After last week's late notice from the landlord, as well as the heavy winds the few days, it was great to get an invite to tag along with AbKing today. Started off looking for flat fish on the beach for no love. After a good try at the beach, Eric decided to take his guest out to bread and butter for a chance at other species. With last week's memories still fresh in my mind, I decided to hold back for a while. Shortly after, I decided that it would be better to get back on the horse, so in a short time I was out there with them. Well, Eric and his guest ( Matthew ) were picking away at a mixed bag of rockfish and ling's, but it wasn't happening for me, so I decided to try an area where I hooked a few good fish last week. As soon as I get to my destination, I chose my weapon of choice ( white swimbait ) and sent it to the bottom. Trying my hardest to keep it swimming six inches off the bottom at approx one mph, I feel a short tug and bring up a nice fat ling. I let the fatty go back to the depth, and re deploy my offering and instantly feel what I was waiting for, a sharp snap and a heavy weight as my rod loads. After a long and very wild battle, I got what I was looking for. I call Eric on the radio to inform him that I just landed a beast of a Cali-Hali. Short while later I feel the same snap and as I bring her to color, my 40lb braid gives way about 3 feet above my leader. I give a few choice words as I re-tie my gear. And send her back down. Not much longer and I again feel that wonderful snap and this time, all H@#L breaks loose, the heads to the bottom three time, jumps out of the net twice, and finally she comes abord. I get her on my second clip, and apply the wood shampoo. Needless to say, I'm now super stoked. Now it's getting late and I still have to cut & bag, as well as clean and stow my gear.
It was good to get back out, and know I still have the confidence needed to enjoy this life I have.
