:smt006 Hi, I don't know if I am posting at the right place, but I can't seem to find where to introduce myself to the members.

Anyway, I live in Cape Town South Africa and I absolutely love fishing of any kind, bass, trout, carp and sea. If it swims I want to try and catch it. I just recently bought myself a WS Tarpon 140 and am looking forward to christening her with fish slime. Plastic yaks are scary expensive here, in fact, I could have bought two top model fibreglass yaks for the price I paid for my Tarpon 140. After extensive reading up and prowling of websites and forums, I decided on the Tarpon 140. I only had a choice between Ocean Kayaks and Wilderness systems and did not like the prowler 13 as I found it to be uncomfortable for me. Most fishing yaks here are fibreglass but I see that there is a slow but steady change over to plastic as most of our Cape Town launches are in very rocky areas and a bit harsh on fibreglass.

I will post some pics when I have a few ready. Keep yourselves safe, the lines tight and the dry side up.

Welcome aboard and to the Madness Steve!  You'll find a wealth of information here about yak rigging & fishing.  Would love to see pictures of your future fishing trips and your catches.  It's always interesting for me to see what yak fishing is like out side of California!

Welcome to the board.  Please post some pics, I love seeing exotic fish.

Anyway, it's interesting how expensive SA fiberglass kayaks are here in the states.  I'm pretty sure here you can buy two WS Tarpon 14s for the price of one fiberglass Kaskazi Dorado.  I guess shipping has a lot to do with it.

Cool!
I've always enjoyed reading about the South African fishing scene. I've seen some nutty videos of gnarly surf launches/landings in that area.
I'm a big fan of the Tarpon 140, and have paddled one for years. I've kept mine very simple, with only minor rigging. I think I'll add a couple of flushmount rod holders this winter, but that's about it.

Now if only WS would make a composite tarpon...........

Welcome Steve!! :smt006

Ocean yak fishing in South Africa sounds really exciting. But, if your Tarpon is red, you and Piscean need to talk!!!!

Can't wait for your reports and pics.

Im an ex Kaypie myself. Grew up fishing outta Gordonsbay on my Oupas boat. Ithink I posted on a thread of yours at the new WCKA site. Wecome to the madness !!! I can see how plastic boats may take off around the cape with all the rocky areas as opposed to the KZN guys who primarily do beach launches. You got yourself a good boat that will take alot of abuse, and is a great fishing platform. Your season is about to heat up and Im sure wed all appreciate any reports you have of Kob, Geelbek, Stumpnose, Snoek or whatever. The fishing in the Cape is very similar to ours here on the Central/North Califonia coast. We also have the cold and warm currents doing seasonal battle, and bringing upwelling and warmer water species together.

Steve ,

We think its a joke but.....

One of our members was in his RED Hobie a couple years back, and a Great White did a balastic test bite on the nose of his yak, sending him flying.

Then, a few weeks ago, our buddy Piscean was inspected and then actually followed by a GW (we refer to them as the "Landlord") . Yep, his yak is red also....

No factual evidence of this, but its fun to tease the new folks who join us with red yaks. :smt044

But then again, after the inspection by the Landlord, Piscean was heard to mumble something about his next yak will NOT be red!! :smt005 :smt004 :smt003

i Steve:

all my yaks are yellow.  they used to call it yum-yum yellow, but now I think the phrase is really tasty red.

Welcome to the board and please keep us posted with your expoits!

I have fished with Sharkey and safe to say we love SA yakkers.
