How feasible is it to dive with out weights? I am thinking about maybe jumping in tommorrow but I don't have any weights. Be nice to bring home some rockies. ( maybe wishful thinking for a newbe? )

VERY difficult with a thick suit.  Not advisable.   :smt009

Maybe you could rig something up?  i.e. bicycle innertube filled with weights, joined by a quick-release plastic snap?

man that would be hard to do more than once. i only do this when my frickin weight belt falls of my kayak. do a perfect jacknife and kick once your fins have gone below the surface... man my bottom time would be 3 seconds max.

lotof work but thats what you do when you accidentally drop a belt.

Dude Joel, a had a cousin that went swimming with brick shoes a few years back.  :smt011

When can I pick up the brick? It'll be helpfull :smt005

I wonder how joel's kayak would paddle with a brick tied to the bow line   :smt002

I'll leave the diving gear at home this trip.
Thanks for the heads up.

If you stay in really shallow water you can have fun chasing some fish around.  I did this once off the point at mackerricker SP, there's a boulderfield and most of it is 8' or less.  There weren't any abalone but there were plenty of fish.  I did have a weight belt, but didn't really need it that shallow - even with the polespear.

You can rent a weight belt for about $5.  Most rental places have them because folks generally don't fly with lead.

My weight belt fell off once while I was on my float tube. It was about 15' down, resting on a pinnacle. I kicked my ASS off and couldn't get to it. I had to kick so hard I ran out of air before I could make it. Fortunately a friend was able to get it and I could meet him about 1/2 way down.
I few rocks inside the top of the wetsuit will help a little. Anything to offset the buoyancy of the wetsuit.
When the kelp comes in, you can try grabbing onto a stalk of it and pulling yourself down. Use the stuff on the bottom to keep you down too.
Good luck.

if you are diving with a buddy , one trick to getting a belt off the bottom which i learned in mexico was to have a buddy dive down assuming they have their belt, clip your floatline to it and you can lay up top and pull it to the surface. sure beats diving down and retrieving one for a friend. i learned that quick at stillwater carmel one day. it was like 50 feet down, i grabbed the belt, that coupled with the compression of the wetsuit and loss of bouyancy really made it a huffing and puffing experience. if i had half a brain cell i would have done the floatline thing and have him pull it up.

wow, i just got lightheaded thinking about it.

i need a nap.
