Yeehaw!!! :smt007 Let the games begin...
Bill, does this mean SCUBA from a kayak is OK? Or just free dive.

Mooch, you can't spear the fish after you reel it up to your kayak. Has to be done under water.  :cowboy_smoke:

Are there different categories for Scuba and Freedive?

I'm not trying to be a feedive snob, I don't like that 'tude. But scuba gives a huge advantage to a spearo; especially for deep-water species like vermillions. This may work against me 'cause I might not be able to freedive too much in the future, the way things are going with my ears. But having done both, I'd rather lose freediving than win on scuba. We might as well say power boats are OK for the fishing pool (are they? :smt002).

I agree with Rich...scuba divers have it easy. We should keep the derby for free diving only.

I'd prefer it simply be 'heaviest gamefish', gamefish being one of the above.  Probably a ling or halibut being the winner.  maybe a WSB is one gets caught up here.  That'll make it just $5 to enter.

$30 is alot to lay out next to the 30 for the rod/reel competition.  You can't just be lucky or good at one thing this time either.

I'm sort of in favor of heaviest fish; however that might cause me to want to shoot a big ling, which I generally try not to do; just personal preference in eating. I will probably enter all classes though; just to support the cause. And I won't hesitate to nail a 10 pound early season ling!

I agree with the no-scuba rule.

Just like we use kayaks instead of powered boats... we should dive on our own breath, not using scuba tanks to "cheat"   :smt009

Agreed - SCUBA spearfishing is not the same as freediving...It's illegal in most countries and should be here, but that's another issue...

Another question - what about diving from shore? I know that this is a kayak site promoting the sport of kayak-fishing, but I usually don't dive from my kayak, but what's the difference? The taking of the fish happens underwater, regardles of whether you have a kayak or not...In fact, I would say diving from shore is more challenging.
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...
