Title: *results pg 36*Simply Fishing Tournament 9/27/14
Post by: fishkraft on April 21, 2014, 07:34:00 PM
ONLINE REGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED.

The 2014 Simply Fishing Tournament

Sept 27th @ Timber Cove Boat Launch

The theme of the tournament is simplicity... old school kayak fishing. Nothin' fancy, just the angler and his/her gear, testing their skills.

To that end I am gonna level the playing field by limiting each angler to one rod and reel and three lures (provided), everybody fishes the same three lures, no bait, no scents.  No mechanized propulsion systems, no sails, no fish finders, no GPS, just a kayak, a paddle, landing gear and safety equipment. Simple, right?

Weigh in will be at high noon  :cowboy_cool:

Now, before we go any further I (and you) should say a huge thank you to this year's major sponsors, Stealth Performance Products, The Headwaters Kayak Shop and Paddle Panama. Between the three of them (with a little help form the tourney) they've have come up with the best first place prize I could imagine. Please go to their Facebook pages and say thanks, if you would. And while you're there "LIKE" them if you like them.

Includes airfare to and from Panama, transfers from Panama to Jaque, 4 nights in a beach house in Jaque on the Darien Coast, the house is comfortable with AC and in suite bathrooms. There will be Stealth kayaks provided there. It will include food and basic beverages and a support panga for two of the 4 Days kayak fishing. A visit to Biroquera Indian Village up Jaque river if time and conditions permit. Anglers must bring their own fishing tackle. Some restrictions regarding dates, times etc. will apply, please contact Dan at The Headwaters Kayak Shop for details

So, the lures... this year rather than choose my favorite and most successful colors I asked the
manufacturers to put their best foot forward and choose the color that they'd like you to fish in this tournament.

As I mentioned in another thread BIG HAMMER has stepped up BIG TIME. Thanks to Pro Staffer Craig Davis, Pete Wolf has donated all the swim baits for this years tourney. The bait they choose is the seven inch Reckless Toast. Check it out.

I'll provide a red 4oz shad head (ala Andy1976) to go with.

Hell yeah! www.B2squid.com droppin' bombs! Once again, thanks to Kelly and LaWana Schultz B2 Squid is donating a five inch squid body rigged on a 3oz leadhead for every one of you. Their color choice this year is  Chartreuse.

And of course as usual Andy1976 (big hearted, jig pouring god that he is) has offered to help out again. This year he donated these beautiful eight oz. diamond jigs for all you iron slingers. He just put them in the mail so I haven't seen them yet but he sent me this photo awhile back. Pretty sweet, no? He chose Black and Gold... maybe BigJim will come play this year ;)

Alright more sponosrs, more prizes.

Bending Branches has one upped themselves from last year with not one but two new Angler paddles

How about a seal skin covered wood frame kayak. Those would be cool just don't tell PETA.
One benefit would be less seals.  :smt006

Everybody gets the same 3 lures. Bring lots of leader material. It's a blast. When you lose all 3 you are done. Maybe the best test of skill on a level playing field. People who Fish TC all the time have a slight advantage but it didn't help them last year.  :smt005

Based on the responses , we might need a bigger launch area. Ocean Cove is right up the way! Timber can be a littel challenging with a big crowd.

That's Ruben's call but we had 50 contestants last year and it was no problem. Many parked on the highway and Ruben got a sweet deal from Brenda and the Timber Cove Inn.

I remember last year the location was revealed just before the tournament. I have been wondering if this year it would be held at the same location or if we would get a new location announcement like last year. Is it confirmed it will be Timber Cove again?

The 180 foot mark is a long ways out there. You'd have to really try to exceed that. Put a mark on your main line if you are really worried about it.

Title: Re: *Updated*Simply Fishing Tournament 9/27/14
Post by: RacinRob on August 28, 2014, 08:38:20 AM
If there was a real group area that might be ok, but there isn't. It is a free for all there. We don't know where the tourney is yet, do we?
Title: Re: *Updated*Simply Fishing Tournament 9/27/14
Post by: E Kayaker on August 28, 2014, 09:38:51 AM
When I was there last weekend a AA group had taken over most of the campground. I got "overflow" that was parking on the side of the highway and pitching a tent for $40. If enough people reserved, the campground itself would be the group site.

You are right, we don't know where we are fishing yet. Assuming it is in that general area I will need to camp Friday night. From what I hear we could reserve at several different campgrounds and be close enough. I'm thinking more about having a place to camp than having a group site. How did it work last year?

Camp at OC dude. Tons of room and you won't get your ass run over on the side of the highway.
2 minutes away from wherever Ruben decides where the tourney will be.

It was good seeing you Traildad. Nice ling too. You really can't camp much closer to a beautiful launch if you are going to timber cove. It's a small area. I think you did well on your choice. To camp elsewhere and then get up and drive to TC would have been counter productive. Don't let them get you down.

No worries. The side of the road is pretty wide there.  :smt044 I'm mostly thinking it would be nice if those that are camping could be able to reserve a spot so we don't have to rely on first come first serve, and we could be in the same camp.  I don't know what the normal availability is for first come first serve in that area on a late Friday evening. With no cell service, it would suck to be driving around trying to find a spot, or camping farther away than necessary. I'm sure it will all work out.

There are nicer campgrounds but TC has a special charm that the others don't have. Brenda has been good to us and charges a reasonable price to launch and camp.

Yes there are but if you consider the cost coupled with the added set up/tear down/drive to TC ,you have it in a nutshell. Its cheaper in the long run, saves time and energy and if you don't look towards the road you have a world class view.  Just sayin' No harm, No foul

Registering after work today.  Going to try to convince one or two other guys to join the party!  Any recommendations on how early I should arrive if I were to commute from Petaluma that morning?

Glad you are coming, the drive from the Petaluma Fairgrounds to Timber Cove is almost 1.5 hrs, you might allow another twenty in case of slight construction delay, or slow vehicles, or for the location being further north if that be the case. If you mean when should you be at the launch, why not before gray light?
be seeing you, Amos

I've got one free registration avail courtesy of Cowman. If you're holding back because of finances please P.M. me. If you know somebody who is you can nominate them via P.M. as well.

Thanks Cowman!

As I mentioned in another thread BIG HAMMER has stepped up BIG TIME. Thanks to Pro Staffer Craig Davis, Pete Wolf has donated all the swim baits for this years tourney. The bait they choose is the seven inch Reckless Toast. Check it out.

Toast is my favorite BH color by far. That iron looks sweet too. I'm looking forward to dropping these down and see what comes up!

Do we have a location nailed down as of yet????

BUMP for Location

Ok after many miles and much discussion with fellow anglers and camp hosts. It turns out the best place is the simplest (whoda thunk???). So once again the tournament will be held at Timber Cove. Brenda has generously offer discounted rates again, as follows:

$5 day use (includes launch and parking) normally $8
$35 Beach camping (includes day use and launch) normally $45
$25 Bluff camping (includes day use and launch) normally $35

You don't think ten people will be camping? I suppose its possible, but there is no way I want to leave home at two in the morning so I can be on the water early. I'll probably stay till Sunday if the weather is good.

  Where is traildads reservation?

When I was up there for the safety seminar I asked about making reservations. She said she will take reservations for groups of ten or more people. I thought if ten people wanted to camp we could be sure of getting an actual spot in the campground no matter how late we arrive. I got there late before and had to camp in "overflow" which amounted to camping on the side of the road with access to the campground. I had a tent cot so it worked, but having a real spot reserved would be even better. I don't know how many spots they have, but I bet it isn't many more than ten. It seemed they were willing to let everyone camp that wanted to camp. I just don't know how it would have worked for someone that needed more room to lay out a tent. They had squeezed tents in all over the place that weekend for an AA group. If we can't come up with ten people, it will be show up and take what you can get, with the advantage going to the guys that can arrive Thursday or Friday morning.

Oh I'm sure she will take all ten of your guys money! Just the same as she will from anyone else that shows up!  About the best she can do is block off a section for ya on the beach for your 'reservation' if this many people are going to show up.
There wouldn't be much point to making a reservation if that didn't get you a reserved actual site. The other people that showed up would be overflow and choosing from the side of the road or crowding in between sites. Those 10 sites would be taken the same as if we were parked in them. If we get ten in time, I will confirm this when I talk to her.

:smt006 Somewhere in my online travels a saw a picture of the diamond jigs Andy1976 made for the tournament wow,  :smt007. Really high quality product. On the Potluck side De aka Mrs SuperVato has agreed to make a large and delish peach/berry cobbler, she likes to see us enjoy them. I predict it will take a big, big fish to win this one and fishing will be outstanding. Come join the fun the more the merrier.

This should be fun. With a single largest fish format, this will most likely be a right place, right time scenario. It's anyone's game... I'll be wearing my luckly rabbits foot.

Those jigs look bad ass!

The current has been to the north and fast the last two weeks.     I had 8oz of lead and still had trouble keeping it down a couple days recently.   When I did get it down, it drug bottom and continually got hung up.    Would you be disqualified if you put the B2squid and iron on one swivel and fish that way?  Or for that matter, any combo of the three lures which would give you extra weight.

Yeah seems pretty straight foreward to me.. :smt044

Yes, better safe than sorry. It would suck to have to DQ the biggest fish.  So let's try to get this all cleared up.

You may only use what I provide. With the exception of connecting tackle such as swivels, snaps, clips and extra leader material.

NO TACKLE BOXES/BAGS WILL BE ALLOWED.

Please remember the idea is that you all fish the same gear so that nobody has an advantage other than skill.

If you have any more questions please post them.

I'm going no matter, with the hope sat or sun will allow me a chance to get otw. It's about time I pushed the envelope a little on my surf launches. Just trying to scare off the competition? Causing no small level of panic!!! Timber has a sheltered launch right? or are we going head on into the surf? Never been there so what is the ACTUAL danger level at launch and land... On the water we are corks but launch/land how is it there

It can get big inside the cove during sets. Your gonna have to time both launching and landing.

The launch and landing should be fine. The predominant swell is rotated to the north and the cove should be protected. It's the west and southwest swells that close out the launch. Go north in the morning and plan to kelp anchor most of the time. The WX can be way off this time a year after a storm front. It could be FAC. Like Craig said, be ready to launch at first light, rig for a wet launch/landing, take a good look at the conditions for 5-10 minutes, then make the call.

*****Important Tournament Update*****

Please be advised that in the event of unsafe weather conditions the fishing competition portion of this event MAY be canceled.
Due to the unpredictable nature of our coastal conditions the final decision will not be made until 5:30 a.m. the day of the tournament.

Should this become necessary the grand prize would become the fist place raffle prize. As with all other raffle prizes you must be present to win.

I do not/will not take this decision lightly. All of the members of this great NCKA community are way to important to be put at risk for the chance to win ANYTHING. I could not live with myself if someone were to be injured, or worse, on my watch.

So please come on out, hopefully the weather will cooperate and we will proceed as planned. If not we'll have a great time shore fishing, hanging out, drinking beer (or hot chocolate) telling great fishing stories and bitching about the weather.

In either case the raffle/awards will be held after the potluck which will begin at 3:30 p.m.

Good call Ruben!!!

Once again the voice of experience has spoken.  I took a look at the NOAA forecast for that region and it does not look good.  As GB2 says, you never know till you get there.  Could be decent conditions, and I hope the weather gods smile upon you.

Most important is remembering in the ocean  it's always Safety First no matter what. Especially in terms of a tourney, wherein an organizer takes some defacto responsibility for the health and safety of participants.

Wish I could be there fish fro Redtail Perch if nothing else.  But my UCSC move in happens this week, so I'm working both days  ;-(   .....

If the swell is from the south timber cove is washed. If its from the NW the cove stays pretty calm at the launch. Until you get out to the north end point. Once past that its on. 5 ft from the NW is nothing. Its the 20 + knot winds that will make it nasty. Good call Ruben. Listen to your gut and take a check with the ocean experienced guys. If its too messed up it will be a great day for some rough water launch and landing practice.

Hmmm, Going with that... If cancelled... Why couldn't all those PAID, Win in the raffle there or NOT? I assume your not selling extra chance tickets to the raffle. 71+- tickets and prize delivery shouldn't be a problem. (no Kayak/huge prizes) What do you think Ruben? Odds are that if the WX worsens and this thing gets cancelled, we could play from home and save $200.00 -300.00 in gas/camp to spend on AOTY opportunities.... I for one, NEED to fish... (AOTY, KAYAK WARS) Can all that PAID (71+-) play raffle even if not there?

Ok, lemme try to answer your questions and clarify my position. Obviously, I can not control the weather  :smt005 . In life things happen and we do the best we can to plan for this (such as move the event to Sept instead of Nov in hopes of avoiding weather issues  :smt010 ) and minimize the effects (what I'm doing now). In this case I am taking into account, as best I can, all of the divergent interest of a broad based community. What is best for one or a few of you will inevitably be bad for one or a few others. Also in the creation of this event I have incurred some expenses which I can not recover. All of which leads me to the following:

1.) The tournament is not canceled as of yet and may not be. If the tournament is canceled (and ONLY if it is) and you do not wish to participate in the raffle you will be eligible for a credit towards entry in the next Simply Fishing Tournament.
2.) This is coastal kayak fishing, I can not accurately make the call to cancel until I am there, on the day, to see the actual fishing conditions. That's fishing.
3.) IF it is necessary to cancel the competition, only the paid entrants will be eligible to win the grand prize. One ticket per entry.
4.) Just as with a kayaking fishing competition, you have to play to get the pay (must be present to win)

In service and humility,
ruben

I'm sure there were probably twenty more questions posted while I was considering this response. I'll try to answer them as soon as I can. Please forgive any delay, I am still putting hooks on jigs and eyes on lead heads and packing and planing for hosting a fun and certainly exciting event.
Title: Re: Simply Fishing Tournament 9/27/14

Under which conditions will you cancel the event?

$25 and a tank of gas might not be a lot for some of you, but for me it is close to my monthly fishing budget. If you don't want to refund those of us who bail because you are talking about canceling the event that's fine, but please don't make us show up just for the chance to win a raffle.

I was typing this before I read your post Ruben. I respect what you said in its entirety.

I don't really want to fish in gale force winds. I have and it sucks. The reports I see are wind early. I don't want to take the chance of maybe having it lay down for a couple hours.  I would rather fish than sit on shore. I would go out in the conditions to compete too. If the competition is stopped I will just stay home or fish local, or if the report Fri night looks bad i will stay home. 8 hour drive round trip to fish in what I'm sure will be crap is not worth it to me. You all think all I care about is the prizes. I still don't care about prizes for fishing tournaments. I'm there to win even if for a trophy. If there is no competition I see no need to go and fight those conditions. The trip would be cool to win if it was for two. I would rather win one of the other prizes anyway. Again, not interested in driving 8 hours for a drawing and to sit on shore and drink beer. Just my thoughts.

Magic Seaweed nearshore forecast looks a bit less dramatic than the NDBC forecasts for Saturday.  Up to 16 knot winds close to the coast, might be different from the other forecasts because the NOAA are for waters along the coast all the way out to 10 Nautical Miles.

NDBC Forecast - http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/data/Forecasts/FZUS56.KMTR.html
Key for interpreting scale on attached image - http://www.spc.noaa.gov/faq/tornado/beaufort.html

First I wanna say thanks to you all for handling this so well. I really do this for all of you as a thank you for he way you all welcomed me and continue to welcome others to this generous and friendly community.

Now, I think it might be time to think about postponing. I wanted to avoid the juggling that may ensue and I fear that some, if not many, would be unable to reschedule. But, my fears aside, I think it's time to discuss it.

Let's start with Sunday. First pros and cons. Then maybe I'll be able to come up with a pertinent question or two for a poll.

Ruben I'm not interested in money back at all (would love to get the lures!!!!) If rescheduled, would be there! Such an awesome prize deserves a contest and a winner (pictures to boot) it's your baby put it to bed or leave it as is... I gotta fish, I gotta be safe, I gotta admit to my lack of experience this Time...

I think Ruben is being more than fair to try and consider all options.  But I think he has it right, and really has no obligation to change a thing.  We all know the situation around tournaments by now don't we?  No one can change the weather, or pick a perfect date for a tourney.

Agreed. I just objected to the ideas of tournament morning cancellation notice and needing to be there (even though we registered) to be eligible for the prize if it goes up for raffle.

I'm all for keeping it a go and letting individuals decide whether or not they want to launch.

Honestly though with the tourney being single biggest fish it's almost like a damn drawing anyways. Anyone that is on the water has the opportunity to win this event. Just being in the right place at the right time and hitting a lingzilla on the noggin.

I can understand where your coming from on everyone entered the tourney but if he gives the green light and your not there you have no chance anyways. If it gets canceled the people there were there and ready to fish.

I plan on being there Saturday morning and holding out hope it's not as bad as the forecast. I'll be ready to fish if you give the go ahead Ruben and if you call it then that's fine too.

Whatever you decide to do Ruben I will support your decision.

I could do sunday if it was changed to then, but I say let it roll Saturday and those who want to launch go for it.  If it gets cancelled then those who make the drive are eligible for the grand prize.  Rescheduling for another month could be difficult for folks driving from 5hours or more like myself and Adrienne.

Same plan here unless notified earlier.  Either way we are driving south and fishing freshwater this weekend anyways.  Time to give those folks at the top of AOTY a run for their money.  I don't know what I was thinking when I caught a 20" large mouth, a dink spot and the surf perch I caught in the winter by not putting on AOTY just for the extra species as well as my CCKF AOTY which would have me at 8 species and near the top of the scorecard.  Anyways,  I do see a Santa Cruz Raptor in my future.  :smt003 :smt044 :smt044 :smt044

I am fine with whatever Ruben decides. Laura and I will be at Ocean Cove in the 5th wheel for the weekend, so if I don't get to fish, I still WON!!!! Ruben, you can't make everybody happy all of the time; just do what you want/think is best. Come by OC, look for the "Nemo" flag and stop by for a beer/wine or soda :smt003

I don't think I'll show. Was really looking forward to it. Sinuses have me feeling down the last couple days. Not sure I'm up for 2.5 hours drive plus a rodeo. Launch should be OK but no wind/wave block once you get out. Get a partner or better two partners and hang together. People are going to splash.  Layer up under those drysuits. I have faith that Ruben will make the correct call at launch time. Hope it lays down and you all have an awesome time!

1.) The tournament is not canceled as of yet and may not be. If the tournament is canceled (and ONLY if it is) and you do not wish to participate in the raffle you will be eligible for a full credit towards entry in the next Simply Fishing Tournament.
2.) This is coastal kayak fishing, I can not accurately make the call to cancel until I am there, on the day, to see the actual fishing conditions at the time of launch. That's fishing.
3.) IF it is necessary to cancel the competition, only the paid entrants will be eligible to win the grand prize. One ticket per entry.
4.) Just as with a kayaking fishing competition, you have to play to get the pay (must be present to win)

In service and humility,

Hey Don, post up a pic around 5pm this afternoon  :smt044 :smt044

I adopted a policy after I think it was the 3rd Albion 2011.

If I wouldn't fish it on a regular day, I won't fish it during a tourney. I've demonstrated that a bunch.  :smt044

That forecast is absolutely hideous.

This is what I was saying according to Don's picture. Calm inside when it's coming down from the NW. Even Brenda's dad used to say when we called all time over the last forty years. " looks good in the cove. " then we would get out there to a whole different story.

I have a large griddle that will fit on the 3 burner camp stove I'll be bringing over.  The stove has the option of the griddle or a BBQ grill over 2 of the 3 burners.  I planned on the 3rd burner for the deep fryer you requested earlier.  I will also bring over a weber kettle with briquettes that will be available.

Always ready for good cookin!

I would like to add a tournament cancellation contingency idea for those who plan to fish.

Would those who plan to fish be allowed in the event of tournament cancellation, to give their raffle ticket to another angler? If so, then I propose a MBF of sorts where those who fish give their raffle tickets to the AOTD as defined by the simply fishing rules.

Thoughts?

My work day went way longer than expected (8pm,) and left me with a truck full of rubbish. With no room for the yak, I am forced to not go and make a super fun run to the dump in the morning.

I am sorry I cant make it. I was looking forward to seeing you guys and fishing with everyone.

Looking forward to hearing how it goes,

Aloha,

Isao

Ohhh Yeah! It was a beautiful day. I left early for personal issue but it was spectacular. Rubin and his family did a 5 star production. I believe Ravensblack was in the lead unofficially with a 9.5 lb Ling cod. It was scarce fishing as they were all hiding from the storm surge. Many good people at event all pitching in a helping all who needed it.
Congradulations and many thanks to all who made this happen :smt001

Thanks for putting this tournament together Ruben.  Adrienne and I had a good time and we both caught some fish.  I couldn't find a big ling, but I  did weigh one in at least.  The weather was great and the water was plenty fishable till about 10:30 when the wind started to really kick up.

Congrats to Craig for the win. I hope the trip to panama is a blast. Congrats also to Ruben for putting on a fine tournament. I'm glad the weather didn't cancel the tourney and I hope there weren't a lot of people that let the forecast stop them from fishing.

The water was a little bumpy and as I was launching someone came in saying they were a bit seasick. I also ended up not feeling great but I lasted until I lost all my lures. I never got a bite. Thanks Great Bass 2 for showing me around. The pot luck was another in a NCKA tradition of eating great food until I could eat no more. I had planned on serving burgers. When I got up Saturday morning I found that something had unzipped a canvas bag and eaten all my hamburger buns. I went to get some at the store down the road only to find them closed due to a family emergency. I got lucky in the raffle and won a nice EGO sliding net. Sweet! Thank you to all the sponsors that contributed to the event.

Here is a video I shot on the water showing a little of what the conditions were like.

I had fun! I was worried all night about wasting my time driving here and lnot being able to fish but once I got to Bodega I saw how flat it was I got excited!  :smt007  Fishing was ok , started off losing my b2 squid on the first drop  :smt013 , then I put on the BH and on the 2nd drop I got a Lingcod 8.7lbs. Held the lead for a while till the crew came in(Craig, Allen and Adam). The rest of the day it was slow after that then the fan turned on and the drift was too fast to keep any of our lures that we were using down on the  bottom.  Cam back in and chilled then decided to stay the night and give it go again in the morning. Hanging with the fellas at night was a blast , prefect evening with no wind and a full sky of stars. Got up early and went out and found the conditions worse then saturday. Mixed swell and wind came up earlier so went in with only 1 nice China. Traffic coming home was a nightmare!  :smt009 With 37 closed it too almost 4 hours to get to Suisun. Oh well I was able to listen to the 49ers all the way and get a win finally!. Looking forward to seeing everyone again soon!

Wow! What a great event put on by Ruben! And the sponsors!!!! Dan at headwaters took the tourney prize to another level with a Panama Trip!! Way to innovate fellas!
The ocean conditions were excellent on tourney day and this set the mood for all who showed up, pure stoke for all!!!
I was able to pluck a vermillion and ling on tourney day. Got the vermillion on the B2Squid lure on the drop. Was thinking when is this 3oz gonna hit the bottom, never did :smt003 The name of the game was lingcod so was glad I was able to get a 27" on the BigHammer swimbait and Andy1976 jighead!
I asked Bluegill to let me weigh-in first just so I could be in the lead for a minute before he weighed in, lol!!
We had a blast out there!!!
Thanks again Ruben and Sponsors! A great concept for a fishing tourney and I will be back!

Congratulations Craig! Locals rule dude.

After weigh-ins a few of us went for a quik dive in the cove. First time diving with Rider, Napajustin, and bluegill. Wind was up but, the underwater viz was about 6-10 ft. I plucked 3 abalone quick cause I was tired :smt005. Bluegill got his limit. Rider got two abs and some urchins :smt004 Napajustin is a fish, gotta hookup soon buddy!! It was great to spend some time in the water with you guys!
Oh yeah, I plucked an abalone that had 2 pearls in it :smt007

Had a great time even though I, well you know, got sea sick.  First time for me involved in an event of this sort.

To redeem myself I went out yesterday for about 10 hours.  A Rock, Green Ling, and a Ling were taken and not sick once.

Thanks again Rubin for organizing such an awesome event.

This tournament has such a cool concept! Ruben is not only a skilled fisherman, but also knows how to organize a unique, awesome event. I also hear he's an actual chef! Thanks again to Ruben and his family(and all others involved) for all the hard work making this happen for us. After seeing PescaDono's picture of the cove Friday morning, which I felt really helped the turnout, I loaded up and got there around 6PM. Of course, ReelKnots has already claimed "my" :smt002 camping site, and was already cooking up some delicious grub. The handful of us early birds enjoyed some beers and what turned out to be a warm, pleasant evening. 20-30 knot winds were non-existent, it was nice. Crashed out at PescaDono's place, which was super nice of him to offer.

Had a great time fishing Saturday and Sunday, and caught lots. I also think I had just as much fun diving this year with Rider, Bloodbath, Bluegill, and DesertDiver. Kiet, DesertDiver and myself snagged some 10 inch abs on Sunday in 35 fow. For those who haven't done this tournament, you "simply" must next year. It's not to be missed.

Getting a job has been a huge blessing, except for the impact it has had on my fishing!  :smt044  After I ended up having to stay late at work I didnt get home until after 8pm with nothing packed we gave up on the idea of making it up there Friday night.  But we packed the truck and headed out as early as possible and arrived at the camp at around 9:30.  After saying hello to everyone that was landing I suited up and headed out  :smt003  Only to find that I couldn't force myself to make it anywhere north around the point without being in some pretty crappy conditions.  I made the best of it trying to work the kelp line, then eventually fishing inside the cove as the fan turned on soon thereafter.  I did enjoy a nice beer and some paddiling around the cove for the heck of it.  I didn't catch a fish, but I had fun on the water with some great guys, and enjoyed a fine evening with some of awesome pals.  Sara had fun too  :smt004  And Bacon!  :smt044

This was some real fun for me. Bird couldn't come down. Missed you bud!!!!! Erik Sowa/Abdiver came down Friday night and we assembled the trailer with boats and filled the truck with gear for a 3:45 take off Saturday morning. We passed Timber at 5:15 to use the head at Stillwater. Then doubled back to Timber. Looked good. Unloaded and then wheeled down, chatting with others and totally stoked that it was on. Leepins showed up  and I let Patrick use a T-13 then we were off. As we rounded the corner you could tell that there were some larger sets coming through but totally fishable. Once in awhile a swell in the 8+ range would lip and that was exciting. As we were paddling north we saw a yellow boat starting to angle out and towards us. Erik thought it might be Kiel. Nope. This dude was hauling ass and then I understood why. It was Napa Justin on his awesome Scupper Pro. Fastest plastic boat out there. He asked if he could join us and we cheerily replied, "get the fuck outta here." Just kidding. The three of us set up off Stillwater. I started fishing the iron first because I wanted to save the swimbait for the closer to the top of the tide. The iron was getting hit right from the git-go. I caught what felt like a decent ling and when it got to the top I was kind of disappointed. It was what I thought was around 10 pounds. Maybe 30-31 inches. I clipped it because ya never know. We stayed pretty much around that area and went almost as far as the cauldron, which is just north of Stillwater Cove. Never getting anything larger than the ling I had clipped. A lot of fish were caught just nothing monster. We slowly made our way back south. Stopping every so often to try but the wind had picked up to 15+ so the baits were pretty scoped out. I kept on getting more small lings though. Almost down to the totem pole I thought I saw Scott/GB2 on his Eddy. Turned to spy out Erik, turned back and no one at home on the Eddy. Paddling over just in time to watch Scott climb back aboard. I waited for a few minutes to make sure he was good to go. Then I fished just a bit more before calling it and paddled in.

I love this tournament! It really is how this whole thing started. At least for me it is. No electronics. A paddle and a boat. Minimal gear. Looking for clues as to the shape of reefs according the land mass and points. Feeling the bottom for hard structure. Top notch fun.

When we landed I went up to Ruben and asked him if he could weigh this punk lingcod for me. He did and I was shocked that it ended up as the biggest ling in the tourney at 9lbs. 9ozs. I was like " are you fucking kidding me?" Kind of shocked actually.

The potluck and saying hi to everyone was pretty fun. I actually got to just chill,  burn some beef ass and relax. Thanks again Ruben for all you did and continue to do for the kayak angler. Special shout to Headwaters Kayak( Dan Arbuckle), Paddle Panama and Stealth for putting this prize together. The best prize I have ever seen for a kayak fishing tourney. We are stoked. Linelle is really excited too!!!!

See you all at Anchor!!!!!!

Alright, now that I've had a minute to catch my breath I want to say thanks again to all of you for making this such a fun event and exciting.

Before I give you the results I really want to recognize Dan from Headwaters Kayak Shop, Hennie from Paddle Panama and Brett from Stealth Performance Products for putting together the most amazing prize ever. As well, I want to thanks the lure manufacturers, B2 Squid, Deadly Duo Jigs (Andy1976), Big Hammer Swimbaits without them this tourney could not happen.

And thanks also to the other sponsors, Bending Branches, Wheeleez beach carts, Liquid Image Co., Pacific Sportsman, Ego S2 who helped us raise $520.00 to send to Heroes On The Water.

Ok, here we go, the top ten weights were:

1. Craig Davis 9lb 9oz

I'm extremely interested in watching this video, but I'm getting this message.

Ok it should be fixed now.

Ruben,

A big thanks to you and Jennifer for putting on a great event.  The whole Kahuna clan had a great time.  Well, maybe not Kahuna Chris, the 12 year old newbie who turned green on the water both Saturday and Sunday!  :smt078

Thanks,

Lloyd

Was not planning on coming to this one, was supposed to be at Cambria and was even registered, but was needed till late on Friday with another volunteer gig so change of plans,,, Drive from Angwin Friday morning to SF Airport to drop off clients, drive to Berkeley to grab a yak and few other minimal things as no time to waste to get up the North 101 on Friday afternoon…  yup, San Rafael at 4:15… certain doom traffic wise and after a long week and all ready traversed the Bay a couple times, no need for stop and go traffic… Lucas Valley….  awesome …

take it to Point Ryes Station, hit the grocery market for a sandwich, supplies and take the coast… what a Brilliant idea,,,  open roads, sunset drive..  epic…

get there and wonder where everyone is and am I in the right spot…?  Nuff Said…  Friggen Awesome,,,  Had such great time, I could not leave..

Bluegill and I finally closed the place last night and policed the grounds to spec and span to which Brenda was very happy…   :smt061

Super Strong Work Ruben and Family,

Awesome event and had a Great Time….

Over $500 bucks raised for Nor Cal HOW,  I think that is still in the matching funds quarter so Strong Work once again...

Funny was going out Sunday….  Raydon is on me like a cheap suit to get out on the water, but I'm in no hurry… finally get out there and realize I don;t have my box of jigs… all I have is the ANDY knife jig with one hook that is bent out, Raydon gives me a simuliar bent hook jig and a small black..

bend andy's hook back, put the black on…  one jig, one pole, ya get the idea.. 33" ling, a day late….

Great Win Craig and have fun in panama…

  Isn't Raydon Photogenic?

Holy shit Danglin the fishing cleaning station was a nightmire of a mess to pickup. Good job buddy and thanks for finding my spear tip, it came off twice in the water .  In my opinion those were your fineness moment at T.C you must do your best work when no one is around.  I've seen this guy slept from 3:00 pm till 10:00 am the next day. He's like sleeping beauty but no beauty just sleeping .  :smt003  Thank Ruben for the hard work putting this event together . I had a great time with everyone and will be back next year .

Ruben hit a home run with the way this tournament is set up! The playing field couldn't be more even for doofuses like me that are new to kayak fishing, and having three lures makes you be very strategic and cautious about how aggressively you fish. I lost my swimbait and knife jig before 9 AM and had to be really conservative with my B2 squid. It was frustrating but FUN! What I really enjoyed about this one was how intimate it was. Luckily the weather reports weeded out the weak and we ended up with a very intimate group :smt044 We fished, partied and ate with a great group of people. It was really a special experience and much thanks to Fishkraft and the sponsors for all they did! It was by far my favorite tournament thus far! Congrats to Ravensblack on the big win and a badass trip to Central America! No way in hell I miss this event next year :smt006

Sorry I missed this one. Next year for sure. It looked like a great time to be on the water. Great looking fish. And a great time fishing with friends.
