How thick are your farmer johns? I got a little .5 mil for xmas. If I combine that with paddle pants and a jacket will that be warm enough or do I need to get a 3 mil?

This is my layer system:

3 mil Farmer J works for me.

If I plan to do some trolling - I don't layer too much. A wind breaker over my FJ should do. (PFD helps the layer as well)

If I mooch - I layer more. Farmer J / fleece jacket/ light weight breathable rain jacket with hood (pit zips on the rain jacket helps - to help regulate body temp)

I carry a fleece jacket and a breathable light weight rain jacket in a dry bag just in case the weather turns.

I use my dry pants for lake or Bay fishing on warm weather days only.
But on really cold rainny conditions (in the bay or Lakes) = a neoprene chest high waders + fleece and breathable rain jacket with hood does the job!

3 mil will keep you warm if you fall in the water...  I don't put on the shoulderstraps and just leave it rolled down around my waist.  That keeps the part of me that gets wet warm.  If I fall in for an extended period I can put it on the rest of the way.  That keeps my torso from overheating or being restricted by the neoprene.  I've found that the shoulder straps can stress the back in a sitting position all day, and that getting squeezed by the neoprene on the belly can cause hellish heartburn too.
The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee
Superior, they said, never gives up her dead
When the gales of November come early.

my 2mil farmer john is a little to thin on most days.  I wish I got a thicker suit.

Like Joel, for cold or rainy days, I've started using stocking footed neoprene chest waders over a fleece shirt and polypro tights . The 3 mil thick waders fit skin tight like a wetsuit and provide just as much buoyancy.  And with a properly fitted PFD, not much water can seep in.  To keep me dry on top, I wear a breathable hooded rain parka.

The whole set-up keeps me nice and dry.  I really like it!
