#1 rookie mistake that sends people for a swim is reaching for something in the tank well.
Sit side saddle on the kayak, feet in the water, and work from there.
As far as righting the kayak; reach underneath the kayak to the other side. Pull down on that side while pushing up on the side nearest you. You may have to take a quick breath and get under your kayak for a brief second. It depends on your beam and arm length, but I have found this to be the fastest and easiest way to right the kayak.

Good mornin', great reminder about the side saddle.  I leapt over the top of my capsized yak and flipped it back by grabbing the opposite side and fall backwards and it worked well also. Tons of gear leashed down.

I  got back into the kayak about the time another NCKA member had paddled out to assist.  Thank you, whoever you are.

lighfoot.
That was me that helped you out .  :smt006
Glad everything worked out well in the end.
There are plenty of peeps to hook up and fish with.
Hope to see you out on the water soon.
Take care.

Heard someone went in sat,  sorry to hear it was you... But glad it turned out well. I dumped at OC a few years ago...
Amazing what a learning experience  getting dumped can do.
Learn from it and get back on!

I leapt over the top of my capsized yak and flipped it back by grabbing the opposite side and fall backwards and it worked well also. Tons of gear leashed down.

Using this same method, I've righted my hobie with the small sail still in the mast reveiver. But reaching the far side can be more challenging than you might expect.

+1 on this method.  I can see why it can be challenging to go on top.  However, once you do get on top, righting the yak is easier since you really use your body weight to pull.  For me, I have the option to start at the bow, then 'scoot' to the middle where my handle is.

Two of us were on shore about 100 yards from you the last time you went in the drink.  You did a good job of staying calm, getting yourself sorted and remounting your kayak.   We had your back and were ready to paddle out if you looked like you were in trouble.  But you recovered pretty quickly!

When you got to shore you mentioned how smoked you were.  That could have easily been a problem if you had panicked.  I cannot stress enough how important it is to mentally slow things down, assess the situation, and then react accordingly.  First, plan A and then B or even C.  This is for any situation not just kayaking.

Anyway, just wanted to tell you good job again.  Calm and (very) cool!

This report should be required reading for FNGs like myself.

I totally agree.  After hearing how you got tangled up, I am going to practice self-rescue with all the gear loaded on the boat.  You really do need to consider how all the extras (fish finder, leashes, fishing rods) can affect your self rescue.  Thanks for sharing.
