Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Wheeleez mini?
« on: April 12, 2018, 10:33:21 PM »
Anyone used the mini before? Jackson is sending me the new Coosa Fd. 115 pounds is going to require some wheels for sure.

But I'm cheap. The mini cart is rated for the weight, and is $100 cheaper.

Anyone use it and happy with it for heavier boats? Or is the extra $100 well worth it?

Fishing Tournaments and Events / DOTY 2018 prizes
« on: April 02, 2018, 01:52:57 PM »
We have an Orion85 as first prize (unless a boat is donated). We didn't know that requests had to be sent in the prior year so it was pretty difficult to get. I'll let DG post up what else he has commitments on. We're still working on more at this time, but it's a slow process.

Went out with DanK, Duane, and Gray Monday. Visibility was great at 30'.

Dropped down to 45' and shot a small ling. On my way up a nice ling came up and took it off my shaft. Had two fish stolen from me in the last week :'(

I did a couple more drops and found it laying on top of a nearby rock. They really blend in with all the small purple urchins now.

Headed back in and jumped in one last spot in 25'. Did a drop and didn't see anything, but on my way up two lines followed me to the surface. I shot the bigger of the two and hopped back on my yak.

Got him off the spear and put him on my stringer and noticed he was the only one on there. Whoops. Spent 30-45 minutes looking for the first guy that fell off and finally found him. Headed back in and waited to the rest.

Went out today with Brandon. The forecast didn't look great but when we got out there we found the ocean as flat as a lake with a solid 20-25'vis. We paddled out to a spot and found a ton of fish out. Nothing huge but lots of smaller lings, blacks and blues.

I did a drop and found a verm staring at me from under a rock. Shot him and came up.

Another ling followed me up so I shot him too. A bit later I saw a giant ling head swim out from one hole and into another. A couple drops later I found him and shot him in the face. After pulling him out I discovered he had a tiny body for such a giant head. Shot a 21" black

Brandon passed on the small lings but shot a couple of really nice blacks, one just short of 22". He popped a few scallops and then the weather started turning so we headed in.

My girlfriend, Jason O, and I flew to New Zealand last week where we met up with Greg G from Alaska. The first day way pretty terrible as my girlfriend was battling a cold and Greg showed up with what appeared to be the last stages of AIDS.

The second day Jason and I went out on our charter but the other two were too sick to even give it a shot. At the first spot we saw a few kingfish, but nothing big. Right before we left Jason had two giant black marlin swim by him but didn't feel like taking one. At the second spot Jason shot two kingfish.

The kingis were out in numbers at this spot. I did a drop and nailed my first yellowtail (and first pelagic period) on my pole spear.

We hit another spot where we shot some kahawai and pinkies and then went in.

The second day the others were able to give the charter a try but were both still pretty messed up from being sick. I woke up and felt like I had strep throat. We stopped at a giant cut back into a cliff that was only maybe 50-100' wide, but a quarter mile long and a couple hundred feet deep.

At another spot there were a dozen giant fish swarming the pinnacle. I did a drop and over my shoulder a big 40+ pound fish swims right into range and I let my pole spear fly and see an excellent shot with great penetration.

At first I thought I stoned it because it sank almost motionlessly to the bottom. As I start yarding it in the thing comes to life and tows me around. I end up right next to Jason who has one on the line as well, and a 10'+ bronze whaler shark is coming up towards us. After some fighting I get it up, brain it, and take it to the boat.

It weighed out at 41 pounds and some change, beating the current pole spear world record of 34.5 pounds.

On the third day I'm feeling like garbage but the other two sick people are feeling much better. I swim around buddied up with my girlfriend. She takes a couple drops and misses a few shots, but eventually lines up and gets one.

Greg gets a nice sized one, Jason gets another one or two, and we head in to a scallop bed. We spent about 20 minutes pulling up 30-40 scallops, which are free swimmers in NZ, and head in.

All in all a fun dive trip.

Here is a short teaser video of the pole speared yellowtail

Kayak Diving and Spearfishing / Productive day with Dank and DG
« on: February 09, 2018, 08:20:21 AM »
Went for a paddle with Dan K and Duane out of Albion. Vis was an incredible 35' and immediately the fish were out and ready to play. Just about every drop there were 1-4 lings out, although I didn't see any big ones.

We all left the first spot with one ling.

We found a pinnacle out in the middle of the open water with the top at 30' and the bottom at 50-60'. On my way up I checked the side of the rock and saw a big wolf eel staring at me. I did another drop and shot him.

I couldn't get the flopped to deploy because of the rock behind him and he pulled out. After another drop I sunk it into him, but again it pulled out. Disappointed we took off to another spot and Duane said I should come back and try on the way in.

The third spot was incredible. Massive clouds of blues and blacks. Shot a 20ish in black and another ling.

Had this guy pop up in front of me and get the heart pounding.

Duane said he saw a huge ling but couldn't find it again. An hour or so later he manages to find it again. He says its nice but not huge.

Found a nice pocket of scallops. Could have pulled a limit there but I didn't feel like spending much more time there so I pulled the biggest one I saw (8 1/4").

On the way back we paddle towards the random pinnacle. Somehow I look down and recognize the rock I was at from the surface. I hop in and dive right down to the little hole the wolf eel was in and he's still there!! I can't believe we even found the pinnacle again, let alone dropped right down to a soccer ball hole. I shoot him a third time and pull him up glad I didn't kill him for nothing.

Duanes "not huge" ling ended up weighing over 30 pounds! I'm not sure if he ever got a more official weight on it besides the 33+ pounds, but if it was he was less than 4 pounds away from Dan Silveiras record.

We all went home with nice stringers and scallops. Not often does a day seem to have everything go right, but this one did.

Fishing Tournaments and Events / DOTY 2018 (DQ's, rules, picture reminder)
« on: February 05, 2018, 04:38:17 PM »
I feel Jims pain. One good weekend of conditions and the entries are flooding in. Its awesome to see everyone participating and fun to watch the board constantly changing. Here's the board so far.

Please make life easier on me and Duane if you can. A lot of entries are including a single picture that can be a strain to try and zoom in to verify. The more the better. At least one overall and one close up of the tail would be great. Remember the mouth needs to be closed. You can have your fingers wherever it takes to close it for the picture as long as there is no obvious lip pulling or smashing them together hard to gain extra length.

Scallops

The rules state both shells must be visible in at least one picture. This is a no go.

Using that same picture as an example- Please use a straight edged item such as a knife to mark edges. An upside down bowl shaped scallop could have a lot more apparent length by holding the camera close.

This is a go but took some extra work and messages to make sure where the marks began on the trough since the first number isn't visible. Multiple pictures really help little issues like this.

Strong work, keep it up. Lets not let Rob L win. :smt044

General Talk / Florida?
« on: January 30, 2018, 10:49:34 AM »
Anyone here lived in or a spent a lot of time in Florida? We're considering a move there. Hoping to fly down for a week or so in spring and check it out. By the looks of it the perks to Florida are, its not California, theres good weather, its not California, nice beaches, its not California, no state tax, its not California, lots of wild life, its not California, and good gun laws. Also its not California.

 Any recommendations on some towns?

Looking for a place <1 hour to the water, but because of the geography it looks like thats everywhere.

My biggest concern is a town thats not a sh*t hole with a lot of crime.

Somewhere I can get a 2+ bedroom for less than $270k would be nice.

It looks like the diving is pretty legit there. Anyone know what kind of above land hunting options there are? Fishing? Any general advice?

Kayak Diving and Spearfishing / PB verm, Noyo harbor
« on: January 07, 2018, 07:54:14 PM »
Headed out of Noyo with Sarge and Duane today. It was a bit too rough to go very far, but we found some nice pinnacles that went from 15-55'. Duane is still recovering from the black plague, so he tried his first SCUBA dive in NorCal and shot some video. Visibility was incredible and Duane snapped this awesome picture of a drop I did hunting vermilion.

Just like last week, there were a ton of lings but they were all pretty small. I do a drop to 50' and see a small ling swim by, post up on a rock and turn my head to see if he's coming to check me out. He's coming towards me and behind him is the shadow of a verm. Popped him and came up happy. My biggest verm at just under 23"

Duanes lungs were jacked up and I was spent, so we moved in shallow. Sarge got a scallop, and shot a small blue and a small cab and we went in.

Went home and after some minor surgery was able to recover the otoliths

Here's the page for DOTY on Facebook. It looks like we'll be able to have it mirror the AOTY Facebook page, where entries and upgrades posted on DOTY will be automatically posted to the Facebook page to keep people up to date with the standings.

Kayak Diving and Spearfishing / 2017- A Safeish year
« on: January 01, 2018, 07:41:31 AM »
Thank you everyone for giving me an incredible year!!!! Editing this video was a trip, I can't believe all this happened since last New Years. Without good friends this year would have been nothing.

It started with me and Justin snowboarding and talking about going to Mexico. A day later we were hoping in a car and heading down for a month where we surfed, rode whale sharks, speared massive rooster fish, slept on the beach, got daily messages ,and ate lobster. What a month!

Shortly after I found myself in New Zealand spearing huge kingfish while fighting off mako sharks and bronze whalers. I can't wait to go back in Feb!

After a minor mishap for my summer, a trip to Vegas and a Lamborghini.

With a couple hour notice I was in my car heading down to SoCal to shoot massive bluefin tuna with Chris. The most incredible sight underwater! Also came home with a nice yellowtail.

After that a trip to Oregon with Jason where I did the most beautiful BASE jump of my life, and he got a nearly 11 1/2 inch abalone! Met up with Matt Mattison and Shannon Anderson for some more diving.

Loaded back up for another month in Mexico where Jack Johnson, Jeanne, Jason O'Donnell, Joseph Dimitriadis, Ryan Giammona, Tong, Kiley, Joe Missick, Hobie Ladd, and Shyla came down for some spearing.

After that me and Ryan  headed to Idaho where we both shot our first mule deer, hiking hard all day and soaking in hot springs in the evening. Stopped for a quick BASE jump at the Perrine and headed home.

Of course some skydiving in between it all, clothing optional. Stopped by an object for a jump and saw some awesome dude do a BASE cutaway!!

Went to Arizona for some free diving and machine gun shooting with Holly.

Went to Maui with Jimmy and Peter, and met up with  Jonathan Lata for some free diving.

Got some Lobster down south with Matt Mattison, Jason O'Donnell and Matthew.

Did one final ab dive with Holly where she got her first 10.

Whew.... time to start the new job and pay some of this off...hahaha.
