Title: Anyone paddled the Prowler Big Game 2?
Post by: E Kayaker on August 03, 2016, 12:21:03 AM
I'm looking for information on how the BG2 paddles. I own a Tarpon 120 which is not a speed demon. I would prefer to not go to an even slower yak. The BG2 is longer and wider, which I hope would at worst add up to a performance similar to my 120. Anyone have time in the seat of a Big Game 2?

I have the older Big Game myself and have test paddled the Big Game II. t's a beast. Unless you are a bigger guy who really needs that added stability, it's overkill for an average sized paddler. The stability is amazing but you expend so much energy juzt trying to accelerate from a dead stop. Once it gets going, it's less laborious.

If you don't want to sacrifice any speed over your Tarpon 120, this is not the boat for you. My girlfriend's Tarpon is so much faster and way more enjoyable to paddle than the Big Game.

I don't know if this helps you, but I recently picked up a Predator MX and coming from a Tarpon 100 its a huge difference.  The boat is a pig and it surely will be a PITA in the ocean but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't looking forward to it on the river and in the sloughs in Sac.  With the right paddle (which I finally bit the bullet and paid for) it hasn't been bad at all.  Just a bit more cardio I'd say  :smt004

The MX is just as wide and heavier than the Big Game 2. I'm guessing it would be worse.

As I look around it seems my needs are falling through the cracks. If the Tarpon 130X came with a rod pod instead of a motor mount,  I'd be buying one this weekend.  :smt009

ever thought about going to a tarpon 140, fast, stable and all around work horse and not much more weight than the 120. but for a little more weight and more stability(wider than the tarpon series) a jackson cuda 14 would also be a good choice, center hatch for rod storage, lawn chair seating for all day comfort, just my .02, cameron

Yes I fished Albion in a 140 test paddle. It was bumpy out there and I kept my leg over the side trying to stabilize it. I'd like more stability without having to get carried away with weight and size.

Ever think about a Old Town Predator 13?

Ever think about a Old Town Predator 13?

Yes. It's a 1/2 inch narrower and 16 lbs heavier than the BG2. I'm not sure if that is better.

I bet the OTP 13 paddles better than the BG2, but way slower than anything you borrowed from me last week.

I think you are far too hung up on inside rod storage and I bet most here will say the same. Start a poll and ask who does and does not store rods inside for landing.

Where was it last year, Anchor Bay? It was a high surf for the tourney and someone tried to go and got their stuff thrashed on the beach. Others that answer the poll might have more confidence in their surf landing abilities and others might have more ability. I'm not sure that would help me.

Hey traildad, wanna try my moken 12.5 out? The center storage can be cut out for a rod pod, and it doesn't void warranty or anything according to Feelfree.

Its very stable. Fast enough for the salt, and weighs about 70lbs

I have the Predator 13 and XL. I would never take it out in conditions I felt I had to store my rods for landing or launching. It's just too beastly.

If there is possibility of rough launches or landings, the Trident 13 is what I take.

Have you considered adding alternative storage for your rods on a kayak that you like?

You can lash your rods against the hull or bow of the kayak with bungies, which would protect the tips pretty well.  The addition of a couple of bungies would be enough to secure your rods along the centerline of your kayak.  Or, Hobie has a kit which add that allows the rods to ride along the edge of the hull (not ideal). You can also remove the reels and stow them if you want to go that far.  Just a thought, since it's probably easier to find a kayak that meets most of your needs/wants.

Sounds like it's worth considering.

Maybe. I'll see where my search takes me. Thanks.

Cool. I fished with you last year at the port, we were looking for your bait bucket in the dark  :smt006
