For Sale / Yakima Q clips & foot pads: Four Q13 clips $20
« on: October 31, 2019, 10:49:46 AM »
Selling two pairs of yakima Q 13 clips and foot pads ('A' size).

$20 for the lot. Pickup in Oakland or SF.

No rust, some of the finish has worn off, will want new rubber liners on the hooks. Came with a set of round bars I picked up from craigslist but weren't the right fit for me car. If memory serves, these were used on a Saturn of some sort, but Yakima's support docs are good for checking to see if these will work on your car.

For Sale / werner bent-shaft 220cm paddle on CL for $120

Not mine, but if anybody can deal with a paddle this short, they should buy it on principle. I would, but I need 230 or 240cm paddles.

As laughed at in my sellin' a car thread, I got rid of my old suzuki swift. Tried moving the old racks (generic amazon aluminum T track nonsense upgraded with stainless hardware), but they're just not going to fit the new car (Versa Note).

Looking at new and choking at the prices, I'm doing a little Craigslist shopping. Looks like the most economical way to do what I want might be a used set of Q towers/round bars and ponying up for the correct Q clips (q99 in my case). Done correctly, I should be able to get the kayak on the versa for under $200 instead of the next cheapest Inno option (new) around $325, or over $400 for aero bars.

If anybody's got any input on the matter, please do chime in.

as seen in How Do You Roll:

Racks have been removed--gonna try to get 'em on the new car, if that fails, I'll include them.

I'm asking $1500 on CL, but would happily sell it to one of youse for $1000 / obo / trade. Save me from the scammers, please!

Price dropping to $800 on CL. I clearly over estimated the local SF bay area market. Nigeria? Totally different story.

Bunches of pictures and an overly-verbose description of the good, bad, and ugly here:

General Talk / Folks that kayak with their dogs
« on: December 19, 2018, 09:47:43 AM »
How did you go about teaching your dogs to want to be on the kayak?

I haven't done this in forever (to put a time frame on 'forever', it was going sailing with my childhood dog on a sunfish and on a hobie 16, hobiecat, not yak).

The new puppers is still in waiting-for-parvo-immunity-to-kick-in isolation, so I've just been taking the WS Commander hybrid I got from Weimarian to the back yard and hanging out in it with the dog. Giving treats for hopping in and being still, that sort of thing.

Any pointers you've got would be appreciated. Our last dogs hated water, and it got in the way of some cool camping opportunities, so we're wanting to get this little beast into it early.

Thanks!

General Talk / Fun distance mapping website

Was curious how far my typical exercise paddle was this morning, but neglected to run the gps tracking app on my phone before taking off.

I thought, "I bet there's a site for that". Found this. Pretty cool.

Craftsmen's Corner / Poly boat repair: weld vs G-flex?
« on: August 03, 2017, 12:23:03 PM »
Hi all-

I'm preparing to fix a couple cracks in a poly boat. They're above the waterline, and appear to be stress cracks from some mounting screws being over-torqued into captive nuts that were molded into the boat when manufactured.  Totally non-structural area, and likely out of the way of any stresses that might come from use/ storage/ carry handles.

Wanted to ask if the hive has a preference for plastic welding or Gflex 450 as I've got both on hand.

Unless I hear otherwise, my plan is to weld.

I've got a harbor freight welding kit (the $17, 80 watt, soldering iron style one) that I'd use to melt some new #2 HDPE plastic from a homer bucket into the cracks (prepped by drilling out the crack ends, gouging a trough for the new plastic), then melting some of the steel mesh from the kit into the hull to reinforce, then melting some more plastic over the mesh.

Any input would be appreciated.

I've also got a heat gun with various deflectors and reducers available to me, and a couple propane torches (though my practice runs on 5 gallon bucket lids with that turned out, um, less than good...the results from the welder looked much better).

Thanks,
Ron

Not sure if this is a good deal or even a good seat, but it seemed like it might be both, so I thought I'd pass it on.

General Talk / Time to let go of some foster kittens
« on: July 12, 2017, 12:52:56 PM »
We've been fostering a couple kittens that we found in our front yard a few weeks back along with a litter mate that didn't make it. They'd been weaned, but were suffering from eye infections that rendered them temporarily blind, so we brought them and their mother in for medical care and fixing (momma's been fixed and released, kitties will be fixed and hopefully adopted soon).

We've been playing with them, so they're well socialized to people, but our dog's just not having this, so we need to rehome or surrender them soon. We would love to keep them together if possible, but understand that's a big ask.

One boy (grey), one girl (black), they're about 10 weeks old, just big enough to start climbing on things.

If anybody here might be interested, let me know.

Thanks,

Ron

Points off for no radio, but hey, everybody's OK and had their PFDs on.

Having been out in that area a lot in low tide, I'm surprised this doesn't happen more frequently.

For Sale / Malibu Mini-X on CL in SF, $200

Not mine, and I'll probably kick myself for not getting this myself, but it'd be for my wife and I know the short-boat-wiggle would piss her off in no time:

Hi all-

Looking for advice on getting rid of the travel trailer I ended up with in this thread: http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=70351.30

Turned out to be Waaaaaay further gone than I realized when I bought it. The term "load bearing turn-signal light" comes to mind. To the point when I removed the back wall paneling, and clipped said wire, the remnants of the wall framing and aluminum sheet just fell to the ground. Looks like it'd be simpler to do a total teardown and rebuild from the frame up if it's going to be usable, but I'm not that guy. I'm just seriously glad it didn't crumble on the highway. Note to self, stop being so damned cheap.

I'm inclined to break it up for recycling/ strip useful things out that I might be able to sell to an RV junkyard, and maybe sell the frame on CL as a utility trailer base and trash the rest. Not super inclined to try to move it as-is on CL as I'd hate to have someone try to move it and have it collapse in transit. Even on a flat bed this thing's probably going to be dangerous if it's not shored up inside and well secured.

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Ron

For Sale / There's a 14' Hurricane Phoenix to avoid on CL
« on: April 18, 2017, 05:55:50 PM »
https://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/spo/6093763547.html

I started this weekend off by buying the boat above on Friday; was stoked to try it out the next morning. Didn't get a chance to put any water inside to check for leaks when I bought it, but did before we were going to head out. Glad I did.

That boat is shot. Been repaired with touch'n'go foam behind the seat & the nose, has a forward-scupper-hole crack that's unrepaired, but the kicker is the adhesive between the two halves of the boat is failing and it leaks like a sieve, to the point where not only water, but sand and shell pieces were coming out.

Super nice seller (he let me return it, gave a no-questions asked full refund). I honestly think he didn't know what was wrong with it, and I suspect he'd let you know what's wrong with it if you got in touch, but I thought I'd post here to save you the trouble just in case any of you were thinking about picking this up.

If one were really good at repair and wanted to get this, then maybe, but only for small freshwater. I also saw some discoloring inside the hull of the plastic. Kinda reminded me of how some electronics' cases I work with will yellow and go brittle from UV light/ heat (this was under the tupperware hatch, not sure if Hurricane's plastic will do this or not. Oh, and the drainplug's plastic is powdering.

That is all.
