Title: BAM IV
Post by: SBD on October 05, 2008, 05:52:29 AM
Well, the weather was tough, the fishing was hard, yet we still had a GREAT time.

The results:

1st-Tote with an 11 pound 15 ounce limit
2nd-Dans 964 with a 10 pound 3 ounce limit
3rd-Freddie with an 9 pound 9 ounce limit

We weighed 26 fish, most small by Mendo standards.  Nice to see long-time NCKA folks on the podium.

Thanks to Ocean Kayak, Mark Shimizu Designs and West Marine for the support, these events wouldn't happen without there generous contributions.

More later...

Long report.
I want to thank Sean for all his efforts putting this shindig together and supplying us with fantastic prizes.
Thanks to Mark Shimizu for his much coveted belt buckle. It is an honor and priveledge to have.
It is as much an honor as a thrill to have won this event considering the skill level of the all the competitors.
With the likes of Mako1, Chuch E, Freddie, Danglin, Guitarzan ( Elk winnner this year already ), Shimmy, Jonesz, Mahi-Mahi ( a mendo regular ), OBpelagic, HolyToledo, Kunz, Mickfish, FishHunter ( the original ) and the list goes on and on I figured I was just there to fish; outclassed by FAR.
I did bring the kayak rack to transport another kayak home but I do that EVERY time there is a kayak to be won. And I have always come home with that slot empty.
It seemed I was doomed from the start of this trip.
Thursday night Becky and I got everything ready and piled up to be loaded Friday morning.
Friday morning rolls around and we slept in a little longer than expected. I want to be there somewhere between 11 and 1PM. Not happening so I am in a hurry to get out of Dodge.
I unlock the vehicle and notice I left the dome lights on all night. Crap! The vehicle has a hard time turning over but it finally starts. I let it run for a solid 20 minutes while I have my morning coffee. Battery should be charged.
We load the vehicle and I am jonesin' to get on the road.
Stressin' because I want to leave I tell Becky I will meet her in the vehicle. Sitting there going over my mental list of things I have to bring it hits me; no kayak on top! Dohhhhhhhh!!!
Load the kayak and finally ready to be on our way.
We both get in, ready to go , the vehicle won't turn over. CRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAP!!!!!!!!!!!
Gonna have to jump it.
We both get out and I stick my arm through the window and give it one last try. Voila!! It starts!!!
About 2 blocks from home I realize I do not have my glasses. Not my fishing glasses but my seeing glasses. Screw it! I need to hurry and get outta here.
Thanks to a call from Danglin in the morning I hit up Broadway Bait for one dozen decent sized minnows. I need a couple of D batteries for the aeriator so I grab those as well and pop them in. Aeriator broken. Crap! Dude there offeres me one for a price tag of $26. No thanks, I will find one on the way.
Target in Woodland is the closest place on the way. Their fishing dept consists of a rack of Barbie fishing rods ( which I thought about ) and not much more. Crap!
Walmart in Woodland, score!
Right around Arbuckle I realize I forgot my radio. Crap! Oh well, someone nearby OTW will have one .
Make a detour to Clearlake to see how their minnows look. Smaller than what I already have so I don't get any.
After I blow by the entrance and have to turn around we arrive at Mendo around 2-2:30.
I get kayak by the water and everyting set up and ready to go for the next day.
Not exactly sure what time the rain started to dump non-stop but it did not deter the NCKA crew from having a great time.
Hit the sac early as I knew it was going to be a long day ahead.
Got woken up by a generator because if that guy is up then EVERYBODY needs to be up.
Tried to get back to sleep for a while but that was a moot point.
Shoved off around 7AM. Get ready to hook up a minnow when I look at my line. WTF?!?!?
Looked like my braid was twisted to hell and frayed starting from just past the reel and through the guides. So much for getting things ready the day before. I have NO idea how I missed that but it needed to be dealt with. I casted out a big AC plug with my other rod and trolled while I was re-rigging this one.
I cut out the tangled line. As I did I watched my weight sink to the bottom. Dohhhhhhhhh! I finally got things squared away so I reeled in the trolled AC plug only to discover I was trolling a tangled mess the whole time. One of the hooks got caught in the swivel which got caught on the other treble so it was just a gob of mess being pulled through the water the entire time. More time spent NOT fishing.
I baited up a minnow and slow trolled past Vinegar Point. Seeing no action I decided to head to the south east side.
Trolling the SE side I managed to snag a buoy thanks to my incredible inattentiveness. Had to break off and re-rig. I go to tie on the #2 Gamagatsu hooks I bought only to realize I left them in the car! I don't think a sailor could have done a better job of hurling expletives at me then I did.
I had to go with with a #4 Owner hook instead.
It was about 10 and I had nothing but frustration for my efforts to this point.
Following the shoreline I come around a point and see who I think is Dan ( I don't have my seeing glasses ) with his yak next to shore. I ask if he had any luck and he casually says yes. So I ask myself what the hell am I doing wrong? I did see Sean and his weigh boat going from kayak to kayak on the west side. I have no radio so I figure everyone is catching fish but me. Then Sean comes to Dan's kayak and he hoists TWO fish. I think DAMN, what am I doing wrong?
Sticking to my game plan of trolling close to shore, a plan which is failing miserably, I cruise past Dan and am looking at shoreline ahead of me.
Then it appears. The Holy Grail. The phenomenon I have only heard about; never witnessed. Right before my eyes, the Mendo boil!!
It was not a lot of fish, but for one who has never witnessed one before it did not matter. Just that there WERE fish was good enough for me. I started to whip out the camera then realized I was here to catch fish with the rod, not the camera. I gave a loud whistle to get Dan's attention. I gave him a wave and pointed to the boil. We were both on it. Me casting a 1/4oz Kastmaster and Dan a swimbait. Dan had a follower and I had nothing.
Still trolling the minnow I was putting the casting rod away when zzzt, zzzzt, zzzzzzzz. FISH ON!! FINALLY!!! Not big but at least it was something. My first mendo striper. Hell, my first Mendo FISH!!!
Netted and clipped I circled around with a new minnow. BENDO again! Good fight. When I saw color and the size of the head I said, this guy's a toad. Dan hailed Sean for me. When the boat showed up I had to pedal out to it because the water I was fishing was very shallow. The first fish was 4+ lbs. The second fish was 6+ lbs.
"Biggest fish so far."
You gotta be kidding me. W/O a radio I had no clue what was going on with anyone else. It was 10:30 and there was plenty of fishing time left.
I didn't think it would hold so I worked hard on upgrading.
Three more hours of nada. I worked the shoreline further south for nada.
Came back to the spot where I caught the other two. No one else was around. Wind was blowing hard. I tail hooked a minnow and back trolled him peddaling into the wind to slow the drift when zzzzzzzzzz! Fish #3 hooked. Hooked him shallow but he took me deep. Best fight of the day. He did not want to come to the kayak. Finally got him landed. Upgrade on the 4lber for sure.
I look around and no one in sight. So I tow this thing all the back to Vinegar Pt., against the wind, looking for someone with a radio only to find the weigh boat was a done deal about an hour and a half ago. No radio=no clue.
Got this fish in at 2:30 and weighted at 5+lbs.
First two fish were good enough to get it done.
Packed up and left Mendo around 7 that night with the hopes of getting in a halibut hunt today. Not happening. Too beat.
Great time, great food and the GREATEST people ever!
Can't wait to defend at BAM V.

Congrats on the win, Tote! Thanks for the great story - for telling tales on yourself about what you left behind, almost left behind and such. It's nice to know that others suffer that kind of challenge.

So who won Big Kitty? Also, where there a prize for best slip-and-slide by a truck on the beach?  :smt003

Film?

Congrats also to Tote, Dan and Freddie. Thanks also to Sean for putting it all together. I had to cut out early but I still had a great time.  I paddled all the way south to the spot where I caught the Striper last month. I almost had the place to myself apart from 1st place Tote and 2nd place Dan. I was a bit further south when I saw "the boil" over by them, it took me a while to work out what was happening! I hightailed it over to where they were but had no luck there or anywhere else in the 9hrs I spent dragging minnows around. I did make some video, including Tote's Toad being battled and landed.

(I've just discovered both video and video editing software, so bear with me; I'm new to this!).

Thanks Sean for hosting.  My family and I had a great time.  I was already telling my wife about my strategy for BAM V and she pretended to be interested.   :smt044

I was with the majority catching no fish, but lovin it anyway.  I never saw a boil, I think my troll was to fast and that I should of done more mooching.

Got woken up by a generator because if that guy is up then EVERYBODY needs to be up.

Congrats Tote, this wasn't my generator because I left for fishing a little after 8am and Mama didn't turn it on for the hair dryer till about 10 am on Saturday Morning.  There was a motor sound up the hill that I think was some sort of maintenance building.

Looking forward to next year and waiting to hear who won the kitty, I did see a 10+# kitty get weighted today.

Really sweeeet and well deserved. Unfortunately had a business trip to New Mexico and missed the event. Sorry I you didn't have the opportunity to play some cribbage, then your victory would have been complete. :-)

Thank you, Sean for putting BAM together.  I LOVE hanging out with the NCKA crew.  I had a lot of fun.  I really hope there will be a BAM V.

Congratulations Tote, Dan, and Freddie!

Thanks Bill and Dawn for letting me stay overnight with you guys!

Looking forward to next year and waiting to hear who won the kitty, I did see a 10+# kitty get weighted today.

My kitty was 10 lbs 2 oz to 10 lbs 4 oz.  With 45 minutes to go, I was sure I'd take it but then Guitarzan pulls in a kitty that was about 15 lbs.  I'm waiting to hear his story.  Congrats Ben!    :thumright:

1. One of the tactics for a striper was to hug the shoreline. I believe that's how Dan (Dans964) bagged his limit.

2. & 4. Tried to capture the rainclouds hovering low over the lake...no rainbows this time.

3. Except when the afternoon breeze kicked up, it was like glass on the water. The wind wasn't too bad, although it did require extra paddling to maintain direction at times.

Congrats to all the winners and another huge thankx to the Whites for making it happen- two boats- thats just too cool! And those belt buckles!
So I caught nothing the first day but a food-buzz after the feast, the second day I was going with minnows and a hunk of fresh mackerel, and that was the ticket for a 14.7 lber, BIG kitty and a $50 pot Wooo-Hooo!!
Another highlight was that puppy dog of Frank's. What a cutie, Frank stuck her in my truck with me  every morning for the major puppy attack fest.
Bam under the rainbow, Frank with puppy, passed it to Mooch, and the kitty.

Congrats Tote! Your my hero. :smt004

Congrats to Dan and Freddie too...strong work by all the winners.

The storm Friday night was interesting. Glad I stopped by Lowe's and picked up two extra tarps.

Eric and I had a great time. We didn't catch a striper, but I did catch a small mouth bass. That was it for the day.
I was impressed how Eric handled a long, sometimes windy day on that little Mini-X. He worked the lake without a complaint.

Many thanks to Sean and family. You're "The Best" hosts.
Many thanks also to everyone for a GREAT pot luck. The dinner alone is worth the price of admission.

This is a fun group. I enjoyed seeing many of the members again and meeting many new people.

Warmest regards to all,
Al

What a fun time!  Thanks to all who participated.

Just as I finished setting up my EZ-up canopy the raindrops began to fall Friday morning...  and it pretty much kept coming down til Sat night.  The rain didn't keep us down though, since we were all in waders and paddle tops anyhow, and there were plenty of tarps up.

Friday I didn't catch anything, only had one bite.
Saturday I caught a smallie that was less than 2", too bad the weigh-in boat was off the water.
Sunday was my favorite day...  no, I still didn't catch anything but I got to tag along with Sean, Fishunter, and Guitarzan, and we later hooked up with Fishin Jay, Theresa, and Jim...  It was great to be right there to see Jim, Theresa, Adam, and Sean hooking up in front of me as proof that there were fish around, and it was a nice tour of a handful of likely fish holding areas.  Just for future reference, you know.

Random highlights:

-The smoked salmon candy, Killer!

-Bens fattie cattie, what a monster!

-The awesome beer, thanks, Sean!

-Comic moment of the weekend was upon hearing the puppy crying bloody murder around potluck time, someone called out, "I don't want any of what he's making!"

As always, a very fun shindig! Awesome weather, food, fire, and of course people.
The fish didn't cooperate for me. Even the minnows gave me the finger when they all escaped during the night from my Plano. No prob though, plenty of brothers with minnows. A big thanks to all!

Congratulations also to JR for catching his first Kayak Fish!! His Dad and older brother were very proud  :smt023

Thanks for the great pic of Adam (AJ).  He was humbled at seeing the the pic of the bigger one that you caught on Sunday.  My sons Adam, Steven and I felt right at home right away after meeting so many helpful people.  This was our first outing and the food was incredible and the company was fantastic.  We will never forget our time with all of you wonderful people and will hopefully see you soon.  Thanks again to Frank for letting me use your hobie (and everyone else that offered their yaks for us to use).  YOU ALL KNOW WHAT LIFE IS ALL ABOUT!

First time to any NCKA event and had a great time even though the rain dampen every thing but  my spirits. I arrived a little after noon on Friday and proceeded to set up my cheapo tent  in the rain. (What was I thinking?). After the inside got wet I tried to mop it up but puddles kept forming every where. Went out for a get familiar cruise and troll and met up with jprtroy but no hits in the rain.

Thanks to Allen and Chuck for letting me share thier ezup to stay dry that evening. Not much sleep that night with leaks in the tent and air mattress losing air. Up at five for a cup of Joe and breakfast in the van.(Why didn't I sleep in van?)

On the lake at 7:30 AM and no live bait for me. Two hours of trolling with a Wild Eye swim bait and a Yo Zuri and no hits. As I turn for a Hail Mary to the beach for some Brunch, Extreme Bendo on my old fiberglass rod with swim bait and a 3 to 4 minute fight netted a 5.5 lb. Linesider. Did anyone else hookup with a lure? No other action but a lot wind in the afternoon.

Fantastic food (Fried Bananas!!), good conversations, friendships  and a quality event. Thanks Sean

Carl

In typical Savage fashion... I missed the big prize by a hair. If there were 3 yaks up for grabs, I would've finished 4th. That's just how it goes for me. But, I did come home with a banging new West Marine VHF that I was sorely needing big time. Thanks Danglin for being able to hook us up with that goodie. Big ups to my boy up the road Tote for taking the buckle home. Sounds like your trip started out right. Usually, when everything seems screwed up before I get to the water... it's going to be a good day. And sure enough... your hardships were rewarded with a brand spankin' new yak. Way to go Bro... Also, we can't forget Dan for finishing second. Good job guys. Big thanks to Sean for trudging through all the BS to get this thing put together for us to enjoy. As usual, it was great to hang out and BS with everybody. And the food... oh the food... epic. Saw a lot of new faces this weekend and I didn't get to meet most of you. Hopefully, I'll run into you guys on the water some other time or at future outings.

I'd also like to thank Papa Bill and Dawn for sharing their cabin at Vitchy Spings with Melissa and Myself Saturday night. I didn't even have to set up camp for this thing... Made things real easy for me and not to mention... it made Melissa very happy that she didn't have to sleep on the ground. Thanks again guys.

I hope everybody had as much fun as I did at BAM.

First off thanks to Sean and family for all your efforts. They are greatly appreciated. Second, congrats to Tote, Dan, and Freddie!! Tote, your story had me rolling. Seemed like anything that could go wrong did, and then the mojo turned  :smt002 WTG!! wear your buckle proudly, and enjoy your new ride. Had fun running from shelter to shelter. Ben yours' definetly took the prize. All that burning man experience put to good use  :smt002 Took several "tunings" but it came around and was enjoyed by many. Enjoyed the tunes around camp too. Thanks Ben and Danglin for the campfire tunes. That was quite a bon fire for sure. That sucker would have been burning for a week, if you let it. Great seeing the familiar and always great to meet some new folks too. Sunday's weather was awsome, Saturday's built character. Man I really thought the boils were going to happen Sunday with FAC and overcast conditions  :smt012 I enjoyed some smallie action on Sunday, and just being out there on such an awsome day. Another good gathering for sure.

CONGRATS... Tote, Dan, and Freddie!

Earlier in the week, Tote asked me if the factory rack on their 4runner was adequate for 2 kayaks.  When I told him I didn't think so, he decided to drive their Pathfinder equipped with a sports rack more suitable for 2 yaks.  The funny thing is that he only was planning to bring one kayak to BAM.  I guess he thinking about the kayak he was going to win and have to drive back home.  Good planning Tote!

I had a great time despite the pouring rain Friday night and the slower than expected fishing.  But none of that really mattered, because for me, it was all about hooking-up with a group of good friends and meeting new NCKA'ers like Jedmo, Abman, and Bassmanben.

I think we out did ourselves on the potluck again.  That was unbelievable.  Who made the fried bananas?  That was off-the-hook along with so many other dishes like BobN's gumbo and Shimmy's famous Scallone (a delicious deep-fried scallop and abalone treat).  I finally got to try'em.

Thanks to everyone who made my dog Aki feel welcome.  I wasn't sure how she would react with such a big group.

Sean, thank you again brother, for all of your hard work in putting together another epic BAM.  You're AWESOME!

Rockhopper, I'm so glad to see you finally get the BAM (Bad-Ass-Metal) belt buckle you've been longing for....  Thanks to Shimmy!

Reading this post has been torture. It's the first time I've missed it in a few years and it looks as awesome as always. I missed the food, the fishing and hanging w/ da boyz talking story. Your hard work always pays off SCWA!

Big congrats to Tote, dan, and Freddie!

Sorry for the posting delay.  I was digging out of my work/waf backlog.

Well another great time despite tough weather Friday and Saturday. Fortunately the weather mellowed by dinner time Saturday.  This years potluck was truly insane...we have never had more or better food.  As always Mickfish seemed to be producing a never ending stream of delicious goodness...oysters to cream puffs..Mike's game is STRONG.  Shimmy's "scalone"...holy crap!!!  Jack and Bob both cranked out delicious Jambalya.  Kayakjack also had the pimpest kitchen I have ever seen.

This years campfire was also killer.  When Abman says he's bringing wood, he isn't kidding!

Shimmy went WAY BEYOND the call of duty, producing two BAM buckles.  Both were gorgeous.  If you EVER need bling, please go see Shimmy, he is the master.

I was going nuts on the weigh boat...hot, then cold, rainy, dry...sheesh the weather was all over the map.  I took a lot of pics off of the weigh boat.  Here you go...

like being with sisters&brothers from other mothers!  We all got soaked, but we came together when it was time to dry and do the BAM THANG that we do so WELL!.....from the second I got there, I knew we were gonna have a Blast!(just like the previous years, but  w/alil'xtra moisture)
We had dogs & a puppy to keep our spirits up, as well as the newbie blood mixed in to keep it somewhat sane.(don'tWANTtoSCAREthemOFFyet!) I learned a leason at these NCKA PotLucks(grab one of the "many" gourmet desserts and stash it for when you can enjoy it!)..cuz your so damned ready to explode from the Real_stuff!
like always and SHOULD never be undersatated!!
SBD(Sean) and his "first" family know how to host a gathering of madness and do it with style!..the outhouses even had running water(the one on the left had an UNDERWATER light-up thingy, that was so NASTY COOL!)
Too much food to mention, but those krazy-fried bananas had me in GOT MILK? Mode! :smt003

Paddles UP to the winners and all who participated(thumbs down on the ones who don't/didn't come up :smt012)we missed you(some of you anyway) :smt002

Mike/Tote~~ you deserved it man, your MENDO skunk is OFF!

Dan~~ Who taught you to fish the shoreline like that?(they sure must have known their s#it)

Freddie~~ I've heard you say you are Sick&Tired of 2nd Place and will be glad to let someone else take it....your such a sport bro!

Don't need no stupid AOTY Upgrades OR that Smallie(i was hunting for the whole trip)
I was in the best place I could possibly have been......can't wait to see you all again!!.....THANKS!!  if not for you,I'd be sitting on some shoreline waiting for a fish to swim by. :smt005

Thanks again Sean for all the Priceless memories this Tourney just keeps getting better and better.
Great to see all the new faces and hook up with the old.
Food was unbelievable the Jim the Bananas were off the hook.
Ditto on the fire Abman it was awesome.
Fishing was slow for me on Tourney day but I had a lot of fun just paddling around fishing with differant people.
On Sunday after the perfect Breakfast thanks to Sean, I was marking a lot of balled up bait and single fish hover about in 11 to 18' of water so I was fast trolling a shadrap and a Bijou Boogie nothing on the BB but the shad rap was the ticket and I got a couple each of stripers, catfish and smallies lost a Hail Mary brute Striper right alongside that gave me the shakes. I'll be back soon to do a little more trolling, they hit like a ton of bricks. Thanks for the tow Joel you are the man. We need more tourneys like this too much fun. Anybody up for a Lake Sonoma Over-niter this fall for LMB,Smallies and LL Steelies.

Looks like a great time to be had by all , congrats to all those who caught fish . Lots of pictures , excellent , reports are good but pictures are the icing on the cake ! Especially loved the ones of Bella sound asleep on "HER" yak , priceless !

Hopefully there will be a Bam V next year , I'll be there . Shoulder issues since last winter and being post op only 3 weeks now have kept me out of any action . Chewing at the bit , starting to watch for a good deal on a used yak , if not - think Santa might bring me a Mini-X for Christmas ! I have been a real good boy this year , quite contrary compared to my real nature .

Those belt buckles are real sharp , thinking I might sport one someday , sometimes better lucky than good ?

First of all, Thank you Sean and family for putting together such an awesome
NCKA event. I had such a blast even in the rain. And for my son who had never
paddled a kayak, I couldn't even write a word on the expression in his face. Now
he is begging me to buy him a kayak also. Many thanks to all who welcomed me
and my son making us feel at home. I greatly appreciate it. Talked about great
food. WOW! I hope that there would be a BAMV for those who had missed the
the great fun.

Big congrats toTote,Dan,and Freddie. Oh and guitarzan on the catfish. Thanks also
for the tune guitarzan and Danglin. The campfire wouldn't have been the same
with out the sound of the guitars.

Finally, it has been nice to put faces under the screen names of people of whom I
have met. I almost missed one person here whom I am very greatfull for lending
us his extra kayak. Thanks BrianG!

OK, so I am finally posting my report.  I also have way too many pictures to show, but those are in my online photo album.

On Friday, we didn't get out of Modesto until approximately 3PM due to my unpreparedness and my wife having to work late.  Had to take a couple of stops on the way up to pick up some Jumbo minnows at Delta Bait and Tackle, a short bathroom break and at In-N-Out for dinner.  Because of all this, as well as traffic and the rain, we didn't make it to the lake at 9:30.

Next morning I was up bright and early (5:15ish) and started prepping for my day.  Since this would be the first time for me fishing from a yak, I had to make sure I was well prepped.  Since I don't have my own yak yet, BrianG was generous enough to let me ride in his Cobra Marauder for the day.  Anyways, kicked off around 6:30 and started slow trolling randomly towards the point, enjoying the day as I went.

Around 8AM, I decided to stop next to the point and tie some rigs onto my spinning gear in case there were any boils in the afternoon.  As I was tying on a hook for my zoom fluke, my rod with a minnow goes BENDO, and starts ripping off line.  Immediately, I reached for the rod, and of course knocked the rod I had in my lap into the drink.  Luckily, I was able to grab it due to my lightning quick reflexes, and proceeded to fight the fish in.  He wasn't a big guy, but I weighed him anyways.  Thanks to Melissa for calling him in on the radio for me.  3lbs 6oz on the scale. Pretty fish, but skinny.  Let him go to fight another day.

I continued to paddle along and decided to follow the weigh boat, as he was heading back towards crappie cove.  When I got to Long Point, I saw all the hobies grouped together so I started to drift my jumbos there for no love.  I went around the bend and ran into Northern Boy & KzReelRods towards the back.  Also met up with Marvin (don't remember his handle) back there.  Northern Boy told me that Tote had just landed a pretty nice fish not too far from there, so I fished for a little while.  No luck and the wind started to kick up so I decided to get moving.  I went back along the buoy line at Long Point and just drifted downwind with my minnows in tow.  As I got back towards the cove, I had a BIG hit, but it didn't stick.  I figured it was about time to go in, so I started to troll back to base camp.  As my line turned to follow me, BENDO! another fish.  Again, skinny fish, about 22-23" long.  Put him on the stringer as the Weigh Boat had already gone in.

Got back to base camp about 45 minutes later thanks to paddling back in that rough wind.  Was met by my wife, who had been taking LOTs of pictures. Weighed in my second fish, who I had been towing for about 50 minutes, and let him go. He swam off slowly but I think he made it OK.

Overall, I had a pretty great day on all accounts.  The weather was not as bad as I expected, I caught a two fish limit.  Not bad for my first day fishing from a yak!

Thanks to BrianG for letting me borrow his Marauder, and thanks for the Whites for putting on the event!  It was a blast, and I was happy to make the trip. Next year I gotta get my own boat, and get my wife out on the water with me!

Finally getting around to posting my report!

First off I gotta give MAD PROPS to Shimmy for hooking me up with what Allan accurately described as "The Most Coveted Kayak Fishing Trophy in All of California" for my original BAM win. Shimmy is THE MAN!

My GF Vy and I showed up just before dark on Friday night and just hung out under the back door of my 4Runner. We chatted it up with "Sea Knight" for a bit then crashed out. I got a late start on game day, too. Woke up at 6'ish to pretty heavy rains so I crashed out until a little after 8 and didn't hit the water 'til almost 9. It was Vy's first time on a kayak so I took it slow at first, but she turned out to be a natural! Later in the day the wind had kicked up pretty good and I got a little worried, but every time I turned around she was right behind me. Anyway, I was super happy just to on my yak, since it was my first time on it since I butchered my thumb two and a half months ago. I was a little frustrated at first because as I trolled my way to Vinegar Point BOTH of my lines got snagged and broke off. Usually not a problem, but try tying two leaders without using your left thumb!. Took me almost twenty minutes. Usually takes me about four. After that I trolled around Vinegar Point marking tons of BIG fish, but had no takers so Vy and I paddled over to the boat in campground (Long point?) and meandered around there for awhile for nada. Towards the end of the day we paddled back to Vinegar Point where I picked up my skinny little kitty with the huge head. After that we called it a day and headed in.

The potluck this year was even better than years past...if that's possible. The chilli, tri-tip, Shimmy's fried scal-balone!, desserts, man! Soooo good.

Vy and I had a great time and she said it was nice meeting the few people she did and she can't wait 'til I get my other yak pimped out so she can fish, too!

Thanks to all, especially Sean and Shimmy! Hopefully we had enough of us out there to validate a BAM V. It would be a terrible loss if not.

Fishin Jay and I had a great time at BAM IV!  All the other reports are great...Congrats to the winners!  Great job!  I was able to get my first fish from my yak, a crappie...pictured on the post a bit up from here (thank you bassmanben)  Also the unknown guy with the 5-11 striper is my husband Fishn Jay.

Jay, the dogs (Bessie and Steve) and I all left Vallejo around 8AM on Friday.  We had a great trip up stopped at the bait shop pictured in Northern Boy's video (BTW great video).  Got to camp around noon.  Set up before the rain came.  Head out on the yaks to find some fish...no fish just some more rain.  As I was adjusting my paddle, I managed to break it.  I really need to get some better gear.

Headed in met up with guitarzan, mooch, Frank (and Bella), fishhunter and others at guitarzan's sweet set up.  I learned that my other lady friends were not making the trip.  But all is still good.  Got changed and headed into town Ukiah for my favorite Japanese food outside of Japan (OCO Time :toothy4:, recommended by Sean (THANKS))  highly recommend thier signature dish (Okonomiyaki).  Northen boy joined us, great food, great company!

Back at camp...rain was really coming down.  Pulled the dogs into the tent.  We all slept great.  Got up Sat. morning with a bit of rain coming down.  Jay asked around for duct tapet o fix my paddle and Paul R allowed me the use of an extra paddle (you just have to love NCKA people :smt001).  Got on the lake and started out.  Jay was great at helping me out.  Around noon I caught my crappie...almost threw it back, but Jay said it is good to eat..so it is in my freezer.

Stayed on the lake looking for more fish until 3PM.  Came in for the real fun, friendship and FOOD!  Wow!  Truely enjoyed the camp fire!  The dogs did too.  Thanks to those who posted picutures.

Sunday..back out on the lake after packing up.  Had a good hit..but no fish for me.  Headed out and stopped at the Blue Bird cafe in Hopland..nice burger and milkshake!  Thanks again to Sean for the recommendation!

Thanks for all the support on the lake and patience with my questions.  NCKA is a great group!  I think we need to get some more women in on it.

BAM V the buckle should go to a lady!  Probably not me!  But that would be cool!  Melissa certainly has put in her time on the water :smt061.  Great job with the kitties!

Thank you Sean for another great event.  You and your family are AMAZING!  Hope to see everyone soon!
