Title: Clean your crab carefully
Post by: rroland on December 03, 2017, 01:24:38 PM
Don't do what I did yesterday.  Step one remove the apron or the belly flap on the male..not with your thumb!
Now I have a piece deep under my thumbnail..can't get it out have to go to the Dr tomorrow...use a butter knife or a flat head screwdriver

The only crabbing I've done was for dungies in Alaska. We always grabbed the legs and claws, then broke them in half over our knee or the dock. Threw everything that wasn't the legs and claws into the harbor. Not sure what everyone else does.

....we eat the sweet sweet meet in the body cavities.  Better than the claw and leg meat imo.

I've had hardwood slivers under the fingernail before.  Have to soften the skin and nail by soaking in hot water, then separating the skin and nail until you can get a bite on the sliver with a set of good tweezers.  Brutal but its better than waiting a day and having the doctor do essentially the same thing once its healed a bit.

Back them live and use your thumb to remove the tail from the back or broadside of the tail.  You avoid the sharp points that way.  Alternately, use a leg spike as a pick to lift the tail and grip the tip between your thumb and forefinger.

Vinegar dissolves urchin spines.

Use a wooden mallet and smash them to smithereens. No, wait, that only applies to Maryland blue crabs...

Pee on it for a couple days then cut it out. Same as an urchin spine

I was looking at the various ways of cleaning live crabs and ran across this guys video.  Ridiculously quick and easy.  We just do this same thing using the front corner of the yak as soon as we get back to the beach and throw em on ice.

I've had the butter before and liked it, but I can live without it.  I'm usually driving back to Reno after, so that's easiest for me to clean and put on ice.   :smt001

I recently had a piece of shell stuck deep, under my fingernail.  It took a few days and was pain in the ass to get out.

While it, the liver and blood, are tasty they are also where all the really unhealthy toxins accumulate.  Think mercury, PCB's, other heavy metals, and the really bad stuff from the breaking down plastics that are in the different Gyres.  The liver is the body's filter.  Sorry.

Meh. I like it too much to not eat it, and waste it by cleaning it before cooking...

Each to his own I guess.

You should be less concerned about toxins and more concerned about consuming some citrus   :smt003

I don't think I've ever seen anyone clean a blue crab before cooking back home in New Orleans...

Yes, blue crabs are smaller, but I would think the butter/guts/viscera issue would be the same in regards to the things you describe above...

Sincerely,

Jim

So far, that's hearsay, but from the likes of my doctor and other sources, so I'll see what I can troll up on the topic.

The state puts up all sorts of restrictions on eating fish and shellfish, yet only posts warnings for dungeness crab during domoic acid events.  When domoic acid is not present, are there any posted restrictions?
