Title: ARW YAKHOPPER 6-13-2010
Post by: Martianfish on June 13, 2010, 04:29:29 PM
All cleaned up and deslimed.  (1) I would like to say thanks for being able to participate in one of NCKA's events.  (2) I would like to say it was nice meeting a whole bunch of great guys and gals.  (3) I definetly wants to say a big thanks to the sponsors who provided the great gifts.   (4) I definetly want to say thanks to our NCKA brother(s) who helped set this event up.  (5) I cannot forget to say thanks to the 14.2lb, 33.5in halibut who allowed me to catch him, thereby winning this first able to participate event.  frozen herring, cut off head to make smaller bait, wanted to just catch any hali, even if small, didn't quite work out that way.

I won 2nd place today. Right at the launch I ask Yakhopper," if I catch a halibut at 12:55 are you going to let me bring it in?" Now this was all in good fun. Right? Anyway it was a tough bite today  Anyway, the water was fast and muddy and i was thinking that the tide will be close to the top just as the tourney ends at1pm. No love for me today up till 12:55pm. NO SHIT! The water was looking a bit clearer down by the flagpole so I though I would finish my day down there. Fish right till the fucking end! Tap, tap FISH ON . I radio Yakhopper that I have a fish hanging at 5 minutes to go. He says he will give me till 1:15 to have the photo or the fish at the table. I am fishing with 12 lb test and a 25 lb leader. I am a bit jacked to say the least. So i just try to relax and play the fish as I would any other time. Novofish and Naoaki roll up and cheer me on. Tony took some pics and I cant wait to see them. I net the fish , equalize it with the ball peen , string it. and start paddling for the launch. Laughing my ass off at my stupid good fortune and just thinking that I called it at the launch 5 hours earlier has me giddy beyond belief. The fish goes 32.25 and its good enough for 2nd place. I am blessed. I also met some new friends today. B.A., Da Blazer. We talked about going to high school in Oaktown and I'll be damnned if BA didnt go to Skyline too. Great day, great people. Ricci, you and your gal are just way cool. I'm so glad you guys are in NCKA. Craig. Bird and Mooch ,I missed you both today! Moochie I hope that you are feeling Ok today. I think about you every day I want you to know that. Your brother on the water and in Life, Craig

Sounds like a great day.  Congrats to both 1st and 2nd place finishers.  Sounds like a decent day.

Wish I could have made it today but instead spent the day watching my beloved Gigantes sweep the A's.

No love for me today. The wind and current pushed me down to Ballena Bay before I realized it and started a long paddle back. Didn't help that I tangled up with three shore fishermen lines during the paddle. Here are some pics.

Yakhopper, Thank you so much for the putting this together!!

I managed to catch a 26.5 incher!  Drove down with fishing buddy, Ernest aka Lucky13.  Started by buying 20 lively shiners at Mike's Bait in Oakland.  Got my only fish of the day with one of them. It was a slow over all BUT was a LOT of fun.  Met a lot of very nice people during the event.  Sorry no time for more details, gotta put my kid to bed.
Enjoy the pics and congrats to the winners.

Great day fishing with the NCKA.com club!

Thanks Eric and all the sponsors!

Congrats to those skilled enough to bring a Hali in!

I wish I could have stayed longer afterwards, but as a newbie it was great to meet more of my NCKA brothers and sisters!

Al, I'm gonna get a Mooch button soon! :smt001

Somebody helped me with my boat, Got a beer from someone, da blazer?
Please forgive my short term memory!

Craig, that was fun to see basically a Hali "how-to demonstration" OTW!

I learned a lot today. Hope to be doing the Hali beat-down soon :violent1:

Thanks to all, hope to fish with you soon,
Novofish

Here are some glory shots!

Well after hearing Craig pull off one of the closest hail marys' I've ever heard and fighting the tide all day. (WTG) I decided to take a run over one more spot. This being my first time to ARW, I wanted to check out as much of it as I could. As Craig mentioned the tourny ended right when the tide was really coming into shape. Not many fish were reported, but with the tide finally coming into shape I couldn't resist spending a little more time after the tourny finished. Well it payed off nicely with a 31"er on bait I caught locally.  :smt004 Made up for all the peddling. Better late than never. As much as I wanted to go socialize the water looked perfect and the bait were showing everywhere. There are times when everything just feels right and you know it's just a matter of time before your gonna get a takedown. It was the first time all day I felt that...... So most of my socializing was OTW, but it was great to see the gang, and to finally check out "The Wall" Eric, thanks for all your efforts, and I was happy to contribute to such a worthy cause. We are all thinking of ya Buddy...  A few weeks ago I smacked my nail at GMS4 and I've been waiting for it to release. Well Murphs' law. It started today. I'm on the water with a bandaid on it because it's starting to come up. With in minutes on the water, the bandaid comes off and now I've got a nail snagging on everything that's still plenty attached at the cuticle, but too sore to pull off. Catching on everything. Yeaouch!!! Can you say hangnail?

Thanks Eric for another fine event scheduled for very fine weather. I especially appreciated the wonderful bay conditions as I arrived home to put everything away in 97 degrees!
My first-timer friend Dave had a good time and was impressed by the good-sized halibut from the bay. Sadly, all of them were on other people's lines. We got our exercise, though, paddling for 90 minutes against that killer incoming flow. It was shocking how fast we drifted back down the wall. Tried Crab Cove for some slower drifting, but no joy.
I did manage to avoid the skunk myself, with a sabiki at the tires. The classic AOTY shot below would be good for a few points if I was in it, I guess. Note the gaff required for landing...  :smt001
I especially enjoy learning from all the experienced hands at an event like this, so I will be sure to try the launch area next time in more gentle tides.

Another fun day on the water with some super cool folks of NCKA. Thanks Eric
for all your hard work putting such great event together for all of us to enjoy.
Congrats to all the winners. Glad to have met new folks that day FishAddict,
B.A. and DaBlazer. DaBlazer, thanks for the cold one bro.

I almost forgot my little glory to share. HobieDave and I decided to head
back on the water after the NCKA bonding. Thank God we did. After dropping
down my first shiner in the water, not even a minute, my line started peeling
then the clicker goes off. FISH ON!!!! She wasn't very big but hey, it was dinner. :smt001 Then we fished some more till the wind picked up and that was it. Time to head home. Thanks a bunch for the left over shiners Ernest.
I shared some of it to the others as well so none was wasted.

So after a Long, Super Fun and Enjoyable weekend, Me and the Gf came home with the big SKUNK AND NIGHTMARES ALL NIGHT!!! Berryessa wouldve been great but the wind was None Stop!(In another report)  And ARW was totally cool and fun and worth the drive, but would've been better if Me and Christina just couldve Landed our Fish! Yes, believe it or not, we both hooked up in the last 2 hours of fishing, At The FlagPole! She heads in to go the bathroom and i continue to drift south. About 30mins later paddling back up to the spot, she approaches me all shaken up and in Disbelief! Says she just hooked up A Big Hali and got it to the yak but didnt know what to do cause she had NO NETT! i WASNT THERE! Nooooooo! Apparently, the lined snapped in the end! So we both continue to work our way back up to start a new drift and in about 18 fow and right at the point where the flagpole is BAMM, I get hammered! Grab the pole and begin the fight, 10 seconds later and after a hot strong run from the fish and turned, hooks just pop out! Dont know what happen and never seen it! Felt really good thow! All in All, This was the funnest and the best event I've/WE been to since i join Ncka and ERIC HANDS DOWN KNOWS HOW TO THROW AN EVENT! AWESOME JOB ERIC, CHRISTINA AND I ARE MUCH APPRECIATED AND GRATEFUL. Had a great time on the water and meeting others(Craig(rb), Don(da blazer), Naokai, B.A., Ernest(lucky13), Fishing addict, Martianfish, and Otobepelagic. Congrats to all the winners too! Craig congrats for that last min. hookup and way to stay at it hard like a diehard your totally kool too brother! Martianfish Congrats on 1st place Awesome fish and thanks for the smoked hali that was good. Don thanks for the Beer, you read our mines we needed that bro. Thanks to Eric for making another great event.  I didn't manage to catch anything until 1215 with a my first 27 and half Hali on a yak.  Seems like that was when the water slowed down a bit and it was getting down to 1pm so I'd decided to fish the wall and just drift back towards the opening of the launch.  Also managed to see IslandYak hook up with this 3fter leopard.  Great times when your catching fish!

Eric, thank you for putting this event together. It was great meeting so many new and old faces. Fishing was tough as usual, but I'm used to it.

Adam, thanks for doing the Hat thing for our buddy Mooch.

Mel, thanks for the fillet. Wife was total surprise I came home with fish ;) You certainly know your stuff. I've learned something from you each time we went out together.

Jed, I'm glad the shiners worked out for you. Btw, Mel paid for those shiners, so thanks Mel ;)

Ricky, nice meeting you and Christina. I envy how you hooked up with someone who share the same interests as you. Looking forward to meeting you on the water again. Sorry you couldn't land your fish, but at least you and Christina both hooked halibut. You bet I'm gonna keep at it. I won't fish anywhere else for halibut until I catch one at The Wall damn it!

And also, thank you Ben for letting me try the Adventure. Hope I didn't cause you too much trouble hauling an extra yak around. Really appreciated it.

Also want to thank you all for the donations. Truly touched by this incredible gesture.

Special mention to:

Eric for keeping the NCKA community torch lit up with these epic gatherings....
My little spoon Fishunter, for harassing everyone for donations....

Eric, thanks for another great event  :fish

My day started with the low tide and the only butt I saw was a not so glorious butt slide down the seaweed covered ramp buried underneath my yak. At least my misfortune served as a warning to others when people started adding, "hey! watch out that's slippery  :smt043" , to their vocabulary.
The wonderful weather and great company made the rest of the day top notch.
Martian fish, loved watching you boat that Hog, and thanks for the taste smoked halibut.

I have A damn Good time at Your tourney's Yak Hopper. And this one Was a blast. Thanks for the dogs and cold water/soda. a Much needed relief after fishing "The Wall" for two days. I would have loved to do more socailizing but after i heard those VHF's talking about 3 but's landed in 30 minutes you know i was right back on my yak< Going out as everyones coming in. I did a Whole lotta drifting. all for nada. I cant complain though. Any day out with the NCKA Brotherhood is sure to be a damn good time and this one was no different. I started the day by trying to keep up with the hobie O.G.'s O2B, RavensBlack,ChuckE, Jedmo, and avoiding flying banna peels  Im pumpin my prowler hard, for what seemed like hours, proud to just be keeping up when i look up to check Were the boyz are. Allen's eating a egg as he effortlessly peddals ahead and says "lets see you paddlers do this". Broke my whole spirit. Which is why i caught no fish. haha  :smt005. Great to see alot of Friends, Great to meet You To sledge! my new fishin buddy. Getting a little frustrated with the Hali's this year. But hey thats why its called fishin  :smt002 A Special to thanx to Alshobieoutback,Uncle fishunter, Yakhopper for the bad ass event. Congrats to all the winners and those who just landed buts. Everytime on the water at a well orchistrated event like this is a win for me. Im sure im not the only one. but a 'but would be nice lol  :smt100

Hey Craig,

Great job on that Hali!
I just couldn't let those Kodak moments go un-photographed the other day!
They truly defined the words Hail Mary. (or is that Hali Mary)
If you want some of those pics in full res for prints let me know!

Tony - novofish

Thanks again to all for a fun time!

Eric,

Thanks for setting this up.  It was fun even though I got there pretty late.  Too much partying the night before gave me a terrible headache.  It was nice meeting a few people I've never met before and seeing a few familiar faces.  I'll be looking forward for your next event.  I don't go out fishing very much so I'm still learning a lot of where to go with my kayak.  Now I know I can handle ARW as long as it is not too windy.

Congrats to Martin, Craig, and Bob for catching the big butts, and congrats to all who caught fish when most of us (including myself) got skunked.

Eric... Thank you so much for putting on the ARW Halibut Derby.  It's my personal favorite derby in your series. :smt003

I just wished I had more time to hang out and meet some new folks.
