Launched by myself at sunrise. My regular fishing partner had to work, so I fished by myself for a change. It is not as fun, and probably a bad idea, but I needed to take advatnage of a day off- a rarity lately.
Easy launch. First wetsuit day of the year for me, and I am glad for it. Having not fished in a few weeks, it was colder than I anticipated. Pacific Lake was a slow rolling mirror of dark blue liquid today and beautiful as always. No boats, no other kayaks.
All summer long, we have had success at Davenport, at the least bringing tacos home. Today, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.
I tried everything in my arsenal including squid, herring, fish traps, megabait, etc. and was not bit. I called it an early day, and golfed this afternoon.
Driving home, I was stymied, but not upset. It takes an abrupt no-no every once in awhile to appreciate the many exciting action packed sessions that we have enjoyed...but only once in awhile!

No fish no pics no complaints.

I was a kayaker for many years before starting kayak fishing. Just getting out on the water, working your upper body, and breathing the sea air makes for a good day.

Every skunk-day is that close to a trophy haul - it's all about getting out there.   :smt001

Happened to me on opening day. Same area. Always produced fish before, but that day, nothin'. It happens. I like the idea that every skunk day is another day closer to a trophy day, nice!

"Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after."
                                                         -- Henry David Thoreau

There are fishless days of paddling the Big Blue,
drinking in the invigorating salt air with every breath,
hearing the sirens call of sea birds cries bidding me paddle onward,
dirfting into a day dream lulled by the lullaby of the sea swell,
when I find an uncommon solace in those words of timeless wisdom from one of America's great humanists and philosophers... :smt007

NAW! I want to catch fish darn it  :smt003

GWS crossed my mind a few times that morning. Fishing by yourself at dark near the triangle, without the comfort of nearby power boats, from a kayak that smells of deceased fish can make the mind do interesting things. Although the odds of getting hit are very slim, nothing works like kayak or spear fishing does to even them out a bit.
Later I looked over at the dozens of vulnerable surfers, called myself a sissy, and kept fishing.

Greg - no salmon around Davenport but watch out for the Land Lord. As you already heard, one was spotted at Bean Hollow - which is about 15 miles North of Davenport.

As for fishing, reports are slow but if your going to be there anyway, I suggest fishing a little North off the Cove. I caught a nice 22# Halibut while fishing for rockfish in that area a few months back. Look for 50 to 70 ft of water and use your FF to find the scattered reefs. You can use an Iron jig and tip it with a strip of squid so you can target a little bit of everything  :smt002 Depending on the current / drift, you  may want to use 6 to 8 oz Irons.

Good luck on the Kayak Surf Comp!  :surf

cheers Mooch!   thats exachtly the info I needed.

hmmmmm the landlord.....
maybe we can get some boardies to hang out in the water.   I always feel better while waiting in the lineup when there is some one elses hands and feet "baiting" the water!

thanks,
-greg d

Mooch -Solid advice on Davy, squid is a sure fire way to fish that cove. South of the landing has been good for us as well. A friend nailed a beautiful flattie last month about 200 yards out and the same distance south. There are gobs of rockfish including beautiful vermillion and lings.
I like to bounce frozen herring off the bottom, as well as squid on a Halibut rig. Overall, a great place to fish.

Greg- Prepare for one of the easier launches you will see. Straight out from the stairs is a magical 25 yard stretch of coast that is totally exempt from crashing waves. Despite the huge surf that Davenport gets at times, this little strip makes for a dry launch and landing every time.

I just got a digital camera that I am not afraid to take out on the water, which is why reports from me might finally be worth posting. This pic is James from last month at Davy.
