hull to secure the drive. Although looking at your pic, you may have to position your drive further back so the fins are under the seat (like what christianbrat does). The drive would not be inside the drive well, so you’d get no more sand in your gears than your current method. I’ll see if I can get a picture for you to illustrate what I’m talking about.

AlsHobieOutback actually does the same thing from what he described...

I leash mine there, and then slide it under the bungee cords or straps on the front hatch to hold it for launch and landing.

ive seen a few guys use that bungee to wrap across their leashed  mirage drive while it lays down flat. Using the hook alone to the drive would not do anything unless you bungee the entire drive. It would be really hard for it to fall out if you flip. Hobie says the retainer bungee..

maybe you need to use it the intended way?

why not use the bungee with hook that comes with the Hobie specifically for that purpose? unless you don't have one....

You may have luck asking on alantani.com. Although Isn’t that reel a bit small for salmon? I’d be concerned about a big hot running salmon spooling me without enough line capacity on that reel
