Just out of curiosity, what the heck are you building, that you need an anvil that size? We had a 50 and 85# that handled everything on the ranch and the quarries. I understand that overkill is underrated, but damn son!

I'm no expert, just going on the recommendations I got in the classes I've been taking.  Farriers anvils tend to be lighter, with more mass in the horn, and in the 50-150 pound range.  Forging anvils tend to have more mass in the body and typically range from 75-500 pounds.  Could I make a farriers anvil work?  Well, with my rookie skills, probably, but if I'm going to spend 100's of dollars on the equipment (anvils, forge, tools), I'm going to try to get the right equipment.  I could probably make a smaller forging anvil work, or a farriers anvil that has more body mass, for the right price.

What am I building?  I dunno.  I'm pounding hot metal!!!  I'm planning on taking a bladesmithing class next.  That's one direction this is likely to take.

So I came across a good deal today on a smaller anvil.  It's an Isaac Hill anvil made in Birmingham, England circa 1830-1850.  It only weighs 98 pounds, so it's much smaller than I was hoping for.  But it was only $100, and I'm sure I can make my money back on this should I chose to sell.  I'll start out with it, while keeping an eye open for a deal on a larger unit.

Time to build a forge.

He is married, he aint gonna get permission to buy it. Me, on the other hand, am more than willing to give myself permission to buy this thing. With that being said, I, should be first on the list should your wife tell you to get rid of the damn thing.  :smt003
